The present report is submitted in response to General Assembly resolution 61/106, by which the Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Optional Protocol thereto. As requested by the Assembly, a brief overview of the status of the Convention as at 3 August 2007 is presented. The report also contains a brief description of technical arrangements on staff and facilities made necessary for the effective performance of the functions of the Conference of States Parties and the Committee under the Convention and the Optional Protocol, and a description on the progressive implementation of standards and guidelines for the accessibility of facilities and services of the United Nations system. Recent efforts of the United Nations and agencies to disseminate information on the Convention and the Optional Protocol are also described.

1. SUMMARY Computational Thinking [1] is a universal metaphor of reasoning used by both mankind and machines. From this perspective it has the potential to be a comprehensive umbrella for capturing the intrinsic nature of computing and conveying this in an understandable way to students and the general public. It represents a broad spectrum of reasoning across time and disciplines. Learning to count is a beginning of human computational thinking, followed naturally by arithmetic computation and abstract levels of symbol based thinking, often starting with algebra. Counting, arithmetic, symbols and abstract thinking are fundamental to the study of computing.

Computational thinking

Advanced mobile communications and portable computation are now combined in handheld devices called “smartphones”, which are also capable of running third-party software. The number of smartphone users is growing rapidly, including among healthcare professionals. The purpose of this study was to classify smartphone-based healthcare technologies as discussed in academic literature according to their functionalities, and summarize articles in each category. In April 2011, MEDLINE was searched to identify articles that discussed the design, development, evaluation, or use of smartphone-based software for healthcare professionals, medical or nursing students, or patients. A total of 55 articles discussing 83 applications were selected for this study from 2,894 articles initially obtained from the MEDLINE searches. A total of 83 applications were documented: 57 applications for healthcare professionals focusing on disease diagnosis (21), drug reference (6), medical calculators (8), literature search (6), clinical communication (3), Hospital Information System (HIS) client applications (4), medical training (2) and general healthcare applications (7); 11 applications for medical or nursing students focusing on medical education; and 15 applications for patients focusing on disease management with chronic illness (6), ENT-related (4), fall-related (3), and two other conditions (2). The disease diagnosis, drug reference, and medical calculator applications were reported as most useful by healthcare professionals and medical or nursing students. Many medical applications for smartphones have been developed and widely used by health professionals and patients. The use of smartphones is getting more attention in healthcare day by day. Medical applications make smartphones useful tools in the practice of evidence-based medicine at the point of care, in addition to their use in mobile clinical communication. Also, smartphones can play a very important role in patient education, disease self-management, and remote monitoring of patients.

Agile Development: Do advantages outweigh short comings?

Software development for mobile devices is relative new and has its own challenges, especially when developing a single application that will run on either a PDA or a notebook PC. This work describes the development of a sales system for use by a salesperson in the field. Windows-based devices and Microsoft development tools were used to implement the application for the .NET Framework for the notebook PC and the .NET Compact Framework for the PDA. (One might run into a totally different set of issues attempting to do this with Java and J2ME). Developing a common code base for classes was relative easy, but was difficult for the user interface. Issues faced and lessons learned during the application development are outlined in this work. The application software architecture, hardware, database, and connectivity are also described.

Application development for desktop and PDA-style devices: issues and lessons learned

Classification of reusable software components is essential to successful software reuse initiatives and a critical feature of library development. This paper provides a survey of storage and retrieval methods and highlights the main characteristics of each class of methods. The work focuses on information retrieval methods with emphasis on Component Rank and Latent Semantic Analysis models that are applied to component classification. These models have shown to provide efficient storage and retrieval algorithms as they narrow the results of a user query and provide accurate component selection. Thus, leading to efficient reusable repository. Keyword: Reuse Libraries, Asset Classification, Asset Retrieval, and Retrieval Methods.

Massive Open Online Courses MOOCs are commonly hosted as web servers for learners worldwide to access education and learning materials at low cost. Many of the well-known MOOCs have adopted open source software and database technologies and frequently operate within cloud environments. It is likely that the well-known software security vulnerabilities may manifest to MOOC-based applications. Unfortunately, few studies have identified a set of common vulnerabilities applicable to MOOC-based applications. This paper1 presents an exploratory study of potential security vulnerabilities and challenges for MOOC platforms, and it provide some guidelines and suggestions to mitigate these concerns. This study helps practitioners educators and developers to adopt MOOC applications while considering potential vulnerabilities and be prepared to deal with these risks.
