A scrolling device for a computer may include a touch-sensitive surface, which may be elongated and/or have one or more active regions. Scrolling, as displayed on the screen, may further be rounded to the nearest document text line and/or distance unit, even though a more precise scrolling location value may be stored and/or tracked.

Research is performed according to a methodology based on four phases: Requirements; Collection; Analysis; and Reporting. During the Requirements phase, users records objectives for the research project and items of interest in a Personal Dictionary. Interactive visual displays are provided that model the contents of documents according to items of interest, so that the users can efficiently and quickly scan large volumes of information to determine their relevancy. During the Analysis phase data is analyzed, compared, related, visualized, and understood in terms of the items of interest. Relationships between data items are recorded and automatically maintained. Knowledge is added to the data items in terms of written comments and relationships between items. Relationship diagrams are provided that graphically depict relationships between any two items of interest. The relationship diagrams display relationships according to degrees of separation. Users are instantly presented with direct and distant relationships between items of interest. During the Dissemination phase users create reports that are automatically sent to other users. Documents and other data files are bookmarked during the Analysis phase so that they are instantly retrievable during the Dissemination phase and included in the final report.

In some embodiments, these techniques and apparatuses enable multi-application environments having combinations of immersive interfaces, windows-based interfaces, and a desktop treated as an immersive interface.

A computer system, user interface component and method utilize a non-linear scroll bar to provide variable mappings between a scroll bar and different portions of a document, and/or between a scroll bar and different subranges of a range of values selectable by the scroll bar. As a result, a scroll bar may be configured to vary the relative scroll rate of a portion of a document to either emphasize or de-emphasize that portion relative to other portions of the document. Generally, emphasized portions of a document are allocated a relatively larger portion of a scroll bar (i.e., with a relatively lower scroll rate), such that navigation to and within such portions is facilitated relative to other portions of the document.

Computer system, user interface component and method utilizing non-linear scroll bar

The present invention relates to systems and methods that associate graphical indicia with a scroll bar, wherein the graphical indicia provides a relative location of a user-identified focus point within a set of data. The graphical indicia can be employed by the user to efficiently navigate through the data in order to position the focus point within a viewing window of a user interface. In one aspect, the user can manually maneuver a slider associated with scroll bar proximate to the graphical indicia to position the focus point with the viewing window. In another aspect, the user can invoke the graphical indicia to automatically position the focus point within the viewing window. Furthermore, the systems and methods of the present invention provide for multiple foci to be identified, associated with respective graphical indicia and tracked, and multi-dimensional tracking via a plurality of scroll bars and respective sliders.

Disclosed is a scroll bar with jump tags representing preferred set of scroll positions. Jump tags are displayed so that user can select a scroll position in the preferred set. When it is selected, the current scroll position changes immediately, or jumps, to the selected scroll position. User can also create a new jump tag and record current scroll position for jumping back to later.
