A novel modified expanded graphite/epoxy 3D composite with ultrahigh thermal conductivity

Over last few years, polyurethane (PU) has been applied in a number of areas because of its remarkable features, such as excellent mechanical strength, good abrasion resistance, toughness, low temperature flexibility, etc. More specifically, PU can be easily “tailor made” to meet specific demands. This structure–property relationship endows great potential for use in wider applications. With the improvement of living standards, ordinary polyurethane products cannot meet people’s growing needs for comfort, quality, and novelty. This has recently drawn enormous commercial and academic attention to the development of functional polyurethane. Among the major applications, PU is one of the prominent retanning agents and coating materials in leather manufacturing. This review gives a summary of academic study in the field of functional PU as well as its recent application in leather manufacture.

Recent Advances in Functional Polyurethane and Its Application in Leather Manufacture: A Review.

Nowadays, the increasing demands from consumer challenges the traditional leather products. Traditional polymer leather finishes gradually lose their dominant position in the market. To address this issue, recent research effort has been devoted to developing polymer-based organic-inorganic nanocomposite leather finishes due to their various functional properties including antibacterial, self-cleaning and water-resistant property. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of synthesis of polymer-based organic-inorganic nanocomposites and their application as functional leather finishes. With the perspective of their properties and current challenges, an outlook in the future development about crafting functional and high-quality leather finishes are further proposed.

Insights into functional polymer-based organic-inorganic nanocomposites as leather finishes

This article reviews stimuli-responsive and biostable polyurethanes (PUs) and discusses biomedical applications of smart PUs with a particular focus on long-term implantable PU biomaterials such as PU generated artificial blood vessels, artificial intervertebral discs (IVDs), and intravaginal rings (IVRs). Recently, smart PUs have been actively researched to enhance bioactivity, biocompatibility, and reduce drug side effects. Although biodegradability is important in regenerative medicine, biostability of PU plays a key role for long-term implantable biomaterials. This article reviews recent publications of research and inventions of stimuli-responsive and biostable PUs. Applications of smart PUs in long-term implantable biomaterials are discussed and linked to the future outlook of smart biostable PU biomaterials.

Smart and Biostable Polyurethanes for Long-Term Implants

Aerogels are predominantly mesoporous, extremely lightweight, low density (∼ 0.003 g/cm3) and thermally insulating materials. Over the years, aerogels have gained increasing attention due to their extraordinary properties (light, heat, sound, electricity and force) and application potentials in varieties of fields. Several studies have been carried out regarding aerogel preparation and its applications in coatings on different substrates. In this review, an overview of aerogels preparation and their application progress in coatings of most common substrates is presented. Attention is paid to aerogel coatings of textiles, leather, and substrates other than leather and textiles for special functionalities that could address the application progress in coatings. This review will help to inspire scientists and engineers towards novel aerogel materials and technologies to boost the industrial fabrication of flexible advanced materials.

Preparation of aerogel and its application progress in coatings: a mini overview

Sulfanilamide-conjugated polyurethane coating with enzymatically-switchable antimicrobial capability for leather finishing

The present paper aims to investigate the process parameters and damping behaviour of the acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) cantilever beam manufactured using material extrusion (MEX). The research outcome could guide the manufacture of MEX structures to suit specific operating scenarios such as energy absorption and artificially controlled vibration responses. Our research used an experimental approach to examine the interdependencies between process parameters (nozzle size, infill density and pattern) and the damping behaviour (first-order modal damping ratio and loss factor). The impact test was carried out to obtain the damping ratio from the accelerometer. A dynamic mechanical analysis was performed for the loss factor measurement. The paper used statistical analysis to reveal significant dependencies between the process parameters and the damping behaviour. The regression models were also utilised to evaluate the mentioned statistical findings. The multiple third-order polynomials were developed to represent the relation between process parameters and modal damping ratio using stiffness as the mediation variable. The obtained results showed that the infill density affected the damping behaviour significantly. Higher infill density yielded a lower damping ratio. Nozzle size also showed a notable effect on damping. A high damping ratio was observed at a significantly low value of nozzle size. The results were confirmed using the theoretical analysis based on the underlying causes due to porosity in the MEX structure.

Effect of 3D Printing Process Parameters on Damping Characteristic of Cantilever Beams Fabricated Using Material Extrusion

Abstract The efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is still limited by the inefficient utilisation of generated ROS in tumours due to cellular redox homeostasis. To improve the therapeutic efficacy for oral carcinoma, biomimetic cell membrane-coated mesoporous nanoplatform was tailored to interfere with cellular redox homeostasis for amplified PDT. In this study, CAL-27 cancer cell membrane (CM) was encapsulated onto the mesoporous silica NPs (MSN), which were preloaded with Chlorin e6 (Ce6) and Curcumin (Cur). The biomimetic nanoparticles displayed a size of around 120 nm, which had excellent cytotoxicity under a laser and increased uptake ability to tumour cell. After internalised by cancer cells, the released Cur could effectively disturb ROS-defence system by suppressing TrxR activity, and decreasing TrxR-2 expression (p < 0.05), leading to enhanced cancer cell killing ability of PDT. The biomimetic system was found to selectively accumulate in the tumour due to its homologous targeting capability and inhibit tumour growth significantly. In a word, the biomimetic nanoplatform apparently enhanced the therapeutic effect of PDT on tumours by Cur disturbing the ROS-defence system, which exhibited a new way to enhance PDT.
