The best view selection corresponds to the task of automatically selecting the most representative view of a 3D model. In this paper, we describe a benchmark for evaluation of best view selection algorithms. The benchmark consists of the preferred views of 68 3D models provided by 26 human subjects. The data was collected using a web-based subjective experiment where the users were asked to select the most informative view of a 3D model. We provided a quantitative evaluation measure based on this ground truth data, and compared the performances of seven best view selection algorithms.

A Benchmark for Best View Selection of 3D Objects | NIST

A three-dimensional (3D) skeletonization algorithm extracts the skeleton of a 3D model and provides it for many applications, such as 3D model classification and identification. There are three major skeletonization methodologies used in the literature, distance transform field-based methods, Voronoi diagram-based methods, and thinning-based methods. However, the existing algorithms cannot preserve the connectivity of the skeletons of the 3D mesh models. In this paper, we propose a 3D skeletonization algorithm for 3D mesh models using a partial parallel thinning algorithm and a 3D skeleton correcting algorithm. The proposed algorithm uses pre-defined removing and recovering templates. The partial parallel 3D thinning algorithm separates 62 symmetrical removing templates into two groups based on symmetry. It thins a model with the templates of each group in each thinning procedure. The 3D skeleton correcting algorithm uses six correcting templates to inspect the disconnected voxels in the skeleton and corrects them. The experimental results show several comparisons of skeletons extracted by different skeletonization algorithms. The proposed algorithm can extract the skeleton of each branch of a model and preserve the connectivity.

A 3D Skeletonization Algorithm for 3D Mesh Models Using a Partial Parallel 3D Thinning Algorithm and 3D Skeleton Correcting Algorithm

Since the skeleton represents the topology structure of the query sketch and 2D views of 3D model, this paper proposes a novel sketch-based 3D model retrieval algorithm which utilizes skeleton characteristics as the features to describe the object shape. Firstly, we propose advanced skeleton strength map (ASSM) algorithm to create the skeleton which computes the skeleton strength map by isotropic diffusion on the gradient vector field, selects critical points from the skeleton strength map and connects them by Kruskal's algorithm. Then, we propose histogram feature comparison algorithm which adopts the radii of the disks at skeleton points and the lengths of skeleton branches to extract the histogram feature, and compare the similarity between two skeletons using the histogram feature matrix of skeleton endpoints. Experiment results demonstrate that our approach which combines these two algorithms significantly outperforms several leading sketch-based retrieval approaches.

A novel sketch-based 3D model retrieval approach based on skeleton

In recent years, hand drawn sketch based 3D model retrieval method has become a popular research area due to the rapid growth of available 3D models on the Internet. However, most existing sketch based 3D model retrieval methods only consider using low-level visual features that cannot capture users'search intention. In this paper, we propose a novel sketch-based 3D model retrieval approach by using LDA method to generate topics address these issues. Topics can provide a more descriptive and discriminative meaningful representation rather than low-level feature descriptors, which span the semantic gap between 3D models and hand-drawn sketches. Firstly, we generate 2D views of 3D models in the database. Then we extract low-level features from query sketch and 2D views of 3D models and encode them as visual words. Lastly, we adopt LDA method to achieve topics distribution based on these visual words. So the 3D models which have similar topics as the query sketch can be returned to the user. The experiment results demonstrate that our method can achieve more accurate retrieval results and have a superior performance than other previously proposed methods which merely used low-level feature descriptors.

3D Model Retrieval Based on Hand Drawn Sketches Using LDA Model

At present, there are a lot of researches on 3D model retrieval and sketch is considered to be important for 3D model retrieval. In this paper, we develop a new 3D model retrieval prototype system based on style-sensitive 3D model retrieval method and three-view user sketches. We also implement user-friendly graphic interfaces for the 3D model retrieval system. We explore the performance of the system by conducting a series of 3D model retrieval experiments on the Princeton shape benchmark data set. Experimental results show that the new retrieval system can obtain satisfactory retrieval results. And some results of the new method are superior to some content-based 3D model retrieval methods, in terms of both quantitative search performance metrics and qualitatively measured user search experiences.

This paper proposes a 3D model retrieval system based on three-views hand-drawn sketches. In the system, users can express their desired 3D models by drawing three sketches from front, side and top viewing directions, and the system can automatically returns a set of 3D models whose 2D views are similar to the input sketches. Fourier Descriptors and HOG are integrated as features which are used to measure similarity between query sketches and 2D views generated from 3D models. We also explore contextual similarity among 3D models in the database to improve the performance of our system. The experiment results demonstrate that our approach can successfully retrieval relevant 3D models what users desire to search.
