a b s t r a c t By analyzing a huge amount of point-of-sale data collected from Japanese supermarkets, we find power law relationships between price and sales numbers. The estimated values of the exponents of these power laws depend on the category of products; however, they are independent of the stores, thereby implying the existence of universal human purchase behavior. The rate of sales numbers around these power laws are generally approximated by log-normal distributions implying that there are hidden random parameters, which might proportionally affect the purchase activity.

Collective purchase behavior toward retail price changes

Following the work of Okuyama, Takayasu and Takayasu [Okuyama, Takayasu and Takayasu 1999] we analyze huge databases of Japanese companies’ financial figures and confirm that the Zipf’s law, a power law distribution with the exponent -1, has been maintained over 30 years in the income distribution of Japanese companies with very high precision. Similar power laws are found not only in income distribution of company’s income, but also in the distributions of capital, sales and number of employees.

Statistical Laws in the Income of Japanese Companies

We introduce a solvable model of randomly growing systems consisting of many independent subunits. Scaling relations and growth rate distributions in the limit of infinite subunits are analysed theoretically. Various types of scaling properties and distributions reported for growth rates of complex systems in a variety of fields can be derived from this basic physical model. Statistical data of growth rates for about 1 million business firms are analysed as a real-world example of randomly growing systems. Not only are the scaling relations consistent with the theoretical solution, but the entire functional form of the growth rate distribution is fitted with a theoretical distribution that has a power-law tail.

By analyzing international company data we find that company size distributions are not universal but clearly depend on country. In each country, the size distributions for different categories of business are quite similar. In order to understand the country dependence we introduce a numerical model of company size which is based on two effects: stochastic competitive growth by capital exchange, and deterministic protection of small companies by equi-partition of taxed wealth. A power law distribution is realized when the protection effect is negligible. The model is also consistent with the empirical laws for company's growth rates.
