Objectives To determine to what degree the predominance of risky sexual behaviour during adolescence is the result of social influence, in particular that of peers, according to the perception of their attitudes and sexual behaviour.Methods Data were collected through structured and confidential individual interviews with 100 adolescents, selected randomly from among 1467 students attending one French high school.Results Although this study is of an exploratory nature, it reveals that the perception of peers is associated with a higher frequency of sexual initiation and commitment, including oral sex, but also commitment to protected sex. Sexual permissiveness of peers is associated with a higher frequency of sexual practices considered risky. The influence of peers on risky sexual behaviour during adolescence

Young people in Laos are more vulnerable to STIs/HIV due to their sexual risk behaviours, low perceptions of risk and their socio-cultural environments. Perceived risk of contracting STIs/HIV is crucial for the assessment of their risk regarding their actual sexual risk behaviors. Thus, the objective of this paper is to explore perceptions of risk related to STIs/HIV and identify factors associated with this perceived risk among adolescents. This was a cross sectional study of sexually experienced adolescents aged 14 to 19 years old in the Luangnamtha province. The multistage sampling techniques were used for selecting 1008 adolescents aged 14-19 years old. Of these, 483 respondents reported having had sexual experience was selected for analysis. Univariate and Logistic regression were performed. Six per cent of respondents reported ever having had anal sex. Slightly less than two thirds initiated their first sexual intercourse before age 15. Two thirds of the sexually experienced males reported two or more sexual partners during their lifetime with the mean 3.1 + 3.65 while only twelve per cent of girls reported this cumulative number of partners. Slightly more than half (57.6%) regarded themselves to have no risk at all with 17.2 per cent considered themselves to have low risk. Respondents had poor knowledge on STIs/HIV. Factors associated with risk perception of getting STIs were: being male, high level of knowledge about STIs and having had symptoms of STIs in last six months. Perceived risk of getting HIV was significantly associated with being male, having more knowledge about STIs and HIV. Adolescents in this study engaged in sexual risk behaviours, but they have low perception of risk getting STI/HIV. Socio-demographic factors, knowledge of STIs/HIV, and the level of exposure to STIs were the main determinants of the risk perception of STIs/HIV. Our finding supports the need to target adolescents in Luangnamtha province for HIV prevention intervention by addressing inaccurate perception of risk and increasing their knowledge on STIs/HIV.

Risk perceptions of STIs/HIV and sexual risk behaviours among sexually experienced adolescents in the Northern part of Lao PDR

This study aims to revisit the studies reported in the area of peer influence with reference to health behavior. Peer groups are social groups that consist of people of the same age and have similar interests and usually equal in terms of the education and social class. Peer groups are important as they tend to provide a space to make friends. They also help provide social and emotional support as well as an identity and a sense of belongingness to a social group, especially during adolescence. The authors have found that sexual behavior is one of the many areas in which teens are influenced by their best friends and peers. Teens are more likely to have sex if their best friends and peers are older, use alcohol or drugs, or engage in other negative behavior. Similarly, they are more likely to have sex if they believe their friends have more positive attitudes toward childbearing, have permissive values about sex, or are actually having sex. The authors have found that most of the studies in this area have been developed have been assessing the negative aspects of peer influence. Understanding important factors related to sexual behavior is important not only to change that behavior; it is important to identify those teens who are most at risk of having sex and unprotected sex. This paper explains the implications for those working to help youth avoid risky sexual behaviors and potential consequences. It is concluded with the recommendations for conducting studies in this direction.

Peer Influence and Adolescent Sexual Behavior Trajectories: Links to Sexual Initation

Adolescents are powerfully influenced by their peers and tend to match their behaviors to what they perceive to be the social norm among other youth. Sexual behavior is one area where common misperceptions exist. Social marketing techniques to achieve positive behavioral change may correct these misperceptions. Here we describe an innovative approach to altering teen pregnancy prevention norms – the development and implementation of a social norms marketing campaign. The campaign is undertaken as part of a larger pregnancy prevention program in the Taking Responsible Actions in Life (TRAIL) project. Reported adolescent sexual norms and the development of a social marketing campaign to correct youth misperceptions

Het centrale doel van dit proefschrift was om de relatie tussen seksueel risicovol gedrag (SRB) van adolescenten en jong volwassenen en gedragsfactoren verkennen (bijvoorbeeld het gebruik van alcohol, vorige seksueel gedrag), psychologische factoren (bv. extraversie, welzijn) en sociale factoren (bijvoorbeeld familie structuur, opvoeding, sociale steun). Behavioural factoren lijken te zijn nauw verwant aan SRB dan (andere) psychische factoren. Factoren zoals dronken en met vroege seks waren sterk geassocieerd met SRB (meerdere seksuele partners en seks in risicovolle omstandigheden) van de jonge volwassen mannen en vrouwen. Van de vijf verkend psychologische factoren slechts twee (extraversie en religiositeit) waren geassocieerd met SRB. Bovendien studenten die gemeld seks te hebben gehad voor de eerste keer op de leeftijd van 17 of hoger waren significant minder kans om te rapporteren die deelnemen aan de twee soorten SRB wordt onderzocht (sex onder alcohol-of drugsgebruik invloed is geweest en meerdere seksuele partners). Bij adolescenten ons onderzoek over de ouderlijke processen bleek dat ouderlijk toezicht is sterker geassocieerd met SRB dan ouderlijke sociale steun. In het bijzonder werd een lagere controle door de vader significant geassocieerd met de vroege eerste geslachtsgemeenschap bij meisjes en met inconsistente gebruik van condooms bij jongens. Aan de andere kant psychosociale variabelen, zoals angst, sociale steun van anderen en vrienden, sociaal disfunctioneren en positief gevoel van eigenwaarde onderscheid maken tussen jongeren die seks hebben gehad (zowel riskant of veilig) en adolescenten die dat niet hadden, maar ze maken geen onderscheid tussen adolescenten die last hebben gehad risicovolle seks en degenen die hebben gehad veilig vrijen.

Sexual risky behaviour among Slovak adolescents and young adults: social and psychological factors

In 1998 a survey was conducted as part of an evaluation of Perus national sexuality education program which was launched in 1996. In all 6962 students from 38 schools participated respondents completed a questionnaire that explored knowledge and attitudes towards sex covered in the program as well as their background and psychosocial characteristics. The study used bivariate analyses to identify factors affecting the students sexual behavior and condom use. Overall 5% of respondents had had intercourse prior to the survey. The students perceptions of their peers’ sexual activity are one of the most consistent predictors of their own behavior. Another determining factor of sexual behavior identified is self-esteem. Although most background characteristics were not associated with sexual behavior respondents of high socioeconomic status were less likely to be sexually experienced compared to those in the lowest stratum. Similarly socioeconomic status self-esteem and perceptions of peer behavior influenced condom use.
