Aim

The aim of the present study was to assess the oral health impact and to evaluate the association between socioeconomic status, oral health behaviors, dental caries experience, and oral health impacts among children enrolled in the National Cadets Corps.



Methods

A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 389 male cadets aged between 13 and 15 years. Sociodemographic and oral health behavior-related information was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The Child–Oral Impacts on Daily Performances (OIDP) Index was used to assess the oral impacts. The cadets were clinically examined for caries experience using decayed, missing, filled tooth index.



Results

A total of 359 children completed all stages of the survey. The mean age of the children was 13.96 ± 0.6 years. Fifty-five percent of the participants experienced at least one impact in the last 3 months. The mean OIDP score for the population was 12.13 ± 5.85. The most prevalent impact was difficulty in eating (37%), and the least affected daily performance was social contact (17%). Dental attendance and caries experience were significant predictors of oral impacts.



Conclusions

The present study revealed that oral health had a significant impact on quality of life. Caries experience and past dental visits were associated with oral health-related quality of life among this study population.

Oral health impact, dental caries, and oral health behaviors among the National Cadets Corps in South India

Oral health is vital for the general well-being, overall body health and the quality of life throughout our lifetime. Most of the oral diseases and conditions are largely related to the maintenance of oral hygiene, lacking that people suffer from diverse oral diseases at different times in their life. With greater life expectancy, the individuals have teeth involved with periodontal diseases that would not only require professional care but also home gum care for them to last a lifetime. Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP) has recognized the need for systematic documents to update everyday clinical practice of general dental practitioners and have provided evidence-based consensus documents, namely good clinical practice recommendations from time to time to raise the oral health-related awareness and standards of oral healthcare delivery across the country. The current set of clinical practice recommendations focused to “Gum Care for All”, is aimed at emphasizing and enhancing the awareness regarding oral health promotion, maintenance, and disease prevention. Twenty-five subject matter experts from across the nation, prepared these recommendations after a thorough literature review and group discussions. The document has been prepared in three distinct sections, namely pretherapeutic, therapeutic, and post therapeutic, to provide guidance during the respective phases of patient management and may serve as a quick and concise reference to the readers. The guidelines shall provide the distinct definitions, signs and symptoms, treatment required; recall visit specifications for plausible clinical case situations, home care advice regarding maintenance of oral hygiene including information on brushing technique, care and change of brush, use of interdental aids, and mouthwashes, etc. The document should advocate and guide the combined efforts of general dentists, and the population at large toward an empowered, evidence based, integrated, and comprehensive oral health care, which shall enhance the healthful functioning and longevity of the dentition and general health of the individual.

ISP good clinical practice recommendations for gum care

Background Dental caries is a multifactorial disease that affects the general population. After reviewing the scientific literature, no studies were found on the index of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) in the Peruvian police population. The objective was to evaluate the DMFT index and severity level of the disease in police personnel of the Ancash region, Peru. Material and Methods Cross-sectional prevalence study. The medical records of the police personnel in activity were reviewed and each subject was examined from May 2012 to May 2013. The study was authorized by the Director of the PNP-Huaraz Ancash Polyclinic as part of the activities of the civil SERUMS personnel in the area of odontology. The sample was census with 925 subjects. The data was systematized following the methodology recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The statistics were analyzed by Chi square test with significance p<0.05, Pearson test and ANOVA. Results The prevalence of caries in the police population was 73.4%. The DMFT index was 10.63 ± 4.96 (p<0.01). The severity of the disease in relation to age was 0.77 ± 0.41 with a high risk in this population. The DMFT index in females 128/925 and males 797/925 was 10.43 and 10.67 respectively. There is an inversely proportional relationship in the number of teeth filled with dental amalgam in policemen older than 35 years versus the number of teeth sealed with material other than dental amalgam in policemen under 35 years. Only 0.8% 7/925 had dental prostheses and 58.6% (542/925) of the subjects needed oral rehabilitation. Conclusions The severity of dental caries is high, strategies are required to improve intervention in this sector, developing effective programs in oral health in the short, medium and long term. Dental caries in the peruvian police population.

