A photograph of a basketmaker and photographs of other refugee artisans published in the August 1956 issue of Interiors magazine iterated some common themes of refugee narratives during a decade of significant migration that saw the United Nations sponsor World Refugee Year in 1959. Of particular interest are the ways the publication of the basketmaker photograph helped to demonstrate how Vietnamese refugee artisans suited the needs of an American State Department-led aid project directed by the industrial designer Russel Wright in South Vietnam from 1955–61. The project aimed to export Vietnamese craft to the American middle class as a way to bring South Vietnam into the Free World during the Cold War. This essay explores how the photograph served the American State Department agenda by characterizing its subject in terms of pathos and need. To this point, it helped to allay American anxieties about supporting refugee artisans by depoliticizing the “refugee problem” and resolving it. In this case, refugee photography expressed how the interests of American diplomacy were linking to the American middle class as a demographic becoming synonymous with consumption and whiteness.

The advent of information technology and science has affected almost every sphere of human life and also businesses. While traditional quality management practices were relying upon data collection-based approach, the upcoming generation demands a predictive maintenance system for quality control to cater to the need for real-time digitally generated data. Unlike the traditional quality management approach, the focus of such predictive maintenance system will be more on defect prevention instead of defect reduction. Understanding the changing scenario of quality management practices is, therefore, relevant to examine in order to reflect upon the contemporary need of the market. Hence, this research paper is aimed to propose a continuous thread of discussion regarding the quality management environment from the initiation of quality management practices to the futuristic digital economy. Various dimensions of quality management practices over different generations are reviewed and discussed in this paper. In addition to this, the paper also proposes a possible future scenario of quality management practices with reference to different dimensions like changing customer need, economic conditions, business environment, technology, etc.

Quality Management: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Since the industrial revolution, the craftsman has occupied an increasingly precarious position in society. The once obvious and natural role of craft is threatened. Craft production sits in uneasy tension with forces of modernity, practicality, industry, economy, and reproduction. These changing tides have instigated shifts in the actual and ideological identity of the craftsperson. Craftspeople have reformulated their conceptions of craft, and adjusted their physical practice in order to continue working. Several identities will be explored here, those of James Krenov, David Pye, Christopher Schwarz, and James Tolpin. These four individuals are fine furniture makers working in the latter half of the twentieth century and the early 2000s. These craftspeople are stating, in the face of obsolescence, that their work has something to offer modern society. Several of them explicitly position their work (both physical and ideological) as a critique of modernity. This essay will be an exploration of their claims to relevance, and underlying assumptions. It will examine how these craftspeople manipulate the history of craft to empower and justify new forms of “craftsmen.” It will consider the efficacy of these identities, whether or not these modern “craftsmen” can enact the change they envision. Finally, their various strengths and weaknesses will be synthesized in order to inform a productive future for craft. ! Meehan, 1

Craft in Modernity

This paper presents initial findings from an ongoing research project that explores possibilities for design and technology to contribute in revitalising traditional Indonesian stitch resist dyeing craft practices. The custom of Indonesian textile making has been mostly based on culture and tradition. In recent decades, the Indonesian traditional textile craft practices have transformed into producing commodity products and have shaped new culture of traditional craft practices. A case study method was conducted in three locations in Indonesia with ethnographic approach, then the findings was analysed with established revitalisation strategies taxonomy and appropriate technology frameworks. A simple and individual tool with a low cost multipurpose technology is recommended to improve the quality and consistency of the pattern as the main focus on revitalising the Indonesian stitch resist dyeing craft practice. Preserving the existing working culture will minimise the internal risk factor and also will be more sustainable in the long term.

The best things made were pervaded by a quality which we call craftsmanship, showing mastery of technique and embodying fitness for purpose, trueness of material, and beauty of form. Craftsmanship was both a method and a quality, the quality being essential, the method incidental, because the methods and tools had changed in the past and were to change again.
