Underground mining can cause ground and strata movements, which in turn cause damage to houses and the landscape. The different characteristics and properties of the strata encountered during mining can also result in corresponding deformation. In order to study the deformation and damage rules of strata which are composed of unconsolidated soil and bedrock induced by underground coal mining, a physical model that employs material sand, lime, and gypsum with water was utilized firstly to simulate strata and ground movements. Then overlying strata with different properties were created according to the corresponding ratio of the mixed material, physical models under two conditions (i.e., thick soil layer and thin bedrock, and thin soil layer and thick bedrock) were set up. Lastly underground coal extraction was conducted using the proposed models. Results show that the proportion of unconsolidated soil layer in the overlying strata is the key factor that determines the significant differences in the movement of strata under the two special conditions. When the ratio of the soil layer is large, the unconsolidated soil layer is loaded on the bedrock; the bedrock is thus forced to move down, and the compression rate of the broken strata is increased. The soil layer follows the bedrock as an integral movement to subsidence. When the ratio of the soil layer is small, the load on the strata is small, but the structural function of the strata is obvious and the fraction degree in the strata is developed. The obtained results in this study can be applied to support mine planning in the aspect of ground damage evaluation.

Physical Experiments on the Deformation of Strata with Different Properties Induced by Underground Mining

The second-order nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) in non-centrosymmetric materials has recently drawn intense interest, since its inherent rectification could enable various device applications such as energy harvesting and wireless charging. However, previously reported NLHE systems normally suffer from relatively small Hall voltage outputs and/or low working temperatures. In this study, we report the observation of a pronounced NLHE in tellurium (Te) thin flakes at room temperature. Benefiting from the semiconductor nature of Te, the obtained nonlinear response can be readily enhanced through electrostatic gating, leading to a second-harmonic output at 300 K up to 2.8 mV. By utilizing such a giant NLHE, we further demonstrate the potential of Te as a wireless Hall rectifier within the radiofrequency range, which is manifested by the remarkable and tunable rectification effect also at room temperature. Extrinsic scattering is then revealed to be the dominant mechanism for the NLHE in Te, with symmetry breaking on the surface playing a key role. As a simple elemental semiconductor, Te provides an appealing platform to advance our understanding of nonlinear transport in solids and to develop NLHE-based electronic devices. 

Giant nonlinear Hall and wireless rectification effects at room temperature in the elemental semiconductor tellurium

The advent of 2D materials has ushered in the exploration of their synthesis, characterization and application. While plenty of 2D materials have been synthesized on various metallic substrates, interfacial interaction significantly affects their intrinsic electronic properties. Additionally, the complex transfer process presents further challenges. In this context, experimental efforts are devoted to the direct growth on technologically important semiconductor/insulator substrates. This review aims to uncover the effects of substrate on the growth of 2D materials. The focus is on non-metallic substrate used for epitaxial growth and how this highlights the necessity for phase engineering and advanced characterization at atomic scale. Special attention is paid to monoelemental 2D structures with topological properties. The conclusion is drawn through a discussion of the requirements for integrating 2D materials with current semiconductor-based technology and the unique properties of heterostructures based on 2D materials. Overall, this review describes how 2D materials can be fabricated directly on non-metallic substrates and the exploration of growth mechanism at atomic scale.

Growth of Single Crystalline 2D Materials beyond Graphene on Non-metallic Substrates.

Abstract Semiconductor transistors operate by modulating the charge carrier concentration of a channel material through an electric field coupled by a capacitor. This mechanism is constrained by the fundamental transport physics and material properties of such devices—attenuation of the electric field, and limited mobility and charge carrier density in semiconductor channels. In this work, we demonstrate a new type of transistor that operates through a different mechanism. The channel material is a Weyl semimetal, NbP, whose resistivity is modulated via a magnetic field generated by an integrated superconductor. Due to the exceptionally large electron mobility of this material, which reaches over 1,000,000 cm 2 /Vs, and the strong magnetoresistive coupling, the transistor can generate significant transconductance amplification at nanowatt levels of power. This type of device can enable new low-power amplifiers, suitable for qubit readout operation in quantum computers. 

