The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of stimulus rate and gender on auditory brainstem
response (ABR) latency and amplitude in Korean young adults. A total of thirty young adults consisting of fifteen
males and fifteen females participated in the study. We performed this study by analyzing the latencies and
amplitudes of ABR wave I, Ⅲ, and V as a function of low stimulus rate and gender. The stimulus repetition rate
was changed in five steps: 8, 16, 21, 32, and 64/s. Experimental results showed that when stimulus rates increased,
significant differences in the latency and amplitude of wave I, Ⅲ, and V were observed while a gender effect was
found on the latency of wave Ⅲ and the amplitudes of wave I and Ⅲ. As stimulus rates increased, the latencies of
wave I, Ⅲ, and V consistently and progressively increased, whereas the amplitudes of ABR waves inconsistently
changed. The latency shift became longer in wave V than wave I and Ⅲ. The amplitude of wave I, Ⅲ, and V
was greatest at a stimulus rate of 21/s and least at a stimulus rate of 32/s, compared to those of other stimulus
rates. This study will provide beneficial information in developing proper strategies that optimize and enhance the
ABR wave latencies and amplitudes in different gender groups, saving the ABR test time in clinical applications,
and establishing a quantitatively normative database for clinical purposes.

Subjects and MethodZZPast medical records were retrieved from the patients who visited Department of Otolaryngology at Tertiary Referral Hospital from January 2012 to December 2012 and underwent the correlation study between ASSR and PTA with a correlation analysis of frequency. The participants over the age of 15 were classified into the adult group and those below in the children group. ResultsZZThere was a statistically significant correlation between the average hearing threshold of ASSR and PTA (correlation coefficient=0.934). There was a strong correlation between children and adult group, too. With the frequency range of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz, the correlation coefficients were 0.875, 0.896, 0.915, and 0.900, respectively. The degree of hearing loss was classified by using PTA follows: below 25 dB as normal; between 26-55 dB as moderate hearing loss; above 56 dB as severe hearing loss. Correlation coefficients for the above hearing ranges were 0.527, 0.670, and 0.744, respectively. Strong correlation was found between children and adult group, too. ConclusionZZThe comparison results between the average hearing threshold of ASSR and PTA indicated that the threshold of ASSR could well reflect the results of both children and adult group. Background and Objectives There is no clear standard for the difference in the thresholds of auditory brainstem response (ABR) and pure tone audiometry (PTA) when using ABR to evaluate the reliability of PTA. Therefore, we assessed the difference in the thresholds of ABR and PTA for each frequency. Consequently, we present here the actual difference values between the two tests that can be used as a reference in the clinic.Subjects and Method We retrospectively assessed the audiometry results of 129 ears. Ears in which the hearing thresholds of each frequency continuously declined were classified as the downward group. We compared the average of differences between the two tests by frequency. The differences were compared for each hearing level from 50 dB or higher.Results For all ears, the appropriate range of difference value was ±5 dB at 2 kHz. At 1 kHz, the ABR threshold was 10 dB higher than PTA, and it was 10 dB less than PTA at 4 kHz. In the downward group, the difference value increased by 10 dB at 1 kHz and 4 kHz. In the subgroups at each hearing level, the difference value showed similar results (p&lt;0.05).Conclusion The difference in the threshold, regardless of the severity or tendency of hearing loss, was the smallest at 2 kHz and the range was ±5 dB. ABR was 10 dB higher at 1 kHz and and 10 dB lower at 4 kHz than PTA. In the downward group, the difference at 1 kHz and 4 kHz increased by 10 dB each.

Subjects and MethodZZData were obtained from 207 patients (326 ears) with sudden sensorineural hearing loss. All subjects underwent hearing threshold evaluation using pure tone audiogram (PTA), speech audiogram and click-evoked ABR. Linear regression analyses were applied to assess the relation between threshold of click-evoked ABR and threshold of separate frequencies of the PTA and to analyze the correlation between threshold for click-evoked ABR and various pure-tone averages. ResultsZZResults revealed a significant relation between the threshold of click-evoked ABR and PTA thresholds at 0.5 kHz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 3 kHz, and 4 kHz. The highest coefficients of regression and determination were 1.026 for 4 kHz and R=0.663 for 3 kHz, respectively. The coefficient of regression was highest (=0.995) for the mean of PTA thresholds for 3 kHz and 4 kHz. The coefficient of determination was highest for the mean of PTA thresholds for 1, 2, 3 and 4 kHz (R=0.732). Multiple regression analysis showed a significant relation between the ABR threshold and PTA thresholds for 1, 3, and 4 kHz (R=0.732), with highest correlation coefficient at 3 kHz [ABR=11.79+(0.17×1 kHz)+(0.26×3 kHz)+(0.23×4 kHz), (p<0.05)]. ConclusionZZThe threshold of click-evoked ABR correlates best with the mean of PTA thresholds for 1, 2, 3 and 4 kHz. The PTA threshold for 3 kHz has highest correlation with the ABR threshold.
