A compact ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass fllter (BPF) with dual notch bands is presented using a tri-layer structure. In the design of UWB BPFs, it is desired to have a uniform 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz full-band transmission response. Dual notch bands are generated for flltering out the interferences caused by strong signals transmitted from WLAN and/or WiMAX systems at 5.8GHz and 3.5GHz, respectively. The sharp rejection of WiMAX signals is achieved by adding meander open-loop resonators on the middle layer. Another rejection of WLAN signals is introduced by adding a C- shaped resonator on the bottom layer. The proposed fllter is not only realized theoretically but also verifled by a full-wave electromagnetic simulation. The designed tri-layer UWB BPF with dual notch bands was fabricated by two FR4 printed circuit boards with the permittivity of 4.4 and the thickness of 0.8mm. The total area is 11mm£10:5mm.

Compact Tri-Layer Ultra-Wideband Bandpass Filter with Dual Notch Bands

New ultra-wideband (UWB) band-pass filters (BPFs) with multiple (triple and quadruple) notches are proposed. A systematic approach is demonstrated to establish one to four or more notch-bands within the passband of a UWB BPF on a single-layer substrate using μ-strip technology, while avoiding the use of any via-holes. The proposed filters are based on parallel integration of gap-coupled microstrip resonators (GCMR) and two tri-section stepped-impedance resonators (TSSIR) to generate multiple notches. Two notches are produced by the use of TSSIR fundamental and first spurious resonance frequencies and the third and fourth notches are introduced by developing transmission zeros using additional integrated GCMR. Two samples of triple and quadruple notch-band UWB filters are fabricated and tested. In comparison to the previous triple single-layer notch-band BPFs with via-holes, the proposed single-layer triple notch BPF offers a size reduction of around 52%. The authors have also expanded the concept and designed a new quadruple notch-band UWB BPF. The proposed filter uses only a single layer and can be easily mass-produced with low cost.

Developing single-layer ultra-wideband band-pass filter with multiple (triple and quadruple) notches

This article discusses a technique based on combination of multimode resonators MMR and complementary split ring resonators CSRR to design multi notch-bands ultra wide-band UWB band-pass filters BPF. The proposed structure consists of two parallel multimode resonators, resulting in a dual notch-band UWB BPF, integrated with a single cell of CSRR to realize the third notch-band. The mechanism of realizing the notch-bands is mathematically presented and a triple notch-bands UWB BPF is designed, simulated and fabricated. The overall size of the proposed filter is reported to be around 36 × 7.7 mm2 where a size reduction of around 35% is demonstrated in comparison to the conventional filter. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel triple notch-bands ultra wide-band band-pass filters using parallel multi-mode resonators and CSRRs

In this study, the authors investigate compact half-wavelength slotline resonators and its applications to compact ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter designs. The circuit models have been developed for the proposed UWB bandpass filters. By introducing additional slotlines and properly rearranging the filter geometry, the passband frequency response and upper stopband performance are improved. The basic filter and modified UWB filter have been designed, fabricated and validated to demonstrate the proposed design methodology. Their calculated, simulated and measured results show good agreement. The modified UWB filter has extremely compact size of 8.5 mm×7 mm. Both simulated and measured results show that the fabricated modified UWB filter has an UWB passband with a fractional bandwidth of 117.8%.

Design and analysis of compact BPF with dual notch bands based on stepped‐impedance resonator for UWB applications

A compact ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter (BPF) with a controllable notch band is proposed and implemented for the application in UWB wireless communication system. In terms of a recently-proposed filter synthesis theory, a short-circuited-stub-loaded multi-mode resonator based UWB filter is designed to create an ultra-wide passband, within which a narrow notch (rejection) band is introduced by an external coupled stepped-impedance resonator (SIR). The location of the notch band is controlled by the proper selection of the high-low impedance ratio and electric length of the SIR. A simulative investigation exhibits that the external SIR is able to create narrower notch band than other conventional techniques, such as open-circuited stubs, spur-lines and embedded inline stubs. In addition, since the distortion of the filter characteristics, introduced by the external SIR at non-resonance frequencies, can be neglected, the proposed UWB notch filter can be implemented by the design of UWB BPF and external SIR respectively. As an example, an FCC UWB filter (BW: 3.1∼10.6GHz) with a WLAN notch band was designed, simulated and fabricated. A very good agreement between the measured and predicted filter characteristics validated the proposed filter prototype and corresponding design theory.
