MXenes, a new family of two-dimensional materials, were prepared by a selective chemical etching method and the saturation absorption characteristics were measured using the Z-scan method. At 1.06 μm, a passively Q-switched Nd:YAG ceramic laser was operated by using MXene Ti3C2T x as a saturable absorber successfully for the first time. At an absorbed pump power of 4.14 W, the pulse repetition rate was 186 kHz and the minimum pulse width was 359 ns. The maximal peak power and single-pulse energy were 2.04 W and 0.66 μJ respectively. This study demonstrates that MXenes show promise as saturable absorbers in laser technology.

MXene Ti3C2T x absorber for a 1.06 μm passively Q-switched ceramic laser

We demonstrate a high-power laser system with a high-quality near-field beam by using a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM). An efficient spatial beam shaping algorithm is discussed which can improve the output nearfield beam quality effectively. Both small-signal and large-signal amplification situation of the laser are considered in the beam shaping algorithm. The experimental results show that the near field fluence modulation of output is improved from 1.99:1 to 1.26:1 by using the liquid-crystal SLM. Obvious uniform spatial fluence distribution and near-field beam quality improvement are observed.

We have demonstrated what we believe is the first continuous wave neodymium-doped potassium gadolinium tungstate crystal (Nd:KGW) laser with hot-band diode pumping at ∼910  nm. This pumping wavelength reduced the quantum defect by >46% as compared to conventional ∼810  nm pumping and resulted in significantly lower thermal lensing. The laser produced 2.9 W of average output power at 1067 nm in a diffraction-limited beam for an absorbed pump power of 8.3 W. The slope efficiency and optical-to-optical efficiency were found to be 43% and 35%, respectively. Significant reduction of quantum defect offered by this pumping wavelength and availability of suitable high-power laser diodes opens up an attractive way to further power and efficiency scaling of Nd:KGW lasers.

Beam shaping and compensation are reported for a high Nd:glass amplification system based on the liquid crystal spatial light modulation technique. As a typical application, a signal Gaussian beam of 1 nJ, with a pulse width of 3 ns, was amplified to 5 J with a flat-top intensity distribution. A spot modulation of 1.41 on the dimension of 50 mm × 50 mm was obtained. The minor beam distortion was further eliminated by applying a closed loop control. Most parameters including pulse energy, frequency, spot intensity distribution, etc., can be measured and calculated simultaneously via this proposed system. Moreover, the structure of image transfer was confirmed to be capable of maintaining high-quality image transmission in the amplification process.