Magnetoresistive-coupled transistor using the Weyl semimetal NbP

To obtain cold atom samples with temperatures lower than 100 pK in the cold atom physics rack experiment of the Chinese Space Station, we propose to use the momentum filtering method for deep cooling of atoms. This paper introduces the experimental results of the momentum filtering method verified by our ground testing system. In the experiment, we designed a specific experimental sequence of standing-wave light pulses to control the temperature, atomic number, and size of the atomic cloud. The results show that the momentum filter can effectively and conveniently reduce the temperature of the atomic cloud and the energy of Bose–Einstein condensation, and can be flexibly combined with other cooling methods to enhance the cooling effect. This work provides a method for the atomic cooling scheme of the ultra-cold atomic system on the ground and on the space station, and shows a way of deep cooling atoms. 

Momentum filtering scheme of cooling atomic clouds for the Chinese Space Station

The emergent topological semimetals have received considerable attention for developing innovative devices, mainly due to their novel topological electronic properties with high robustness against external perturbations. Progress has been hindered, though, due to a lack of tunability. Here the authors address this challenge by constructing a field-effect device based on thin flakes of tellurium, a semiconductor with a chiral Weyl node. In this device, the conducting and topological states can be simultaneously switched electrostatically, yielding giant modulations of both channel conductivity and chiral-anomaly-induced magnetoresistance. 

Topological Field-Effect Transistor Based on Quasi-Two-Dimensional Tellurium Flakes

The Cold Atom Physics Rack (CAPR) of Chinese space station will be launched at the end of 2022. The important goal of CAPR is to achieve BEC at 100 pk. In order to obtain ultracold atoms in microgravity of space station, we propose a two-stage cooling scheme using all-optical trap with different waist beams. The cold atom cloud obtained by this scheme is composed of condensate and thermal atoms around condensate. The design of our two-stage cooling scheme will effectively reduce the temperature of the thermal atom cloud and the effective temperature generated by the interaction energy of the condensate. The atomic temperature of 5 nk is obtained from the ground test experiment, and the corresponding temperature under the microgravity condition of the space station is theoretically predicted to be less than 100 pk. Taking the advantages of ultracold temperature and long-time detection, many scientific experiments will be arranged. In this paper, the ground test experiments based on ground principle prototype and pre-prototype for CAPR are also introduced.

Deep cooling scheme of quantum degenerate gas and ground experimental verification for chinese space station

Fracture of the os peroneum is rare, and displacement of the fracture can be indicative of a tear in the peroneal longus tendon. A fifth metatarsal base fracture is a common injury caused by sudden inversion and plantar flexion of the hindfoot. We observed a rare case of a fifth metatarsal base zone I fracture combined with a displaced os peroneum fracture in a 34-year-old woman. The patient was treated with resection of the os peroneum and repair of the peroneal longus tendon, as well as open reduction and internal fixation of the fifth metatarsal base. After exposing the fragment of the fifth metatarsal base, the distal part of the fractured os peroneum was found to be located just under the fracture site. There were no complications or discomfort of the foot or ankle at 2 years postoperatively. Resection of the os peroneum and direct repair of the peroneal longus tendon were easily performed after the fifth metatarsal base fragment was exposed. This was an innovative method for performing peroneal longus tendon repair in the deep portion of the midfoot.

The ground movement laws due to wide strip mining under deep-lying seams has been studied with the experiment of similar material model, and the results of experiment could analysis qualitatively that it is feasible for wide strip mining under deep-lying seams. Taking 25 mining area of Hemei 9th mine as geologic background, the model of wide strip mining under deep seams has been made, which was used to study on the deformation of overburden and the ground movement laws. The results of experiment show that the properties and thickness of strata play a control role on the deformation, and the key strata play a core role; the deformation was dispersed with wide strip mining. When the width of strip mining and protective coal pillar are scientific and reasonable, the purpose of increasing the width of strip mining under the condition of controlling deformation could be achieved, and the entire mining area would be formed a flat subsidence basin. These achievements provide a scientific basis for solving the problem for the ground buildings protection in the conditions of wide strip mining under deep-lying seams, and that also provide some references for further studying on the method of wide strip mining under deep-lying seams.
