MicroRNA miR-223 modulates NLRP3 and Keap1, mitigating lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in bovine mammary epithelial cells and murine mammary glands
Man Zhou,Herman W. Barkema,Jian Gao,Jingyue Yang,Yue Wang,John P. Kastelic,Sohrab Khan,Gang Liu,Bo Han +8 more
TL;DR: In conclusion, bta-miR-223 mitigated inflammation and oxidative injury by downregulating the NLRP3 inflammasome and Keap1/Nrf2 signaling pathway.

Effectiveness and Economic Viability of Johne's Disease (Paratuberculosis) Control Practices in Dairy Herds
TL;DR: In this article, a Markovian framework using region-specific economic variables was used to investigate the effectiveness of vaccination and the relative economic impact of within-herd prevalence of paratuberculosis in dairy farms.

Longitudinal evaluation of diagnostics in experimentally infected young calves during subclinical and clinical paratuberculosis
Rienske A.R. Mortier,Herman W. Barkema,Karin Orsel,Gregory P Muench,Janet M. Bystrom,Oscar Illanes,Jeroen De Buck +6 more
TL;DR: Five calves were inoculated orally at 2 weeks of age with a dose of 5 × 10 colony-forming units of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis on 2 consecutive days and two calves developed clinical Johne's disease at 12 and 16 months of age.

Bulk tank milk selenium and its association with milk production parameters in Canadian dairy herds
Alejandro Ceballos-Marquez,Herman W. Barkema,Henrik Stryhn,I.R. Dohoo,Gregory P. Keefe,Jeffrey Wichtel +5 more
TL;DR: An observational study was conducted in 63 Canadian dairy farms to evaluate the association of bulk tank milk selenium (Se) concentration (BTSe) with average daily milk yield, milk fat and milk protein, bulk tank somatic cell count, and the probability of being a Staphylococcus aureus-positive herd.

Effects of different culture media on growth of Treponema spp. isolated from digital dermatitis.
TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of culture media (OTEB, NOS and TYGV) and serum supplementation on mixed Treponema spp. dynamics was evaluated by direct microscopic count, optical density, wet weight and a species-specific qPCR and the correlations between these independent methods were calculated.
