An incentive mechanism to promote residential renewable energy consumption in China's electricity retail market: A two-level Stackelberg game approach

Drawing from research on the halo effect and protected values, consumers’ adoption intentions and willingness to pay a premium for renewable energy were explored. Two theoretical models that involve moderated mediation were tested through two-instance repeated-measures linear regressions and non-parametric tests in a behavioral experiment with an Amazon MTurk sample. In line with the expected halo effect, the effects of the renewability of the energy sources on consumers’ adoption intentions and willingness to pay a premium were mediated through consumers’ perceived comfort. These mediation effects were stronger among consumers with high protected values compared to those with low protected values. The results suggest that the positive evaluations of renewable energies by consumers with high protected values are mainly driven by those values. Conversely, consumers with low protected values would have lower adoption intentions, would be less willing to pay more, and they would not feel comfort at home when using renewable energy compared to consumers with high protected values. • Consumers’ adoption intentions and willingness to pay for green energy are studied. • Renewability of energy sources affects consumers’ choices. • Consumers’ perceived comfort mediates the renewability effect showing a halo effect. • Protected values moderate the observed effects. • Data support a moderated mediation in a green energy context.

Developing future retail electricity markets with a customer-centric focus

Retail electricity markets require development to ensure efficient and equitable pass through of wholesale electricity costs to customers. Customer engagement has been heralded as a concept to improve the wholesale-to-retail link, better harness flexible demand loads and co-ordinate distributed renewable generation and storage. This study reviews the state-of-the-art customer engagement trends in retail electricity markets, and in doing so, it first establishes a definition of customer engagement in the context of retail electricity markets. Second, the paper identifies that literature on customer engagement revolves around three key strategic themes, namely ‘Customer Focus’, ‘Tariff Design’ and ‘Innovation’. Third, the paper systematically provides a comprehensive review of these customer engagement strategies in retail electricity markets. Finally, the study identifies the technical, market and social requirements to deliver an innovative retail electricity market structure to decarbonise society. This paper's crucial and novel policy recommendation is that integrating market mechanisms and technology (i.e. cross-linking across the three customer engagement strategy themes) is required to ensure robust and efficient retail electricity market operation as society advances to a net zero economy. The study concludes with the establishment of eight future research directions of customer engagement for retail electricity market design.
