An annotated catalogue of world species of Elachistinae (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea: Elachistidae) is presented. The classification follows recent phylogenetic studies. Genera and the species within each genus are listed in alphabetical order. All family, genus and species-group names of Elachistinae published before 28 August 2018 are treated. Sixty-six genus-group names are listed, 60 of which are nomenclaturally available. In the classification followed in this catalogue the species are placed in 10 genera. There are 1016 nomenclaturally available and 106 unavailable species-group names. Of these, 805 names are currently considered to represent valid species. For each species the following data are given: the reference to the original publication and the page; type locality; deposition of the name-bearing types; in the genus Elachista, the taxonomic rank with the subgenus and the informal species group when applicable; distribution; larval host plants; references to essential illustrations, and remarks, when needed. Synonyms are listed under valid names; distribution with geographic area and country records, for Australia, Canada and U.S.A. territories, provinces and states are given; Russia is divided into subregions. Larval host plant records are listed with notes regarding uncertain records. When possible, original references that are considered trustworthy in later literature are given, as well as relevant literature references for illustrations for each species. Synonymies, incorrect subsequent spellings and misspellings are listed under each species with full reference. Alphabetical lists are given for subfamily and infra-generic groupings of species of the genus Elachista, to summarize the placement of each species in its subgenus and species group within the subgenera. 110 valid and one unavailable species-group names originally described to genera currently considered elachistines, but later removed, are listed. When known, their current identity is given. The following taxonomic changes are made: Elachista amseli (Parenti, 1981), a secondary junior homonym of E. amseli Rebel, 1933, is replaced with E. parentii nom. nov.; Hemiprosopa asiatica Sinev, 1998 = Elachista asiatica (Sinev, 1998) stat. nov., comb. nov.; E. bipunctella (Sinev & Sruoga, 1995), a junior secondary homonym of E. bipunctella Treitschke, 1833, is replaced as E. ochropunctosa Kaila, nom. nov.; Elachista cerusella f. juncta Dufrane, 1957 is raised as species-rank name Elachista juncta Dufrane, 1957 stat. nov., a synonym of E. maculicerusella Bruand; Svenssonia corsicana Tautel & Nel, 2010 is transferred to Elachista (Aphelosetia), comb. n.; E. cupreella Blanchard, 1852 is transferred to Perittia, comb. nov.; E. flammeaepennella Costa, 1836 is raised as valid species, stat. rev.; Illantis Meyrick, 1921 is considered a junior subjective synonym of Elachista, syn. nov.; I. picroleuca Meyrick, 1921 is transferred to Elachista, comb. nov.; E. kosteri Traugott-Olsen, 1995 = E. differens Parenti, 1978, syn. nov.; E. oritropha Bradley, 1965 = E. iriphaea (Meyrick, 1932), syn. nov.; Paraperittia Rebel, 1916 = Phaulernis Meyrick, 1895 (Epermeniidae) syn. nov.; P. uniformella Rebel, 1916 = Phaulernis dentella (Zeller, 1839), syn. nov.; and E. zernyi Hartig, 1941 = E. stelviella Amsel, 1932, syn. nov. A lectotype is designated for Paraperittia uniformella Rebel. Elachista macquartella Duponchel, 1840 is considered a nomen oblitum, stat. nov.

An annotated catalogue of Elachistinae of the World (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea: Elachistidae).

We introduce a method to transform wing venation data to a numerical form so that the venation pattern can be analysed and compared regardless of wing size and displacement of the pattern. We use the method for assessing the intraspecific variation and asymmetry within the individual of relative positions of forewing veins in ten species of elachistid moths. Both the intraspecific variation and intra-individual asymmetry were found to be greater than the differences frequently used as systematic characters on various levels within Elachistidae, and to some extent in other Lepidoptera. At least in Elachistidae, major alterations to the current classification will have to be made. Wing characters subject to intraspecific variation should not be used to delimit groups unless they are based on examination of population samples and supported by other characters.

Variation of wing venation in Elachistidae (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea): methodology and implications to systematics

The Elachista regificella complex (Elachistidae) is revised and considered to consist of three closely related species: E. regificella Sircom, presently only recorded from Great Britain, E. geminatella (Herrich-Schaffer), stat. rev. (= E. nieukerkeni Traugott-Olsen, syn. nov.) and E. tengstromi nom. nov. (= E. magnificella Tengstrom, 1848, nec Duponchel, 1843). The latter two species are widely distributed e.g. in Central Europe, the range of E. tengstromi extending to Japan. The species are diagnosed and illustrated. Life history records indicate that the species have, at least to some extent, different host plant preferences: Luzula sylvatica is recorded as the host plant of E. regificella and E. geminatella, of which the latter probably exploits other host plants as well. L. pilosa is the only known host plant of E. tengstromi in Europe, with further host plants recorded in Japan. Neotypes are designated for Elachista regificella Sircom and Poeciloptilia geminatella Herrich-Schaffer.

