As technology advances, it becomes more feasible to load products with a large number of features, each of which individually might be perceived as useful. However, too many features can make a product overwhelming for consumers and difficult to use. Three studies examine how consumers balance their desires for capability and usability when they evaluate products and how these desires shift over time. Because consumers give more weight to capability and less weight to usability before use than after use, they tend to choose overly complex products that do not maximize their satisfaction when they use them, resulting in “feature fatigue.” An analytical model based on these results provides additional insights into the feature fatigue effect. Presents a complete and comprehensive review of the literature concerning the relationship between information technologies (IT) and total quality management (TQM) and examines the key issues. The examination is made against a number of dimensions of TQM including customer and supplier relationships, workforce management, process flow management and quality data and reporting. Issues concerning the impact that IT is having on these TQM dimensions are highlighted and future potential issues are raised.

The article defines and describes the impacts of Information Technologies on manufacturing, where manufacturing is understood as the process of producing the product capabilities according to customer needs, covering all the steps in the value adding chain. The first impact describes changes in society and industry with a focus on employment and industrial relations. The second impact is on dynamics of technological and business processes by usage of simulation as an interdisciplinary acceleration tool. The third impact deals with both electronics and software as value adding core elements of products. A fourth impact may be identified on classic products, where sensor technologies speed up production processes with a significant quality enhancement. Finally, the impact of information technology on the human user itself is addressed. Cultural change is shown to be necessary and inevitable to tackle the future economical risks of the information age.

Kurzfassung Die Fabrik der Zukunft, vor zehn oder funfzehn Jahren ein gangiges Schlagwort, ist in vielen der publizierten Varianten eher Zukunft geblieben und wurde so nicht zur Gegenwart. Die Fabrik der Gegenwart ist dennoch anders geworden, die Veranderungen kamen jedoch mehr von ausen, der interne Wandel ist die Antwort auf diese Veranderungen. Die Fabrik ist nicht mehr ein abgegrenzter Ort, an dem aus Rohmaterial und Halbzeug das Endprodukt gefertigt wird. Die Endprodukte entstehen vielmehr in einem vielstufigen Netzwerk, raumlich verteilt und vielfach differenziert. Jede Fabrik ist wie ein Knoten in einem umfassenden Netzwerk. Die Begrenzung dieses Netzwerks ist gepragt durch die Sicht auf die jeweilige Problemstellung – unternehmerisch, technologisch, markt- oder kundenbezogen.
