A control system for an appliance utilizing a plurality of peripheral devices includes a controller and a communications bus coupled to the plurality of peripheral devices and to the controller. The controller is configured to receive data from the peripheral devices over the communications bus and transmit control operations to the peripheral devices based on the data received. The communications bus reduces overall wiring requirements due to elimination or reduction of power wiring of the peripheral devices, facilitates distributed displays and human machine interfaces, and allows model differentiation with late point identification by a population of bus connections with a sensor, display, interface, or a blank. A data collision detection scheme is also provided to ensure proper communication along the bus.

A data transmission system for an automotive vehicle includes a plurality of control units installed on the vehicle, and a transmission line connecting the plurality of control units with each other. The transmission line comprises a pair of signal lines to which digital data signals having opposite polarities are delivered for transmission of data. Each of the plurality of control units comprises a first receiver for receiving both of the digital data signals having oppositive polarities and outputting a first difference signal indicative of a difference between the digital data signals, a second receiver for receiving one of the digital data signals and outputting a second difference signal indicative of a difference between the one of the digital data signals and a predetermined reference level set thereto, and a third receiver for receiving the other of the digital data signals and outputting a third difference signal indicative of a difference between the other of the digital data signals and a predetermined reference level set thereto. Detecting of which of the pair of signal lines is faulty, is carried out based on the first difference signal output from the first receiver, the second difference signal output from the second receiver, and the third difference signal output from the third receiver.

An arrangement for monitoring a two-wire bus line for serial transmission of digital data includes a bus subscriber receiving circuit coupled to the two-wire line and including three comparators each having two inputs and an output for producing a logical output signal in dependence of signals at the two inputs. A signal line voltage on each wire of the two-wire bus line is applied, respectively, to the two inputs of a first one of the comparators and one of the two signal line voltages, an auxiliary voltage is applied, respectively, to the two inputs of a second one of the comparators and the other of the two signal line voltages and an auxiliary voltage being applied, respectively, to the two inputs of a third one of the comparators. A logic circuit is coupled to the outputs of the three comparators for simultaneously receiving the logical output signals of at least the second and third comparators and for signaling a fault-free condition of the bus system if all received logical output signals from the comparators are in agreement, and for signaling a fault if all received logical output signals from the comparators are not in agreement.

Arrangement for monitoring a two-wire bus line

A circuit for incorporation into LAN-compatible devices uses both the link integrity test (LIT) pulses and the end of frame delimiter (EOF) waveform information in received data transmissions to detect polarity errors on the twisted-pair media to which the devices are connected. The circuit integrates this information and a new auto-polarity detection/correction algorithm with the LIT algorithm of the IEEE 10 Base T standard to provide a stable and reliable twisted-pair link operation. Also, once the circuit is in its normal operational stage, it will not declare that a link is faulty unless it fails to receive a LIT pulse or an EOF waveform within a time-out period that is in accord with the IEEE standard. Therefore, the circuit is quite insensitive to line noise.
