The invention relates to a method for carrying out Hoffman decoding on coded data on a transmission stream. The method comprises the following steps of: processing code words in a code book to generate at least one auxiliary comparison table, and storing each generated auxiliary comparison table in a storage device, wherein the code book is a predetermined code book or extracted from the transmission stream; and searching out a corresponding decoding value of a target code word in the coded data according to the code book and the at least one auxiliary comparison table which is stored in the storage device. Hoffman decoding is carried out by using the auxiliary comparison table, so a searching speed can be improved, and fewer memory spaces are required. Therefore, the Hoffman decoding method can be effectively used in most embedded systems.
