TL;DR: In this paper, an active spacecraft potential control instrument (ASPOC) is proposed to measure the cold component of the ambient plasma in the case of the Geotail spacecraft with ion emitters of the liquid-metal ion-source type.

Self-consistent determination of the electrostatic potential barrier due to the photoelectron sheath near a spacecraft
TL;DR: In this paper, a spherically symmetric model of the photoelectron sheath around a spacecraft (with conductive surface) is analyzed, and an algebraic equation is set up to describe the current equilibrium between the escaping photoelectrons, incoming ambient plasma electrons, and the artificially emitted charged particles at the surface of the spacecraft.

Spacecraft Potential Control Using Indium Ion Sources - Experience and Outlook Based on Six Years of Operation in Space
K. Torkar,M. Fehringer,H. Arends,R. Goldstein,Réjean Grard,B. T. Narheim,Richard C. Olsen,A. Pedersen,W. Riedler,F. R. Denauer,R. Schmidt,K. Svenes,E. C. Whipple,Roy Torbert,Hua Zhao +14 more
- 01 Nov 1998
TL;DR: In this article, a beam of positive ions with energies from 5 to 8 keV is considered to be the most efficient approach for measurements by particle instruments at low energies by stabilizing and reducing the high positive potentials sunlit spacecraft acquire when they are embedded in tenuous plasma.

Minimizing the adverse effect of the photosheath around a spacecraft
TL;DR: In this paper, the relationship between the hidden low energy electron population and the potential barrier in the photoelectron sheath was analyzed and the parameters of the photoheath potential barrier, such as the height and position of the barrier, were analyzed.
Spacecraft potential control for Double Star
Klaus Torkar,H. Arends,Wolfgang Baumjohann,C. P. Escoubet,Andrew Fazakerley,M. Fehringer,G. Fremuth,H. Jeszenszky,G. Laky,B. T. Narheim,W. Riedler,F. Rüdenauer,W. Steiger,K. R. Svenes,Hua Zhao +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the Double Star TC-1/ASPOC instrument to improve low energy particle measurements on board by emitting a positive ion beam, which has been successfully applied on several other spacecraft.
