The aim of this study was to determine how sodium intake can affect frailty, but not anorexia, in community-dwelling older adults in Korea. This was a cross-sectional study. The study used data from the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Survey (KFACS), a multi-center longitudinal study addressing 10 centers across urban, rural, and suburban communities in Korea, between 2016 and 2017. A total of 954 older adults who underwent both 24-hour dietary recall assessment and physical function test during the first-year baseline investigation of the KFACS. Frailty was determined according to the Fried frailty index (FFI). Of the 954 participants, 461 (48.3%) were male and the mean age was 76.3 years old. The average daily sodium intake was 3857 mg. The frailty prevalence in first to third quartiles was 21.8%, 7.5%, and 5.4%, respectively, and increased in the fourth quartile of sodium intake to 8.9%. Using the second quartile of sodium intake (2504–3575 mg) as reference, the odds ratios of frailty were 1.64 (95% confidence interval: 0.84–3.22), 1.33 (0.57–3.06), and 4.00 (1.72–9.27) for the first (<2504 mg), third (3575–4873 mg), and fourth (≥4873 mg) quartiles, respectively, in a multivariate-adjusted analysis. Low sodium intake (<2504 mg) is related to frailty in older people, but it seems to be a less important factor than other nutritional factors. The prevalence of frailty did not increase up to a daily sodium intake of 3575 mg, but it increased upon a daily sodium intake higher than 3575 mg.

How Much Intake of Sodium Is Good for Frailty? : The Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS)

In this study, the researchers investigated the factors influencing regional disparities in the practice of healthy living for the elderly in Busan and Gyeongnam. A cross-sectional study was utilized to integrate raw data from the Korea Community Health Survey (KCHS) in 2015, 2017, and 2019. The KCHS included respondents from the Busan Metropolitan and Gyeongnam regions. Based on the socioecological model, healthy living practices were selected as the dependent variable, and other factors, such as personal, interpersonal, and community factors, were selected as independent variables. Bivariate chi-square test, independent t-test, and logistic regression analyses were performed using SPSS/WIN version 26.0. According to the results, community factors were significant predictors of healthy living practices in Busan, while interpersonal factors were the predictors in the Gyeongnam region. Moreover, personal factors impacted healthy living practices but differed significantly between regions. In particular, the living environment and unmet healthcare needs were significant predictors for Busan and Gyeongnam regions, respectively, indicating the need to improve the environment and physical access to healthcare resources in the urban community. Through the results of our study, we highlight the need to implement policies and strategies tailored to personal and environmental factors to improve healthy living practices in older adults.

Factors Influencing the Practice of Healthy Living as an Integrated Indicator of the Elderly’s Drinking, Smoking, and Walking Patterns: Using Korea Community Health Surveys

Aim. To study the survival and sequestration of transfused donor platelets labeled with 51Cr in patients with acute leukemia (AL).
Subjects and methods. Seven donor volunteers and 39 patients with different forms with AL at various stages of polychemotherapy (PCT) were examined. Cytostatic therapy was accompanied by 51Cr-labeled platelet concentrate (PC) transfusions. The patients were on appropriate high-dose (HD) PCT.
Results. The duration of donor platelet circulation was 8-10 days in healthy individuals. No platelet hypersequestration was recorded in both the spleen and the liver. Donor platelet survival was shorter in all patients with in a state of cytostatic cytopenia. There was an inverse correlation between the degree of circulation shortening and some clinical and hematological parameters (the bone marrow level of blastemia and blastosis, the XIIa-dependent fibrinolysis parameters). Four variants of radioactivity trends above the spleen and liver were identified. The findings suggest that there is platelet hypersequestration in the spleen, liver, and both organs. In some patients, the above both organs are uninvolved in the hypersequestration processes and the possible mechanism for increased consumption of transfused donor platelets, which is associated with recovery of the HD PCT-damaged vascular endothelium is considered.
Conclusion. Shortening of transfused donor platelet circulation was found in relation to the level of blastosis. The described procedure may be used as one of the additional methods for evaluating the efficacy of donor PC transfusion and for specifying the pathogenesis of thrombocytopenias in AL patients on programmed HD PCT. A procedure is proposed to time the circulation of 51Cr-labeled platelets, by assessing deposit phenomena and estimating the level of their sequestration in the spleen and liver for the prediction of the efficiency of TC transfusions.

Objectives: Colonoscopy is a popular tool for screening for colon cancer throughout the world. The incidence of polypectomy and follow-up colonoscopy are persistently increasing but the studies about follow-up test after polypectomy are still lack of its domestic sources. This study is designed to look into the recurrence rate of colon polyps and risk factors after polypectomy. Methods: This is a retrospective study by reviewing medical charts of 147 patients who underwent polypectomy and follow-up colonoscopy from Jan. 2000 to Mar. 2008. The Kudo classification was used to describe the polyps found in the colonoscopy. The follow-up period was defined as the term between polypectomy and the first colonoscopy follow up. Results: Seventy six point two percent of the enrolled patient were male and the mean age was 56.5 ± 8.1. Mean follow-up period was 24.9 ± 13.7 (6 - 65) months. The cumulative recurrence rate of 1 year was 11.6%. The rate of 2 years was 36.7% and that of 3 years was 55.8%. The number of polyps was the factor which statistically showed significant relation of its recurrence rate. The histological morphology characteristic of polyps could be one independent factor which may be associated to the recurrence of polyps. Conclusions: The importance of colonoscopy follow up after polypectomy was clearly emphasized through the cumulative recurrence rate of 55.8%. Therefore, there is a need for more domestic studies with a large number of patients about the recurrence of polyps after polypectomy.
