Improved Prophylaxis and Decreased Rates of Preventable Harm With the Use of a Mandatory Computerized Clinical Decision Support Tool for Prophylaxis for Venous Thromboembolism in Trauma
Elliott R. Haut,Brandyn D. Lau,Franca Kraenzlin,Deborah B. Hobson,Peggy S. Kraus,Howard Carolan,Adil H. Haider,Christine G. Holzmueller,David T. Efron,Peter J. Pronovost,Michael B. Streiff +10 more
TL;DR: Implementation of a mandatory computerized provider order entry-based clinical decision support tool significantly improved compliance with VTE prophylaxis guidelines in hospitalized adult trauma patients and was associated with a significant decrease in the rate of preventable harm.

Lessons from the Johns Hopkins Multi-Disciplinary Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Prevention Collaborative
Michael B. Streiff,Howard Carolan,Deborah B. Hobson,Peggy S. Kraus,Christine G. Holzmueller,Renee Demski,Brandyn D. Lau,Paula J. Biscup-Horn,Peter J. Pronovost,Elliott R. Haut +9 more
TL;DR: A computerised clinical decision support tool can increase VTE risk stratification and risk-appropriate VTE prophylaxis among hospitalised adult patients admitted to a large urban academic medical centre.

Impact of a venous thromboembolism prophylaxis "smart order set": Improved compliance, fewer events.
Amer M. Zeidan,Michael B. Streiff,Brandyn D. Lau,Syed Rafay Ahmed,Peggy S. Kraus,Deborah B. Hobson,Howard Carolan,Chryso Lambrianidi,Paula B. Horn,Kenneth M. Shermock,Gabriel Tinoco,Salahuddin Siddiqui,Elliott R. Haut +12 more
TL;DR: A VTE prophylaxis computerized clinical decision support‐enabled “smart order set” improved prescription of risk‐appropriate VTE anti-thromboembolism, reduced symptomatic VTE and eliminated preventable harm from VTE without increasing major bleeding.

Prioritizing Health Care Solutions for Pressure Ulcers Using the Quality Function Deployment Process
Simon C. Mathews,Robert A. Stoll,Wayne I. Sternberger,Patrick W. Cox,Tammy L. Tober,Jennifer W. Di Mattina,Cindy Dwyer,Noah Barasch,Howard Carolan,Mark Romig,Peter J. Pronovost,John Barnes,Alan Ravitz,Adam Sapirstein +13 more
TL;DR: A detailed and practical application of quality function deployment is presented that demonstrates the value of applying engineering practices for prioritizing solutions for pressures ulcers specifically and can easily be adapted to other conditions.

Percutaneous Ultrasound Gastrostomy: A Novel Device and Bedside Procedure for Gastrostomy Tube Insertion Using Magnetic and Ultrasound Guidance
R. Gentry Wilkerson,Aliaksei Pustavoitau,Howard Carolan,Nolan Benner,Clark Fischer,Daniel J. Sheets,Peggy I. Wang,Steven Tropello +7 more
TL;DR: The PUMA-G device was used successfully in 29 of 30 cadaver tests, with the one failure attributed to operator error and not the device, and further testing in live patients will assess the safety of the procedure, the speed with which it can be completed, the cost savings, and other benefits the device might offer over the existing gastrostomy procedures.
