The starting-point in this themed issue of JEMS on theories of migration and social change is to view migration as a process which is an integral part of broader social transformations, but which also has its own internal dynamics and which shapes social transformation in its own right. Migration is linked in complex ways to class, gender, generation, ethnicity and other social cleavages, which are embodied in hierarchies of power and social status, in positions in home and host communities, and in work and domestic relationships—all of which may be transformed in the course of the migratory process. Taking account of migrants' agency, perceptions and aspirations, the articles in this special issue seek to link micro-level understanding of migration to macro-level trends in development and globalisation, through analysis of the social dynamics of migratory processes. The goal is to develop the means for a systematic explanatory account of migration and its engagement with broader processes of social change.

Theories of migration and social change

This review article considers recent scholarship on the geographies of nationalism by focusing on three key binaries that have defined the field of nationalism studies: inclusive/exclusive (geographies of community), love/hate (geographies of emotion), and past/future (geographies of time). It argues that asking who participates in constructing such conceptual dualisms, geographers can offer important insights about how nationalist discourses underpin contemporary practices of governing ourselves and others as political subjects—and their multifarious spatial dimensions. Geographers are well positioned to investigate the drawing of conceptual boundaries as political acts, with real effects in the world, rather than intellectually “wrong.” As such, this article calls for nationalism scholars not to outright reject binaries, but to take them seriously as a way to open up broader questions about the geographies of nationalism that all subjects of today's state system must confront.

Nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding pain management: Cross‐sectional survey in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia

Abstract Integration refers to socio-economic and cultural incorporation of migrants into a host society, which should adopt measures to encourage their adaptation by taking over its norms and customs. Recently, the ‘local turn’ has entailed studying migration and integration in cities. In this paper, I engage with the Pakistani middle-class migrants’ lives in Dubai. It emerges that they feel integrated in their everyday life by sharing practices and experiences in a multicultural environment. Integration is conceptualized from a bottom-up approach meaning that it moves beyond the state intervention to focus on how people perceive and experience integration in their everyday life.

Le présent article est issu d’une enquête ethnographique exploratoire de plusieurs mois, menée auprès de membres de la diaspora congolaise (RDC) à Nairobi, Kenya. Il vise à rendre compte de la diversité des modalités d’insertion urbaine et sociale de cette diaspora en fonction de critères de génération (temporalités), genre, classe, statuts administratifs, âge etc. Ces « présences congolaises » sont plurielles et participent à la production par le bas de la ville cosmopolite(s) au moyen de pratiques spatiales et sociales qui se différencient en fonction de critères sociologiques. La métropole apparaît dès lors comme un creuset où le côtoiement de différentes populations (migrantes et locales) façonne des formes originales de citadinités cosmopolites.

Globalization and migration have generated acute and often contradictory changes: they have increased social diversity while inducing global homogenization; they have sharpened differentiation of spaces and statuses while accelerating and amplifying communication and circulations; they have induced more complex social stratification while enriching individual and collective identities. These changes happen to be strikingly visible in cities. Urban contexts, indeed, offer privileged sites of inquiry to understanding the social dynamics of globalization, informal belonging and local citizenships, transient and multi-layered identities, symbolic orders and exclusionary practices. But cities are also material sites and they create multisensorial scapes that shape experiences of globalization and social change. They operate through multiple scales, connecting horizontal extensions and vertical layers of the city with generic, landmark, interstitial and neglected places. Far from being mere contexts, cities are both changing and being changed by migration and globalization.

Migration, Urbanity and Cosmopolitanism in a Globalized World: An Introduction

Mass migration to the Gulf cities has produced, over time, de facto cosmopolitan situations. Even though cosmopolitanism is somewhat present in national narratives and official propaganda, foreign residents face exclusionary contexts where policies and practices keep them excluded from the national community. This chapter unpacks the internal tensions characteristic of cosmopolitanism in the exclusionary contexts of the Gulf by comparing cities in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. These tensions operate within migrants’ everyday practices and modes of consumption in urban spaces. We argue that these practices are best understood as a form of segregated cosmopolitanism through which the different migrant communities both acknowledge (and at times consume) urban diversity and maintain certain boundaries. Building upon the analysis of discourses and ethnographic fieldwork in Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Jeddah, this research engages with theories of cosmopolitanism from a situated perspective. It moves away from the classical, normative approach to cosmopolitanism and highlights the fragility of everyday cosmopolitan situations.
