Earthquakes, as natural phenomena, have consistently caused damage and loss of human life throughout history. Earthquake prediction is an essential aspect of any society's plans and can increase public preparedness and reduce damage to a great extent. Despite advances in computing systems and deep learning methods, no substantial achievements have been made in earthquake prediction. One of the most important reasons is that the earthquake's nonlinear and chaotic behavior makes it hard to train the deep learning method. To tackle this drawback, this study tries to take an effective step in improving the performance of prediction results by employing a novel method in earthquake prediction. This method employs a deep learning model based on convolutional neural networks (CNN), bi-directional long short-term memory (BiLSTM), and an attention mechanism, as well as a zero-order hold (ZOH) pre-processing methodology. This study aims to predict the maximum magnitude and number of earthquakes in the next month with the least error. The proposed method was evaluated by an earthquake dataset from nine distinct regions of China. The results reveal that the proposed method outperforms other prediction methods in terms of performance and generalization.

Short-term load forecasting based on CNN-BiLSTM with Bayesian optimization and attention mechanism

Accurate short-term load forecasting can ensure the safe and stable operation of power grids, but the nonlinear load increases the complexity of forecasting. In order to solve the problem of modal aliasing in historical data, and fully explore the relationship between time series characteristics in load data, this paper proposes a gated cyclic network model (SSA–GRU) based on sparrow algorithm optimization. Firstly, the complementary sets and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) are used to decompose the original data to obtain the characteristic components. The SSA–GRU combined model is used to predict the characteristic components, and finally obtain the prediction results, and complete the short-term load forecasting. Taking the real data of a company as an example, this paper compares the combined model CEEMD–SSA–GRU with EMD–SSA–GRU, SSA–GRU, and GRU models. Experimental results show that this model has better prediction effect than other models.

Research on Short-Term Load Forecasting Based on Optimized GRU Neural Network

Short-term load forecasting plays a significant role in the operation of power systems. Recently, deep learning has been generally employed in short-term load forecasting, primarily in the extraction of the characteristics of digital information in a single dimension without taking into account of the impact of external variables, particularly non-digital elements on load characteristics. In this paper, we propose a joint MFF-SAM-GCN to realize short-term load forecasting. First, we utilize a Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) network and One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN) in parallel connection to form a multi-feature fusion (MFF) framework, which can extract spatiotemporal correlation features of the load data. In addition, we introduce a Self-Attention Mechanism (SAM) to further enhance the feature extraction capability of the 1D-CNN network. Then with the deployment of a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN), the external non-digital features such as weather, strength, and direction of wind, etc., are extracted. Moreover, the generated weight matrices are incorporated into the load features to enhance feature recognition ability. Finally, we exploit Bayesian Optimization (BO) to find the optimal hyperparameters of the model to further improve the prediction accuracy. The simulation is taken from our proposed model and six benchmark schemes by using the bus load dataset of the Shandong Open Data Network, China. The results show that the RMSE of our proposed MFF-SAM-GCN model is 0.0284, while the SMAPE is 9.453%,the MBE is 0.025, and R-squared is 0.989, which is better than the selected three traditional machine learning methods and the three deep learning models.

Forecasting of Short-Term Load Using the MFF-SAM-GCN Model

Short-term power load forecasting is quite vital in maintaining the balance between power production and power consumption of the power grid. Prediction accuracy not only affects the power grid construction, but also influences the economic development of the power grid. This paper proposes a short-term load forecasting based on Convolutional Neural Networks and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (CNN-BiLSTM) with Bayesian Optimization (BO) and Attention Mechanism (AM). The BiLSTM is good at time series forecasting, and the Attention Mechanism can help the model to focus on the important part of the BiLSTM output. In order to make the forecasting performance of the model as good as possible, the Bayesian Optimization is used to tune the hyperparameters of the model. The input of the model is history load, time slot, and meteorological factors. In order to eliminate the seasonal influence, the data set is divided into four subsets with respect to four seasons. The performance of the proposed model is compared with other forecasting models by MAE, RMSE, MAPE, and \(R^2\) score. The experiment results show that the proposed model fits the actual values best and has the best forecasting performance among the contrast models.
