Boron-based multiple-resonance (MR) emitters exhibit the advantages of narrowband emission, high absolute photoluminescence quantum yield, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and sufficient stability during the operation of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Thus, such MR emitters have been widely applied as blue emitters in triplet-triplet-annihilation-driven fluorescent devices used in smartphones and televisions. Moreover, they hold great promise as TADF or terminal emitters in TADF-assisted fluorescence or phosphor-sensitised fluorescent OLEDs. Herein we comprehensively review organoboron-based MR emitters based on their synthetic strategies, clarify structure-photophysical property correlations, and provide design guidelines and future development prospects.

Organoboron-based multiple-resonance emitters: synthesis, structure-property correlations, and prospects.

Multi‐resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR‐TADF) molecules based on boron and nitrogen atoms are emerging as next‐generation blue emitters for organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to their narrow emission spectra and triplet harvesting properties. However, intermolecular aggregation stemming from the planar structure of typical MR‐TADF molecules that leads to concentration quenching and broadened spectra limits the utilization of the full potential of MR‐TADF emitters. Herein, a deep‐blue MR‐TADF emitter, pBP‐DABNA‐Me, is developed to suppress intermolecular interactions effectively. Furthermore, photophysical investigation and theoretical calculations reveal that adding biphenyl moieties to the core body creates dense local triplet states in the vicinity of S1 and T1 energetically, letting the emitter harvest excitons efficiently. OLEDs based on pBP‐DABNA‐Me show a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 23.4% and a pure‐blue emission with a Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate of (0.132, 0.092), which are maintained even at a high doping concentration of 100 wt%. Furthermore, by incorporating a conventional TADF sensitizer, deep‐blue OLEDs with a CIE value of (0.133, 0.109) and an extremely high EQE of 30.1% are realized. These findings provide insight into design strategies for developing efficient deep‐blue MR‐TADF emitters with fast triplet upconversion and suppressed self‐aggregation.

Dense Local Triplet States and Steric Shielding of a Multi‐Resonance TADF Emitter Enable High‐Performance Deep‐Blue OLEDs

Multi‐resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR‐TADF) emitters have drawn considerable attention because of their remarkable optoelectronic properties of high emission efficiency and narrow emission profile, and represent an active subject of cutting‐edge research in the organic electroluminescence (EL). However, the slow reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) rate of MR‐TADF emitter caused by the large energy gap (ΔEST) and small spin‐orbit coupling (SOC) matrix elements between the singlet and triplet excited states limits their further development in organic EL devices. Currently, innovative molecular design strategies have been developed including heavy atom integration, π‐extended MR framework and metal perturbation, and so on to improve the RISC process of MR‐TADF emitters for high‐performance EL devices. Here, an overview is presented on the recent progress of MR‐TADF emitters with fast RISC rate ( > 10−5 s−1), with particular attention to the molecular design, optoelectronic properties, and device performance of organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs), which intends to systematize the knowledge in this subject for the thriving development of highly efficient MR‐TADF emitters. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of MR‐TADF materials are discussed comprehensively.

High‐Performance Multi‐Resonance Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters for Narrowband Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes

Fibers, originating from nature and mastered by human, have woven their way throughout the entire history of human civilization. Recent developments in semiconducting polymer materials have further endowed fibers and textiles with various electronic functions, which are attractive in applications such as information interfacing, personalized medicine, and clean energy. Owing to their ability to be easily integrated into daily life, soft fiber electronics based on semiconducting polymers have gained popularity recently for wearable and implantable applications. Herein, we present a review of the previous and current progress in semiconducting polymer-based fiber electronics, particularly focusing on smart-wearable and implantable areas. First, we provide a brief overview of semiconducting polymers from the viewpoint of materials based on the basic concepts and functionality requirements of different devices. Then we analyze the existing applications and associated devices such as information interfaces, healthcare and medicine, and energy conversion and storage. The working principle and performance of semiconducting polymer-based fiber devices are summarized. Furthermore, we focus on the fabrication techniques of fiber devices. Based on the continuous fabrication of one-dimensional fiber and yarn, we introduce two- and three-dimensional fabric fabricating methods. Finally, we review challenges and relevant perspectives and potential solutions to address the related problems.

Phosphorescent and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been developed to overcome the low efficiency of fluorescent OLEDs. However, device instability, originating from triplet excitons and polarons, limits blue OLED applications. Here, we develop a phosphor-sensitized TADF emission system with TADF emitters to achieve high efficiency and long operational lifetime. Peripheral carbazole moieties are introduced in conventional multi-resonance–type emitters containing one boron atom. The triplet exciton density of the TADF emitter is reduced by facilitating reverse intersystem crossing, and the Förster resonant energy transfer rate from phosphor sensitizer is enhanced by high absorption coefficient of the emitters. The emitter exhibited an operational lifetime of 72.9 hours with Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage chromaticity coordinate y = 0.165, which was 6.6 times longer than those of devices using conventional TADF emitters.
