Transport properties of the Au 32 cluster with fullerene symmetry

Field emission from localized narrow bands above the Fermi level (${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{F}}$) are obtained in two nanometer-scale systems: gold nanoclusters deposited on W support tips and nanotips that are W nano-scale protrusions formed on W support tips. The shift of localized bands was used as a probe of the tunneling process. The emission above ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{F}}$ is explained by considering the role of the tail of the Fermi function in supplying electrons to these localized levels. Conservation of energy is consistent with this process. The emission of hot electrons opens the possibility of local cooling of nanostructures.

Field-ion microscopy ~FIM! is used to resolve the atomic structure and orientation of individual nanometersize Au clusters supported on sharp tips of W, Pt, and a Pt/Ir alloy. The FIM images from a single cluster illustrate that the technique is capable of providing atomically resolved images of supported nanometer-size clusters in an ultrahigh vacuum environment. By comparing computer simulations of a FIM image to experimental data, the atomic structure and orientation of the supported cluster can be determined. @S0163-1829~98!07528-6#

It was found that the addition of C60 and C70 fullerenes to Tb2(SO4)3·8H2O crystals led to a decrease in the photo- and triboluminescence intensities of the Tb3+ ion, without affecting the positions of its luminescence maxima. An increase in the intensity of the emission band ascribed to fullerene at 630–850 nm, relative to that without terbium sulphate, was also observed in the photoluminescence spectra. The phosphor luminescence was quenched in a mechanical mixture with the quenchers and luminescence sensitization of the quenchers occurred, indicating that quenching took place in the solid phase by a mechanism similar to that observed in solution; this is due to radiationless energy transfer from the excited Tb3+ ion to the C60 and C70 molecules. The excitation energy is probably transferred through the contacting crystal surfaces of the phosphor and quencher.

The electron emission properties of a single C[sub 60] molecule supported on a W field emission tip are reported. Using standard models, values for the size, effective work function, and desorption temperature of C[sub 60] were obtained. Energy distributions of electrons emitted from C[sub 60] exhibit a narrow two-peaked spectrum and indicate a splitting of the highest occupied molecular-orbital level.