Antispila treitschkiella (Fischer von Roslerstamm, 1843) and A. petryi Martini, 1899, sp. rev. were regarded as synonymous since 1978, but are shown to be two clearly separated species with different hostplants, life histories, DNA barcodes and morphology. Antispila treitschkiella feeds on Cornus mas L., is bivoltine, and has, by following its ornamentally planted host, greatly expanded its range in north-western Europe. In contrast A. petryi feeds on the widespread native C. sanguinea L., is univoltine, and is one of only two Antispila species previously resident in the British Isles, the Netherlands and northern Europe. Consequently, the increase in abundance of A. treitschkiella in the Netherlands since the early 1990s and in Great Britain in recent years must be regarded as part of a recent expansion into north-western Europe, whereas the native A. petryi is hardly expanding and less abundant. In Britain, detailed surveys of parks and living collections confirmed the monophagy of these two species. A search of British herbarium samples provided no evidence for an earlier date of establishment. Information on recognition of all stages, including DNA barcodes, and distribution is provided, and these two species are compared with the third European Cornus L. leafminer, A. metallella (Denis & Schiffermuller, 1775).

Da Angaben uber ein Freilandauftreten der vorratsschadlichen MottenEphestia elutella, E. cautella, E. kuehniella undPlodia interpunctella in der Literatur recht sparlich und unsicher sind, wurden mit Hilfe der Biotrap®-Lockstoffalen in den Jahren 1982 und 1983 in Berlin (West) und 1984 im Braunschweiger Raum (Niedersachsen) Untersuchungen zum Auftreten der vier Mottenarten auserhalb von Gebauden durchgefuhrt. In beiden Untersuchungsgebieten traten im innerstadtischen Bereich manmliche Falter aller Arten auf (Rangfolge der Fangzahlen in Berlin:P. interpunctella, E. kuehniella, E. elutella, E. cautella; Rangfolge der Fangzahlen in Braunschweig:E. kuehniella, P. interpunctella, E. elutella, E. cautella). Am Stadtrand und in parkartigen Regionen beider Stadte sowie in Braunschweigs dorflichem Umland fehlteE. cautella in den Fallen, weil hochstwahrscheinlich keine oder nur wenige Befallsherde (Nusse und Rohkakao) vorhanden sind, von denen ein Freilandauftreten ausgehen konnte. In speziell bekoderten Fallen (Pheromon+Mandelbruch) und in der Nachbarschaft stark befallener Objekte wurden in geringer Anzahl auch Weibchen gefangen. Alle Untersuchungsergebnisse zeigen, das vorratsschadliche Motten im Freiland vorkommen. Die begrundete Annahme, von ihnen konne ein Neubefall geeigneter Objekte ausgehen, sollte bei der Lagerhaltung berucksichtigt werden, zumal man bislang davon ausging, das ein Befall nur durch Einlagerung infizierter Ware entsteht.

Von 5 Elachistiden (Elachista regificellaSIRCOM, E. gleichenella F., E. quadripunctellaHBN., E. biatomellaSTT. und E. heringiRBL.) werden die Raupen und Minen sowie von den Imagines der Geaderverlauf, die mannlichen und weiblichen Genitalapparate beschrieben und abgebildet. Weiterhin findet man Angaben uber die Verbreitung.

Von 1958–1983 wurden in der Umgebung von Bad Blankenburg (Thur.) (15 km Radius) samtliche Familien der Lepidopteren untersucht. Zu den in den Teilen I–III bearbeiteten Familien (sog. Macrolepidopteren, Pyraloidea, Tortricidae und Cochylidae) konnten weitere 46 Arten festgestellt werden. Von den restlichen Familien (Micropterigidae bis Scythrididae, Pterophoridae und Alucitidae) wurden durch Kescher- und Lichtfang, sowie durch Zuchten e. 1. 752 Arten gefunden. Das ♀ einer neuen Swammerdamia-Art und das bisher unbekannte ♀ von Dichrorampha podoliensis Toll wurden beschrieben. Die Raupen von D. podoliensis Toll wurden in Chrysanthemum corymbosum entdeckt.

The mines, caterpillars, imagos and genitalia of 7 species of Elachistidae (Perittia herrichiellaHERRICH-SCHAFER; Stephensia brunnichellaLINNAEUS; Elachista luticomellaZELLER; E. cerusellaHUBNER; E. pollinariellaZELLER; E. pullicomellaZELLER und Biselachista ornithopodella Frey) are described. The differential structuration of the larval cuticle, and the number of bristles with their anatomical arrangement on the prolegs of segments 6-9 and of the anal segment, are recognized as specific traits.
