Additive Manufacturing of Polymer-Derived Ceramics: Materials, Technologies, Properties and Potential Applications

Additive manufacturing (AM) technology has revolutionized the way goods are developed and produced, with numerous uses in aerospace, automotive, medical, and consumer goods industries. Its significance within the context of the fourth industrial revolution, characterized by digitalization, automation, and interconnected systems, is imperative. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of AM, including its background, underlying concepts, processes, materials, implicit benefits, and inherent limitations. It also examines the various applications of AM for the manufacture and remanufacture of parts, components, and products. This study assesses current advances in AM, such as progress in multi-material and large-scale 3D printing, improvements in speed and efficacy, precision and accuracy, automation, and sustainability. Likewise, the study investigates some of the present issues confronting AM, such as material limits, cost, intellectual property, and sustainability. Furthermore, by analyzing the review articles on various aspects of AM, this paper provides a more comprehensive overview of the subject. Finally, the study concludes with highlights of future prospects and emerging AM trends. This comprehensive review is intended to offer readers a clear grasp of AM, its inherent processes, and recent advances, as well as the challenges that must be addressed in order to fully realize the possibilities it holds. 

Revolutionizing manufacturing: A comprehensive overview of additive manufacturing processes, materials, developments, and challenges

Additive manufacturing (AM) combines materials to create parts from three-dimensional model data, often layer by layer. AM is mainly deployed to fabricate complicated geometrical components with high efficiency and low cost. Selective laser melting (SLM) is an AM method that uses a high-power laser beam to melt powder material layer upon layer completely. Multi-material in SLM is due to its potential for specific applications where different material properties achieve comprehensive performance at different locations of the directly manufactured parts. The process parameters (PP) used in SLM are layer thickness (LT), laser power (LP), hatch spacing (HS), and scanning speed (SS). It mainly impacts the porosity, residual stress, fatigue, surface roughness, density, mechanical properties, and product microstructure. This article investigates the selection of suitable PP’s and the influence of SLM PP’s on the quality of parts fabricated from different materials and combinations of multi-materials structures. Finally, it helps to understand each process parameter of SLM, and the future trends of AM in different areas are concluded. 

A process parameters review on Selective laser melting-based additive manufacturing of Single and Multi-Material: Microstructure, Properties, and machinability aspects

The developments in ceramic vat photopolymerization technology have the potential to revolutionize the manufacture and application of complex and functional ceramics. At present, there are still defects in parts fabricated by ceramic vat photopolymerization, which are caused by selected materials, layer-by-layer printing, and part processing. These defects restrict the shaping accuracy and performance of ceramic parts and hinder the further application and development of this technology. It is necessary to systematically review the generation and control of defects in ceramic vat photopolymerization. This review summarized the defect types (geometry-related defects and performance-related defects), defect detection methods, theoretical analysis and numerical modeling simulation of defects, defect generation mechanisms, defect control, and innovative methods of ceramic vat photopolymerization. The feasible methods of defect control and performance improvement were proposed, including particle coating, slurry improvement, new green part processing methods, novel printing manners, composite ceramic or precursor, optimized debinding and sintering. The main challenges (caused by both additive printing and traditional processes; caused by the light-curing principle itself; and the right application for various ceramic vat photopolymerization technologies) were discussed, and future research directions for ceramic vat photopolymerization had prospected.

Recent advances in development of additively manufactured thermosets and fiber reinforced thermosetting composites: technologies, materials, and mechanical properties

Among engineering materials, ceramics are indispensable in energy applications such as batteries, capacitors, solar cells, smart glass, fuel cells and electrolyzers, nuclear power plants, thermoelectrics, thermoionics, carbon capture and storage, control of harmful emission from combustion engines, piezoelectrics, turbines and heat exchangers, among others. Advances in additive manufacturing (AM) offer new opportunities to fabricate these devices in geometries unachievable previously and may provide higher efficiencies and performance, all at lower costs. This article reviews the state of the art in ceramic materials for various energy applications. The focus of the review is on material selections, processing, and opportunities for AM technologies in energy related ceramic materials manufacturing. The aim of the article is to provide a roadmap for stakeholders such as industry, academia and funding agencies on research and development in additive manufacturing of ceramic materials toward more efficient, cost-effective, and reliable energy systems.
