Operations management (OM) and human resources management (HRM) historically have been very separate fields. In practice, operations managers and human resource managers interact primarily on administrative issues regarding payroll and other matters. In academia, the two subjects are studied by separate communities of scholars publishing in disjoint sets of journals, drawing on mostly separate disciplinary foundations. Yet, operations and human resources are intimately related at a fundamental level. Operations are the context that often explains or moderates the effects of human resource activities such as pay, training, communications, and staffing. Human responses to OM systems often explain variations or anomalies that would otherwise be treated as randomness or error variance in traditional operations research models. In this paper, we probe the interface between operations and human resources by examining how human considerations affect classical OM results and how operational considerations affect classical HRM results. We then propose a unifying framework for identifying new research opportunities at the intersection of the two fields.

Commissioned Paper: On the Interface Between Operations and Human Resources Management

This investigation examined potential performance or motivational differences between self-paced and machine-paced inspection tasks, and measured subject perceptions of inspection tasks. Twenty women served as inspectors in the investigation. Subjects in both self-paced and machine-paced conditions inspected simulated printed circuits varying in circuit complexity. Performance measures of defect detection rate, false alarm rate, and time required for decision were recorded. Self-paced subjects performed better, but both groups suffered performance decrements on the more complex circuits. Both groups found the task basically dull and uninteresting.

An approach to the study of inspection task design has been investigated Twenty female inspectors did a simulated paced visual inspection task for 90 minutes each The experimental variables were display size, product pacing, and fault information as a measure of defect probability They were tested in a 15 point design with 3 replications of the center point The criterion of performance was the fraction of total products correctly identified as being defect free From the experimental data quantitative estimates of performance increments or decrements associated with changes in inspection task variables were determined The implications of observations and their importance in the design of an inspection task have been discussed

Contemporary Approaches to Paced Visual Inspection

Customer needs for high-quality goods and the risk of product-liability litigation against businesses have made companies look for a way to sustain quality assurance in their products and services. Lean manufacturing is the latest and most successful system being used by companies to turn their business around. Visual inspection plays an important role to ensure quality product in manufacturing and service industries. Simulation accompanied by training has been proven to be effective in implementing lean concepts in visual inspection systems by enhancing operator accuracy and reducing search time. This article describes the development and application of a training system in a simulated visual inspection environment using a computer-based program to mimic the actual industrial setting. The system is designed and used to simulate and evaluate lean metrics such as time, accuracy, pacing, and data collection needed to train visual inspectors off-line.

Simulation Design for Off-Line Training of Practical Lean Manufacturing Concepts for Visual Inspection

Research in the area of visual inspection has shown that various factors influence inspection performance. Task factors have been identified as one of the primary classes of factors influencing the complexity of inspection tasks. If inspection task complexity is to be reduced it is essential to understand the influence of various task factors and prescribe interventions based on the impact of these factors. Moreover, historical work in this area has shown that the greater the difficulty of a vigilance task, the more engaged operators may become. Therefore, this research studies the influence of the following task factors: number of defect types, defect standard complexity, defect probability, and defect distribution on both the visual search and decision‐making components of a contact lens inspection task. This study was conducted using a computer simulation of a real world contact lens inspection task using 28 student subjects. Performance was measured on both the visual search and decision‐making components of the task. The results revealed a negative influence of defect standard complexity and a positive influence of defect probability on both the visual search and decision‐making components of the inspection task. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
