This unique volume is a comprehensive, well-illustrated study of the organization of the white matter pathways of the brain. Schmahmann and Pandya have analyzed and synthesized the corticocortical and corticosubcortical connections of the major areas of the cerebral cortex of the rhesus monkey. The result is a detailed understanding of the constituents of the cerebral white matter and the organization of the fiber tracts. The findings from the 36 cases studied are presented on a single template brain, facilitating comparison of the locations of the different fiber pathways. The summary diagrams provide a comprehensive atlas of the cerebral white matter. The text is enriched by close attention to functional aspects of the anatomical observations. The clinical relevance of the pathways is addressed throughout the text and a chapter is devoted to human white matter diseases. The introductory account gives a detailed historical background. Translations of seminal original observations by early investigators are presented, and when these are considered in the light of the authors' new observations, many longstanding conflicts and debates are resolved. This scholarly book is an important addition to systems and cognitive neuroscience that will be of lasting value to neurobiologists, anatomists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and to their students and trainees.

Fiber Pathways of the Brain

The growing consensus that language is distributed into large-scale cortical and subcortical networks has brought with it an increasing focus on the connectional anatomy of language, or how particular fibre pathways connect regions within the language network. Understanding connectivity of the language network could provide critical insights into function, but recent investigations using a variety of methodologies in both humans and non-human primates have provided conflicting accounts of pathways central to language. Some of the pathways classically considered language pathways, such as the arcuate fasciculus, are now argued to be domain-general rather than specialized, which represents a radical shift in perspective. Other pathways described in the non-human primate remain to be verified in humans. In this review, we examine the consensus and controversy in the study of fibre pathway connectivity for language. We focus on seven fibre pathways-the superior longitudinal fasciculus and arcuate fasciculus, the uncinate fasciculus, extreme capsule, middle longitudinal fasciculus, inferior longitudinal fasciculus and inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus-that have been proposed to support language in the human. We examine the methods in humans and non-human primate used to investigate the connectivity of these pathways, the historical context leading to the most current understanding of their anatomy, and the functional and clinical correlates of each pathway with reference to language. We conclude with a challenge for researchers and clinicians to establish a coherent framework within which fibre pathway connectivity can be systematically incorporated to the study of language.

Beyond the arcuate fasciculus: consensus and controversy in the connectional anatomy of language.

OBJECTIVE: The fiber dissection technique involves peeling away the white matter tracts of the brain to display its three-dimensional anatomic organization. Early anatomists demonstrated many tracts and fasciculi of the brain using this technique. The complexities of the preparation of the brain and the execution of fiber dissection have led to the neglect of this method, particularly since the development of the microtome and histological techniques. Nevertheless, the fiber dissection technique is a very relevant and reliable method for neurosurgeons to study the details of brain anatomic features. METHODS: Twenty previously frozen, formalin-fixed human brains were dissected from the lateral surface to the medial surface, using the operating microscope. Each stage of the process is described. The primary dissection tools were handmade, thin, wooden spatulas with tips of various sizes. RESULTS: We exposed and studied the myelinated fiber bundles of the brain and acquired a comprehensive understanding of their configurations and locations. CONCLUSION: The complex structures of the brain can be more clearly defined and understood when the fiber dissection technique is used. This knowledge can be incorporated into the preoperative planning process and applied to surgical strategies. Fiber dissection is time-consuming and complex, but it greatly adds to our knowledge of brain anatomic features and thus helps improve the quality of microneurosurgery. Because other anatomic techniques fail to provide a true understanding of the complex internal structures of the brain, the reestablishment of fiber dissection of white matter as a standard study method is recommended. Fiber Dissection Technique: Lateral Aspect of the Brain

Due primarily to the extensive disposition of fibers and secondarily to the methodological preferences of researchers, the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) subdivisions have multiple names, complicating SLF research. Here, we collected and reassessed existing knowledge regarding the SLF, which we used to propose a four-term classification of the SLF based mainly on function: dorsal SLF, ventral SLF, posterior SLF, and arcuate fasciculus (AF); these correspond to the traditional SLF II, SLF III or anterior AF, temporoparietal segment of the SLF or posterior AF, and AF or AF long segment, respectively. Each segment has a distinct functional role. The dorsal SLF is involved in visuospatial attention and motor control, while the ventral SLF is associated with language-related networks, auditory comprehension, and articulatory processing in the left hemisphere. The posterior SLF is involved in language-related processing, including auditory comprehension, reading, and lexical access, while the AF is associated with language-related activities, such as phonological processing; the right AF plays a role in social cognition and visuospatial attention. This simple proposed classification permits a better understanding of the SLF and may comprise a convenient classification for use in research and clinical practice relating to brain function.

The superior longitudinal fascicle: reconsidering the fronto-parietal neural network based on anatomy and function.

Gross and microscopic studies by early investigators led the cerebral white matter from being regarded as an amorphous mass to an intricately organized system of fasciculi that facilitate the highest expression of cerebral activity. Here we pay homage to the anatomists whose observations resulted in the evolution of ideas about the cerebral white matter. We also draw attention to limitations of the earlier methodologies and to some of the conflicts and controversies that have characterized this field and that persist in the current literature. We conclude with brief reference to the principles of organization of the fiber pathways derived from our studies in the monkey using the autoradiographic tract tracing technique, another step in the ongoing investigations of the cerebral white matter. This historical review has contemporary relevance because the fiber pathways of the brain are crucial components of the distributed neural circuits that subserve nervous system function; the clinical manifestations of white matter damage are recognized with greater frequency and clarity; and magnetic resonance imaging tractography has made it possible to view these fiber bundles within the living human brain.
