Nuclear fusion technologies have re-gained momentum in the last decade thanks to their disruptive potential in different fields, such as energy production and space propulsion, and to new technological developments, especially high temperature superconductor tapes, which allow overcoming previous performance or design limits. To date, reviews of recent nuclear fusion designs are lacking. Therefore, this paper aims at giving a comprehensive overview of nuclear fusion concepts for industrial applications with a focus on the private sector. The designs are classified according to the three leading concepts for plasma confinement, namely, magnetic confinement, inertial confinement and magneto-inertial confinement. The working principles of the main devices are described in detail to highlight strengths and weaknesses of the different designs. The importance of the public sector on private projects is discussed. The technological maturity is estimated, and the main criticalities for each project are identified. Finally, the geographical distribution of the companies (or public institutions) pursuing the design of fusion devices for commercial applications is reported.

Progress in the development of fusion energy has gained momentum in recent years. However, questions remain across key subject areas that will affect the path to commercial fusion energy. The purpose of this review is to expose socio-economic areas that need further research, and from this assist in making recommendations to the fusion community, (and policy makers and regulators) in order to redirect and orient fusion for commercialisation: When commercialised, what form does it take? Where does it fit into a future energy system? Compared to other technologies, how much will fusion cost? Why do it? When is it likely that fusion reaches commercialisation? Investigations that have sought to answer these questions carry looming uncertainty, mainly stemming from the techno-economics of emerging fusion technology in the private sector, and due to the potential for applications outside of electricity generation coming into consideration. Such topics covered include hydrogen, desalination, and process-heat applications.

The commercialisation of fusion for the energy market: a review of socio-economic studies

The advanced beam-driven FRC is a Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) with the addition of neutral beam (NB) injection, electrode biasing, and magnetic expander divertors. The resulting configuration has novel features that make it necessary to revisit many key results in FRC theory. Three of these features include (i) a large energetic ion population, (ii) in-principle capability to adjust the electric field and rotation profiles, and (iii) a combination of magnetic and electrostatic confinement of electrons in the SOL. In some fueling scenarios the electron density profile may exhibit a significant peak outside of the separatrix. To explore these features a hybrid fluid/kinetic equilibrium model has been used to reconstruct typical experimental profiles of the C-2W experiment. Results indicate that the energetic ions provide at least 50% of the total plasma pressure. These equilibrium profiles have been used as initial conditions for global, cross-separatrix, turbulent transport simulations using the 3D electrostatic particle-in-cell code ANC. Electrostatic fluctuations were found to nonlinearly saturate at an amplitude which is an order magnitude lower than that observed previously. The tokamak turbulence code GTC code has also been extended to handle FRC physics in the new GTC-X version, which has been used to perform simulations of turbulent transport in the SOL relevant to electrode biasing. It is found that equilibrium × flow shear significantly decreases ion temperature gradient saturation amplitude and ion heat transport. Also in the SOL, a 1D2V continuum code has been developed and applied to parallel electron heat transport. Results show the formation of pre-sheath potential and reduction of parallel electron heat loss close to the ideal ambipolar limit, a result which has been validated by experimental diagnostics. These transport modifications caused by the three novel configuration features help to explain the remarkable plasma performance of the C-2W experiment.

Simulation of equilibrium and transport in advanced FRCs

The paper describes the conceptual design of a small-scale experiment within the fusion neutron source project ALIANCE (Axisymmetric LInear Advanced Neutron sourCE). The experimental machine is an axially symmetric magnetic plasma trap with a high mirror ratio, which focuses on the physical and engineering problems of mirror-based gasdynamic neutron sources. The specific research topics covered include the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability of plasmas with high mirror ratios, the operation of the electrodes used for plasma stabilization, and problems related to particle and energy transport. ALIANCE-T features superconducting mirror solenoids that enable it to reach mirror ratios of ∼100 and a helicon plasma source with a power of up to 25 kW installed directly in the confinement zone between the mirrors. The expected plasma parameters are estimated using a simple analytical model, which takes into account gasdynamic axial plasma losses, cross-field transport, and the interaction of the plasma with neutral gas. It is projected that the machine will simultaneously achieve a plasma density >1013 cm−3 and a temperature >10 eV in a continuous discharge lasting for 1–8 h. This paper gives a detailed description of the key machine subsystems and introduces the analytical model used for calculation of the plasma parameters.