Objectives: To assess the oral health status and treatment needs of police personnel in police stations of three districts (Ambala, Yamunanagar and Kurukshetra) within 35 km radius around M.M.C.D.S.R. Mullana. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on all the available police personnel (652) at 22 police stations, 2 S.P. offices and a ‘Police Line’. The data were recorded on modified W.H.O format (1997). Blood pressure was recorded and varicose veins were checked.Results: The mean age of subjects was 41.02 years (SD= 12.29), 98.9 % (645) were males and 1.1 % (7) were females. Hypertension was the most common (9.97%) self reported systemic condition. 54.14% (353) subjects reported to be in need of some dental treatment and more than half of these subjects blamed ‘lack of time’ as the major reason for not being able to get that treatment done. The prevalence of dental caries was 54.3 % and the mean DMFT was 3.05. Mean number of teeth requiring filling and extraction were 0.44 and 0.67 respectively. 31.29 % subjects needed some prosthesis in maxillary while 40. 03 % subjects needed some prosthesis in mandibular arch (p<0.05) whereas a very small number of subjects possessed some dental prosthesis. Regarding highest CPI score, 23.6 % subjects had a healthy periodontium while maximum subjects (61.3 %) had a score 2. Conclusion: Prevalence of dental caries was quite low. Despite a high prosthetic need, only a small number of subjects possessed dental prosthesis. Overall periodontal status was good with a high number of subjects having completely healthy periodontium. The high level of ‘felt’ dental needs of the subjects seemed to be due to lack of time to visit a dentist. Their nature of job is such that they are subjected to physical, mental and emotional stress.

“Assessment Of Oral Health Status And Treatment Needs Of Police Personnel Of Haryana, India”

The aim of this study was to determine the dental health status and treatment needs of personnel in the Infantry Regiment of the Malaysian Territorial Army (TA). This cross-sectional study involved stratified and systematic random sampling with a total sample size of 300. Dental health status and treatment needs were assessed using the standard WHO oral assessment criteria (1997). The prevalence of caries experience was 96 (mean +/- SD DMFT decayed, missing, filled teeth = 8.0 +/- 5.5). Active decay prevalence was high (85%; mean +/- SD = 3.6 +/- 3.1) indicating high unmet treatment need. Missing teeth prevalence was high (69%; mean +/- SD = 2.8 +/- 3.7). Filled teeth prevalence was low (56%, mean +/- SD = 1.5 +/- 2.0). In all, 90% of participants required some form of dental treatment, of whom 85% required restorative treatment, 5% advanced restorative treatment, 36.7% extractions, and 45.3% prosthetic treatment. These findings suggest that there was a high need for dental treatment in the Infantry Battalions of Malaysian TA Regiments and the service must be made available to cater to the needs.

Dental Health Status and Treatment Needs in the Infantry Regiment of the Malaysian Territorial Army

The objectives of community dentistry are to motivate the public to change their behaviour and planning for prevention and control of dental diseases. Oral health of army personnel is recognized as equally important in relation to general health. In the present study, the army personnel were inspected comprehensively utilizing the latest WHO survey proforma 1997 to know the pattern of oral diseases, prevalence of deleterious oral habits and treatment needs. The aim of this epidemiological study was to assess the oral health status and treatment needs of army personnel.

Community Dentistry in Armed Forces.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a rising concern in clinical dentistry that causes pain and discomfort and negatively affects the quality of life of patients. Indian Society of Periodontology conducted a nationwide survey, involving 3000 dentists in December 2020, which revealed significant knowledge gaps regarding DH, viz., under-diagnosis, incorrect differential diagnosis, and treatment strategies/recommendations for the management of DH patients in daily clinical practice. The current paper has been envisioned and conceptualized to update the practicing Indian dentists regarding the so-called enigma of dentistry “Dentin Hypersensitivity,” based on the best available contemporary evidence. An expert panel was constituted comprising 30 subject experts from across the country, which after extensive literature review and group discussions formulated these recommendations. The panel advocated routine screening of all dentate patients for exposed dentin areas and DH to avoid under-diagnosis of the condition and suggested an early preventive management. Consensus guidelines/recommendations for the use of desensitizing agents (DAs) at home, including the use of herbal agents, are also provided within the backdrop of the Indian context. The guidelines recommend that active management of DH shall be accomplished by a combination of at home and in-office therapies, starting with the simplest and cost-effective home use of desensitizing toothpastes. A diagnostic decision tree and a flowchart for application in daily practice are designed to manage the patients suffering from DH or presenting with exposed dentin areas in dentition. Various treatment methods to manage DH have been discussed in the paper, including the insights from previously published treatment guidelines. Further, a novel system of classification of DH patients based on specific case definitions has been developed for the first time. Explicit charts regarding the available treatment options and the chronology of institution of the agent, for the management in different case categories of DH, have been provided for quick reference. The management strategy takes into account a decision algorithm based on hierarchy of complexity of treatment options and intends to improve the quality of life of the patient by long-term maintenance with an innovatively defined triple C's or 3Cs approach.
