COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the recently discovered coronavirus SARS-Cov-2. The disease became pandemic affecting many countries globally, including Brazil. Considering the expansion process and particularities during the initial stages of the epidemic, we aimed to analyze the spatial and spatiotemporal patterns of COVID-19 occurrence and to identify priority risk areas in Minas Gerais State, Southeast Brazil. An ecological study was performed considering all data from human cases of COVID-19 confirmed from the epidemiological week (EW) 11 (March 08, 2020) to EW 26 (June 27, 2020). Crude and smoothed incidence rates were used to analyze the distribution of disease patterns based on global and local indicators of spatial association and space-time risk assessment. Positive spatial autocorrelation and spatial dependence were found. Our results suggest that the metropolitan region of the State capital Belo Horizonte (MRBH) and Vale do Rio Doce mesoregions, as major epidemic foci in the beginning of the expansion process, have had important influence on the dispersion of SARS-CoV-2 in Minas Gerais State. Triangulo Mineiro/Alto Paranaiba region presented the highest risk of infection. In addition, six statistically significant spatiotemporal clusters were identified in the State, three at high risk and three at low risk. Our findings contribute to a greater understanding of the space-time disease dynamic and discuss strategies for identification of priority areas for COVID-19 surveillance and control.

Spatiotemporal dynamics and risk estimates of COVID-19 epidemic in Minas Gerais State: analysis of an expanding process

Identifying sources is crucial for proposing effective actions to combat marine litter pollution. Here, we used an innovative approach to identify hotspots of mismanaged plastic waste (MPW) within Brazil and subsequent leakage to the ocean, based on population density, socio-economic conditions, municipal solid waste management and environmental parameters. We estimated plastic waste generation and MPW for each of the 5570 Brazilian municipalities, which totaled 3.44 million metric tons per year. Then, we estimated the probability of litter mobilization and transport (P) and the relative risk of leakage to the ocean (MPW × P). The Guanabara Bay and La Plata River comprised the main oceanic entry hotspots of litter produced in Brazil. The use of national databases allowed us to increase spatial and temporal granularity, offering a detailed baseline for the application of prevention and mitigation actions. However, overcoming data limitations is still a challenge in Brazil as in other Global South countries.

COVID-19 is an acute respiratory disease that was classified as a pandemic on March 11th, 2020, by the World Health Organization. Many efforts have been made in order to monitor and present the spatial distribution of cases of this disease and at various scales. It is possible to observe many different methodological approaches, such as choropleth maps and cartograms, proportional symbol maps, dynamics or statics, as well as graphs and tables. Each resource adapted to the specificities of the scale or regional context. In order to present methodological contributions for the representation of epidemiological data, we present the spatial distribution of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Minas Gerais until the date of June 21st, 2020, using Univariate Contiguous Areas Cartograms, a Bivariate Choropleth Map and a Proportional Symbol Map for the representation of relative and absolute data. The results showed the tendency of municipalities with larger populations or higher demographic densities to present more confirmed cases of the disease and the measures that relativize the absolute numbers of confirmed cases with the resident population, when represented by cartograms or by the Bivariate Choropleth map, revealed information which used to be visually hidden by the differences of the areas of the municipalities.
