Light-Emitting Self-Assembled Materials Based on d(8) and d(10) Transition Metal Complexes.

The modification of surfaces by the deposition of a robust overlayer provides an excellent handle with which to tune the properties of a bulk substrate to those of interest. Such control over the surface properties becomes increasingly important with the continuing efforts at down-sizing the active components in optoelectronic devices, and the corresponding increase in the surface area/volume ratio. Relevant properties to tune include the degree to which a surface is wetted by water or oil. Analogously, for biosensing applications there is an increasing interest in so-called “romantic surfaces”: surfaces that repel all biological entities, apart from one, to which it binds strongly. Such systems require both long lasting and highly specific tuning of the surface properties. This Review presents one approach to obtain robust surface modifications of the surface of oxides, namely the covalent attachment of monolayers.

Five functional silanes—3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS), N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (AEAPTES), N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AEAPTMS), and N-(6-aminohexyl)aminomethyltriethoxysilane (AHAMTES)—were assessed for the preparation of hydrolytically stable amine-functionalized silica substrates. These can be categorized into three groups (G1, G2, and G3) based on the intramolecular coordinating ability of the amine functionality to the silicon center. Silanizations were carried out in anhydrous toluene as well as in the vapor phase at elevated temperatures. Aminosilane-derived layers prepared in solution are multilayers in nature, and those produced in the vapor phase have monolayer characteristics. Positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) is a novel method that provides molecular-level information about complex macromolecular structure in a manner different from, but complementary to, conventional physical and chemical methodology. This paper presents a perspective of PAS in polymeric systems covering 12 aspects: historical, spacial, spherical quantum model, anisotropic structure, voids, positronium chemistry, time, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and data analysis, variable monoenergetic slow positron beam techniques and depth profiling, elemental analysis, multidimensional instrumentation advances in PAS, and free volume and free-volume theories.

Silicon nanowire field-effect-transistor based biosensors: from sensitive to ultra-sensitive.

Covalently bonded monolayers of two monofunctional aminosilanes (3-aminopropyldimethylethoxysilane, APDMES, and 3-aminopropyldiisopropylethoxysilane, APDIPES) and one trifunctional aminosilane (3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, APTES) have been deposited on dehydrated silicon substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at 150 °C and low pressure (a few Torr) using reproducible equipment. Standard surface analytical techniques such as x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle goniometry, spectroscopic ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) have been employed to characterize the resulting films. These methods indicate that essentially constant surface coverages are obtained over a wide range of gas phase concentrations of the aminosilanes. Chemical vapor deposition of three aminosilanes on silicon dioxide: surface characterization, stability, effects of silane concentration, and cyanine dye adsorption.

We report the XPS characterization of a thin film of Al2O3 (35 nm) deposited via e-beam evaporation onto silicon (100). The film was characterized with monochromatic Al Kα radiation. An XPS survey scan, an Al 2p narrow scan, an O 1s narrow scan, and the valence band spectrum were collected. The Al2O3 thin film is used as a diffusion barrier layer for templated carbon nanotube (CNT) growth in the preparation of microfabricated thin layer chromatography plates.

In this paper, a systematic study is provided of the chemical environment inside free volume holes in a series of halogenated polystyrenes (p-position), −[CH2CH C6H5X]n– (X = F, Cl, Br, I), by using positron annihilation spectroscopy. In such polymers it was determined that the chemical environment is the major effect on Doppler broadening of two 511 keV γ photons from positron–electron annihilation. Doppler broadening energy spectroscopy (DBES) and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) were combined in a novel approach to study the chemical environment in a polymer system. A highly linear relationship between Doppler broadenings caused by electron kinetic energies of valence electrons and the ionization potentials of halogen elements was obtained, as well as a similar correlation with the results from ab initio molecular orbital (MO) calculations for monohalogenobenzenes, C6H5X (X = F, Cl, Br, I).
