Bolide impact and flood volcanism compete as leading candidates for the cause of terminal-Cretaceous mass extinctions. High-precision (40)Ar/(39)Ar data indicate that these two mechanisms may be genetically related, and neither can be considered in isolation. The existing Deccan Traps magmatic system underwent a state shift approximately coincident with the Chicxulub impact and the terminal-Cretaceous mass extinctions, after which ~70% of the Traps' total volume was extruded in more massive and more episodic eruptions. Initiation of this new regime occurred within ~50,000 years of the impact, which is consistent with transient effects of impact-induced seismic energy. Postextinction recovery of marine ecosystems was probably suppressed until after the accelerated volcanism waned.

Our field studies emphasizing brittle shear P- and Y-planes along the margins of the Barmer basin (Rajasthan, India) support its two-phase (NW-SE, followed by NE-SW) extension during Early Cretaceous and Late Cretaceous–Paleocene periods. We also document nearly NE-trending megascale transfer zones along the northern margin of the Barmer basin. Preexisting brittle planes in the Malani basement rocks guided the relay structures here. Structures at the western basin shoulder margin indicate NE-SW extension, and the crosscut relation connotes the relative timing of the two extension phases. The crosscutting conjugate fault sets are non-Andersonian. The NW-trending faults produced by the second-phase extension and the inherited NNW-trending brittle features are dominantly dip-slip. Deccan volcanism in Rajasthan: 40Ar–39Ar geochronology and geochemistry of the Tavidar volcanic suite

The Sindreth Group exposed near Sirohi in southern Rajasthan, western India, is a volcanosedimentary sequence. Zircons from Sindreth rhyolite lavas and tuffs have yielded U–Pb crystallization ages of ~768–761 Ma, suggesting that the Sindreth Group is a part of the Malani magmatic event. Earlier 40Ar–39Ar studies of other Malani volcanic and plutonic rocks yielded disturbed argon release spectra, ascribed to a ~550 Ma thermal event possibly related to the Pan-African orogeny. To test and confirm this possibility, we dated two whole-rock and three feldspar separate samples of the Sindreth volcanics by the 40Ar–39Ar method. All samples yield disturbed argon release spectra suggesting radiogenic argon loss and with plateau segments at 550 Ma or 490 Ma. We interpret these as events of argon loss at 550–490 Ma related to an Ediacaran–Cambrian thermal event, possibly related to the Malagasy orogeny. The combined older and new 40Ar–39Ar results are significant in showing that whereas Ediacaran–Cambrian magmatic and metamorphic events are well known from many parts of India, they left thermal imprints in much of Trans-Aravalli Rajasthan as well. The overall evidence is consistent with a model of multiphase assembly of Gondwanaland from separate continental landmasses.
