Effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on aggression of patients with psychosis due to methamphetamine use: A pilot study

Background & objectives: Marriage is the start point in the family formation and it has been approved as the highest social practice to achieve emotional and security needs for adults. Although satisfactory marriage is an important factor in mental health but poor and unsatisfactory marriages can lead to unhappy couples which has negative and irreversible effects on both wives and husbands. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment based on Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) on marital satisfaction among couples who were married. Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest study design was used to conduct this study. The population consisted of all students of Islamic Azad University of Bandar Abbas who were married, during 2015 and 2016. Based on acceptance and commitment therapy protocol a 12-session intervention was conducted over a period of 3 months. Enrich marital satisfaction assessment questionnaire was used to collect data. The subjects responded to questionnaires before intervention and 1 month after intervention. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA using were used for data analysis in SPSS V.20. Results: The results of the analysis showed that the average post-test scores of between two groups in the components of marital satisfaction including sexual satisfaction (experimental, 24.45; control, 19.83), communications (experimental, 22.10; control, 19.81), solving conflict (experimental, 20.35; control, 17.15) and idealistic distortion (experimental, 16.65; control, 14.55) which the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the positive effect of acceptance and commitment therapy on marital satisfaction of the couples, this method is recommended to be used alongside other interventions for improving marital satisfaction of couples.

The Effects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy on the Sense of Coherence, Locus of Control, and Posttraumatic Growth in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis

Background & Objectives: Conflicts occur in marital life. Recently, marital issues have significantly increased in families. In this social unit, women are more vulnerable than men. Emotional divorce can range from simple violence to serious arguments and physical assault. The presence of emotional divorce in marital life aggravates cognitive impairment, decreases satisfaction and quality of married life, and can impair the dynamism, family health, and continuity of marital life. The marital life of individuals seeking divorce is exposed to numerous challenges. These couples encounter several marriage–related complications. Additionally, their severe marital conflicts reduce tolerance in marital relationships and the high rate of emotional divorce; therefore, this condition can be facilitated by marital counseling and the use of effective interventions. The current study aimed to compare the effects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Resilience Training (RT) on emotional divorce in women. Methods: This was a quasi–experimental study with pretest–posttest–follow–up and a control group design. The statistical population of this study included all women seeking a divorce who were referred to Shahid Bahonar Family Court in Tehran City, Iran, in 2018–2019. A sample of 45 women was selected by the voluntary sampling method. The inclusion criteria of the study were having the minimum physical and cognitive ability required to participate in psychological interventions, having a high school certificate, an age range of 25–45 years, and a minimum of one year of marriage history. The exclusion criteria were non–compliance with the group rules (explained in the first session) and absence from >2 sessions. RT program was performed in eleven 12–minute weekly sessions for 3 months. ACT was performed in ten 120–minute weekly sessions for 3 months. All study groups completed the Emotional Divorce Questionnaire (Gottman et al., 1998) in pretest, posttest, and follow– up phases. In the descriptive statistics section, central indicators and dispersion, such as mean and standard deviation were used. In the inferential statistics part, repeated–measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was employed. Bonferroni's posthoc test was used to evaluate the effects of time and Tukey’s posthoc test was applied to compare the study groups. The obtained data were analyzed in SPSS at the significance level of p<0.05. Results: The ANOVA data for intragroup factor (time) was significant concerning emotional divorce (p<0.001). Moreover, the time*group interaction and the intergroup factor were significant respecting emotional divorce (p<0.001). There was a significant difference in emotional divorce scores between pretest, posttest, and follow–up stages (p<0.001). However, there was no significant difference between posttest and follow–up stages (p=0.541). The score of emotional divorce decreased in both experimental groups, compared to the controls (p<0.001). There was also a significant difference between the treatment groups in this respect (p<0.001). Conclusion: Based on the present research findings, ACT and RT significantly reduced emotional divorce scores in women seeking a divorce. However, RT was more effective in reducing emotional divorce, compared to ACT in the explored women.

Comparing the Effects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Resilience Training on Emotional Divorce in Women Referring to Family Courts

Introduction: Acceptance and commitment therapy is one of the third generations of behavioral therapy and instead of trying to change cognitions, person's Psychological relationship with him thoughts and feelings to rise. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of treatment based on acceptance and commitment (ACT) to reduce the couple burnout of married couples. Method: In the form of a quasi-experimental intervention in the form of pre-posttest control group, 20 couples among couples with marital problems that referred to Rastin counseling and psychological services in the spring of 2015 choice with sampling method and were divided into control and experimental groups randomly (each 10 couples). The study’s instrument was Paynz Couple Burnout 1996. The experiment group received therapeutic intervention based on acceptance and commitment therapy for at least twelve weeks of group therapy but for control group treatment was provided. After completed treatment sessions post-test was done from both groups. Data were analyzed by T-difference. Results: Between pre-test (93.60) and post-test scores (78.10) in the experimental group compared with the control group was significantly different (T= -8.32, P<0.01). In other words, intervention based on acceptance and commitment was effective in reducing couple burnout in experiment group. Conclusion: The results show that acceptance and commitment therapy to reduce the couple burnout was effectiveness in married couples. It is recommended that this treatment counselors and family therapists in counseling centers and family education classes in order to solve their marital problems and boost productivity.

The Effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on Reducing Couple Burnout of Couples

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of psychotherapy based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on the subscales of marital satisfaction; overall satisfaction, religious orientation, relations with children, sex, occasional conflicts, interpersonal conflicts and arrogance, by single case study in the spouses of veterans with spinal cord injuries. Method: Participants completed Enrich marital satisfaction questionnaire at baseline (3 to 6 weeks), during six session’s psychotherapy and the two-month follow-up. Results: Analysis method of charting and visual analysis of the results showed that the (ACT) is an effective therapeutic approach to 4 marital satisfaction subscales but second and third participant didn’t show any improvement.. Conclusion: Considering the above, (ACT) is an effective therapeutic approach to overall satisfaction, occasional conflicts, relations with children and interpersonal conflicts.
