Method and system for managing a plurality of remote assets, such as a fleet mobile assets is provided. The method allows for collecting data regarding each of a plurality of remote assets. The collected data is used to develop historical information regarding actual usage of each remote asset. The information is distributed via a global information network.

A document processing system comprises an input receptacle (16) for receiving documents. A transport mechanism (18) receives the documents from the input receptacle (16) and transports the documents past a full image scanner (12) and a discrimination unit (14). An output receptacle (20) receives the documents from the transport mechanism (18) after being transported past the full image scanner (12) and the discrimination unit (14). The full image scanner (12) includes means for obtaining a full video image of said documents, means for obtaining an image of a selected area of said documents, and means for obtaining information contained in said selected area of said document. A system controller (10) directs the flows of documents over the transport mechanism (18).

A system (8) for managing multiple dispensing units by communicating information through a communications network (12) is provided. The system includes a plurality of dispensing units (10) operable to transmit and receive information through the network. Each dispensing unit includes a plurality of bins (20) operable to hold a quantity of product. Each dispensing unit includes a plurality of reference level sensors (72) where each reference level sensor is coupled to an associated bin. Each reference level sensor is operable to determine when the quantity of product in the associated bin drops below a reference level (76) that is higher than an out of stock level (82) of the associated bin. Each dispensing unit includes a controller subsystem (34) coupled to the plurality of bins, to the plurality of reference level sensors, and to the network. The controller subsystem is operable to monitor conditions of the dispensing unit, to transmit status messages responsive to an occurrence of one of a plurality of defined events, and to receive command messages. The system further includes a dispensing unit controller system (14) operable to communicate through the network. The dispensing unit controller system is operable to receive status messages from each of the dispensing units, to process the status messages, and to transmit command messages to each of the dispensing units. One command message can be an instruction to a dispensing unit to download a software module to update an existing software module in the controller subsystem of the dispensing unit.

An apparatus for currency discrimination comprises first and second stationary scanheads, disposed on opposite sides of a bill transport path, for scanning respective first and second opposing surfaces of a bill traveling along the bill transport path and for producing respective output signals. The bill travels along the transport path in the direction of a predetermined dimension of the bill. A memory stores master characteristic patterns corresponding to associated predetermined surfaces of a plurality of denominations of genuine bills. Sampling circuitry samples the output signals associated with the respective first and second opposing surfaces of the scanned bill. A signal processor is programmed to determine which one of the first and second opposing surfaces corresponds to the associated predetermined surfaces of the plurality of denominations of genuine bills. The processor then correlates the output signal associated with the one of the first and second opposing surfaces corresponding to the associated predetermined surfaces with the master characteristic patterns to identify the denomination of the scanned bill.

A centralized control system comprising interface cir­cuits which are provided in respective terminal devices re­quiring field service such as copying machines or automatic vending machines and collect functional information concern­ing functions of the terminal devices and abnormality infor­mation showing their abnormality; communication units which are provided at every one or plural interfaces circuits and transmit collected information as the need arises; and re­mote control device which receives transmitted information and selectively displays it on a display unit to execute a plurality of control processing at every terminal device. Abnormality information is announced whenever it occurs or at a predetermined time according to a degree of abnormal­ity, and information concerning the abnormality information announced is displayed on a part or full of the whole dis­play picture screen concerning all the control processing. Further, a record of the abnormality information is stored and displayed and also information on a function along with usage quantity information of consumable goods are displayed in lists, thus notice of abnormality when it occurs and search for its cause are accurately conducted. Still fur­ther the system accurately predicts a date for replacement or supply of the consumable goods on the basis of usage quantity information, thus reducing using-up of the con­ sumable goods.
