Evolutionary algorithms for solving multi-objective problems

Three criteria are established for the evaluation of the utility of multiobjective programing techniques for water resource planning. The criteria are computational efficiency, explicitness of trade offs among objectives, and the amount of information generated for decision making. The multiobjective approaches are classified into generating techniques, techniques which rely on the prior articulation of preferences, and techniques which foster iterative definition of preferences. The methods in the various classes are reviewed and evaluated in terms of the hypothesized criteria. The evaluations are then used in establishing conclusions about the applicability of the multiobjective approaches to water resource problems.

A review and evaluation of multiobjective programing techniques

Utility theory is interested in people's preferences or values and with assumptions about a person's preferences that enable them to be represented in numerically useful ways. The first two sections of this paper say more about what utility is, why people are interested in it, and how it is interpreted and used in the management and behavioral sciences. The third section summarizes a number of utility theories: it may be used either as a concluding overview of the range and variety of utility theories or as a bridge to the final sections. The final eight sections comprise a semi-technical survey of particular theories for readers interested in greater depth.

Utility Theory

: A description and evaluation is made of several existing methods designed to help decision-makers deal with the multiple-decision problem. In all types of decision situations, the alternatives from which a choice must be made are characterized by multiple attributes (or properties). As the number of relevant attributes and alternatives increases, the ability of the decisionmaker to handle the problem decreases, and the information-processing requirements may rapidly exceed the decisionmaker's processing capacity. Methods to deal with this problem include Dominance, Satisficing, Maximin, Minimax, Lexicography, Additive Weighting, Effectiveness Index, Utility Theory, Tradeoffs, and Nonmetric Scaling. Similarities and differences in the various approaches are demonstrated by a simplified weapon system-selection problem.

Comparative evaluation of performance, whether of personnel, products, or projects, may be necessary for purposes of selection, assignment, or improvement. Where multiple criteria are involved, it is useful to derive a single measure which will meaningfully distinguish among the competing items. In deriving such a measure, three factors are significant: 1) The specific purpose of the measure. 2) Type and amount of information available. 3) Relationship between various criteria. Neglect of these factors results in needlessly complicated “scoring” systems or in misleading results. The utility of various techniques is reviewed, and application of a Game Theory approach is discussed in detail.
