Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) object detection plays a crucial role in civil, commercial, and military domains. However, the high proportion of small objects in UAV images and the limited platform resources lead to the low accuracy of most of the existing detection models embedded in UAVs, and it is difficult to strike a good balance between detection performance and resource consumption. To alleviate the above problems, we optimize YOLOv8 and propose an object detection model based on UAV aerial photography scenarios, called UAV-YOLOv8. Firstly, Wise-IoU (WIoU) v3 is used as a bounding box regression loss, and a wise gradient allocation strategy makes the model focus more on common-quality samples, thus improving the localization ability of the model. Secondly, an attention mechanism called BiFormer is introduced to optimize the backbone network, which improves the model's attention to critical information. Finally, we design a feature processing module named Focal FasterNet block (FFNB) and propose two new detection scales based on this module, which makes the shallow features and deep features fully integrated. The proposed multiscale feature fusion network substantially increased the detection performance of the model and reduces the missed detection rate of small objects. The experimental results show that our model has fewer parameters compared to the baseline model and has a mean detection accuracy higher than the baseline model by 7.7%. Compared with other mainstream models, the overall performance of our model is much better. The proposed method effectively improves the ability to detect small objects. There is room to optimize the detection effectiveness of our model for small and feature-less objects (such as bicycle-type vehicles), as we will address in subsequent research. 

UAV-YOLOv8: A Small-Object-Detection Model Based on Improved YOLOv8 for UAV Aerial Photography Scenarios

The rapidly increasing number of drones in the national airspace, including those for recreational and commercial applications, has raised concerns regarding misuse. Autonomous drone detection systems offer a probable solution to overcoming the issue of potential drone misuse, such as drug smuggling, violating people’s privacy, etc. Detecting drones can be difficult, due to similar objects in the sky, such as airplanes and birds. In addition, automated drone detection systems need to be trained with ample amounts of data to provide high accuracy. Real-time detection is also necessary, but this requires highly configured devices such as a graphical processing unit (GPU). The present study sought to overcome these challenges by proposing a one-shot detector called You Only Look Once version 5 (YOLOv5), which can train the proposed model using pre-trained weights and data augmentation. The trained model was evaluated using mean average precision (mAP) and recall measures. The model achieved a 90.40% mAP, a 21.57% improvement over our previous model that used You Only Look Once version 4 (YOLOv4) and was tested on the same dataset.

Drone Detection Using YOLOv5

Drones/unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently grown in popularity due to their inexpensive cost and widespread commercial use. The increased use of drones raises the possibility that they may be employed in illicit activities such as drug smuggling and terrorism. Thus, drone monitoring and automated detection are critical for protecting restricted areas or special zones from illicit drone operations. One of the most challenging difficulties in drone detection in surveillance videos is the apparent likeness of drones against varied backdrops. This paper introduces an automated image-based drone-detection system that uses an enhanced deep-learning-based object-detection algorithm known as you only look once (YOLOv5) to defend restricted territories or special zones from unauthorized drone incursions. The transfer learning to pretrain the model is employed for improving performance due to an insufficient number of samples in our dataset. Furthermore, the model can recognize the detected object in the images and mark the object’s bounding box by joining the results across the region. The experiments show outstanding results for the loss value, drone location detection, precision and recall.

Detection of Unauthorized Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Using YOLOv5 and Transfer Learning

Aiming at the problems of low detection accuracy and large computing resource consumption of existing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) detection algorithms for anti-UAV, this paper proposes a lightweight UAV swarm detection method based on You Only Look Once Version X (YOLOX). This method uses depthwise separable convolution to simplify and optimize the network, and greatly simplifies the total parameters, while the accuracy is only partially reduced. Meanwhile, a Squeeze-and-Extraction (SE) module is introduced into the backbone to improve the model's ability to extract features; the introduction of a Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) in the feature fusion network makes the network pay more attention to important features and suppress unnecessary features. Furthermore, Distance-IoU (DIoU) is used to replace Intersection over Union (IoU) to calculate the regression loss for model optimization, and data augmentation technology is used to expand the dataset to achieve a better detection effect. The experimental results show that the mean Average Precision (mAP) of the proposed method reaches 82.32%, approximately 2% higher than the baseline model, while the number of parameters is only about 1/10th of that of YOLOX-S, with the size of 3.85 MB. The proposed approach is, thus, a lightweight model with high detection accuracy and suitable for various edge computing devices.

A Lightweight Uav Swarm Detection Method Integrated Attention Mechanism

Vision tracking is a well-studied framework in vision computing. Developing a robust visual tracking system is challenging because of the sudden change in object motion, cluttered background, partial occlusion and camera motion. In this study, the state-of-the art visual tracking methods are reviewed and different categories are discussed. The overall visual tracking process is divided into four stages—object initialization, appearance modeling, motion estimation, and object localization. Each of these stages is briefly elaborated and related researches are discussed. A rapid growth of visual tracking algorithms is observed in last few decades. A comprehensive review is reported on different performance metrics to evaluate the efficiency of visual tracking algorithms which might help researchers to identify new avenues in this area. Various application areas of the visual tracking are also discussed at the end of the study.

Vision Tracking: A Survey of the State-of-the-Art

Multi-rotor drones have a wide range of applications in practical scenarios; however, the use of multi-rotor drones for illegal acts is also on the rise, in order to improve the recognition accuracy of multi-rotor drones. A new multi-rotor drone detection algorithm is proposed. Firstly, the Yolov5 backbone is replaced with Efficientlite, thus reducing the number of parameters in the model. Secondly, adaptively spatial feature fusion is injected into the head of the baseline model to facilitate the fusion of feature maps with different spatial resolutions, in order to balance the accuracy loss caused by the lightweight of the model backbone. Finally, a constraint of angle is introduced into the original regression loss function to avoid the mismatch between the prediction frame and the real frame orientation during the training process in order to improve the speed of network convergence. Experiments show that the improved Yolov5s exhibits better detection performance, which provides a superior method for detecting multi-rotor UAVs in real-world scenarios.

An Improved Yolov5 for Multi-Rotor UAV Detection

Color histogram-based trackers have obtained excellent performance against many challenging situations. However, since the appearance of color is sensitive to illumination, they tend to achieve lower accuracy when illumination is severely variant throughout a sequence. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel hyperline clustering based discriminant model, an illumination invariant model that is able to distinguish the object from its surrounding background. Furthermore, we exploit this model and propose an anchor based scale estimation to cope with shape deformation and scale variation. Numerous experiments on recent online tracking benchmark datasets demonstrate that our approach achieve favorable performance compared with several state-of-the-art tracking algorithms. In particular, our approach achieves higher accuracy than comparative methods in the illumination variant and shape deformation challenging situations.
