People discover various materials from time to time that break the boundaries of traditional materials. Plastic is a revolutionized material, and is referred to as “a material with 1,000 uses”. This review summarized up-to-date research on plastic and its waste pollution. Plastic has a domain throughout human life with its versatile properties such as lightweight, high durability, flexibility, and low production cost. This article describes the applications, benefits, production, consumption, and classifications of plastics. Plastic commercialization began with the Second World War and grew all over the world within less than a century. The global annual production of plastic is more than 359 million tons. Despite all the benefits, plastics cause severe environmental and public health issues. Accordingly, this study addresses the major issues of plastic waste on the environment and human health. Plastics can degrade into micro to nano sizes, and those fine particles are more spreadable in air, water, and soil. Therefore, both terrestrial and aquatic animals go through various negative impacts such as ingestion, entangling, ulcers, low reproduction, and oxidative stress. Microplastics also degrade human health due to cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, birth defects, cancer, etc. The closing contains the developed end-of-life options (e.g., recycling and reprocessing, incineration with energy recovery, modification reuse, value addition, and landfilling) of biodegradable and non-biodegradable plastic wastes. Several international, regional/national level legislations and policies/concepts (e.g., plastic trade, 3R policy, and circular economy) are available to manage plastic and plastic waste generation. Plastic waste management is also discussed offering practical insights and real-world scenarios. Solutions and challenges in effective plastic waste management guide to create a more sustainable and environmentally responsible approach. Finally, this review article highlights the importance of judicious decisions and the involvement of all stakeholders to overcome the plastic waste crisis. 

The world of plastic waste: a review

Globally recognized as emergent contaminants, microplastics (MPs) are prevalent in aquaculture habitats and subject to intense management. Aquaculture systems are at risk of microplastic contamination due to various channels, which worsens the worldwide microplastic pollution problem. Organic contaminants in the environment can be absorbed by and interact with microplastic, increasing their toxicity and making treatment more challenging. There are two primary sources of microplastics: (1) the direct release of primary microplastics and (2) the fragmentation of plastic materials resulting in secondary microplastics. Freshwater, atmospheric and marine environments are also responsible for the successful migration of microplastics. Until now, microplastic pollution and its effects on aquaculture habitats remain insufficient. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the impact of microplastics on aquatic ecosystems. It highlights the sources and distribution of microplastics, their physical and chemical properties, and the potential ecological consequences they pose to marine and freshwater environments. The paper also examines the current scientific knowledge on the mechanisms by which microplastics affect aquatic organisms and ecosystems. By synthesizing existing research, this review underscores the urgent need for effective mitigation strategies and further investigation to safeguard the health and sustainability of aquatic ecosystems.

The impact of microplastics on bivalve mollusks: A bibliometric and scientific review.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), defined as plastic particles smaller than 5 mm and 100 nm, respectively, have emerged as significantly hazardous contaminants in global environments. These particles originate from various sources, including industrial products, consumer goods, and the degradation of larger plastic debris. Micro (nano)plastics (MNPs) have become ubiquitous contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, raising concerns about their uptake and distribution within aquatic biota and their potential ecological impacts. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the transfer and hazards of MNPs in aquatic environments, with a focus on their toxicity to aquatic organisms, including size-dependent effects, tissue distribution within organisms, and trophic transfer along the food chain. Once ingested, MNPs can distribute within the organs and tissues, such as gastrointestinal tract, gills, liver, among others. Moreover, the ingestion of MNPs by primary consumers can lead to their transfer along the food chain, potentially causing bioaccumulation and biomagnification. The presence of MNPs poses significant risks to aquatic organisms, affecting their survival, growth, reproduction, and behavior. The size of particles plays a crucial role, with smaller particles often exhibiting more pronounced toxic effects. Understanding these aspects is essential for addressing the ecological consequences of plastic pollution and developing effective mitigation strategies. 

Biological uptake, distribution and toxicity of micro(nano)plastics in the aquatic biota: A special emphasis on size-dependent impacts

With the intensification of microplastic pollution globally, aquaculture environments also face risks of microplastic contamination through various pathways such as plastic fishing gear. Compared to wild aquatic products, cultured aquatic products are more susceptible to microplastic exposure through fishing tackle, thus assessing the impacts of microplastics on farmed species and human health. However, current research on microplastic pollution and its ecological effects in aquaculture environments still remains insufficient. This article comprehensively summarizes the pollution characteristics and interrelationships of microplastics in aquaculture environments. We analyzed the influence of microplastics on the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry. Then, the potential hazards of microplastics on pond ecosystems and consumer health were elucidated. The strategies for removing microplastics in aquaculture environments are also discussed. Finally, an outlook on the current challenge and the promising opportunities in this area was proposed. This review aims to evaluate the value of assessing microplastic pollution in aquaculture environments and provide guidance for the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry.

It is impossible to overlook the effects of microplastics on aquatic life as they continuously accumulate in aquatic environments. Aquatic crustaceans, as both predator and prey, play an important role in the food web and energy transmission. It is of great practical significance to pay attention to the toxic effects of microplastics on aquatic crustaceans. This review finds that most studies have shown that microplastics negatively affect the life history, behaviors and physiological functions of aquatic crustaceans under experimental conditions. The effects of microplastics of different sizes, shapes or types on aquatic crustaceans are different. Generally, smaller microplastics have more negative effects on aquatic crustaceans. Irregular microplastics have more negative effects on aquatic crustaceans than regular microplastics. When microplastics co-exist with other contaminants, they have a greater negative impact on aquatic crustaceans than single contaminants. This review contributes to rapidly understanding the effects of microplastics on aquatic crustaceans, providing a basic framework for the ecological threat of microplastics to aquatic crustaceans.

Progress on the Effects of Microplastics on Aquatic Crustaceans: A Review

Autophagy functions in plant host immunity responses to pathogen infection. The molecular mechanisms and functions used by the citrus Huanglongbing (HLB)-associated intracellular bacterium 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (CLas) to manipulate autophagy are unknown. We identified a CLas effector, SDE4405 (CLIBASIA_04405), which contributes to HLB progression. Transgenic SDE4405 in Wanjincheng orange (Citrus sinensis) promotes CLas proliferation and symptom expression via suppressing host immunity response. SDE4405 interacts with ATG8-family proteins (ATG8s) and their interactions activate autophagy in Nicotiana benthamiana. The occurrence of autophagy is also significantly enhanced in SDE4405-transgenic citrus plants. Interrupting NbATG8s-SDE4405 interaction by silencing NbATG8s reduces Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato strain DC3000ΔhopQ1-1 (Pst DC3000ΔhopQ1-1) proliferation in N. benthamiana, and transient overexpression of CsATG8c and SDE4405 in citrus promotes Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc) multiplication, suggesting SDE4405-ATG8s interaction negatively regulates plant defense. These data show the role of the CLas effector protein in manipulating autophagy and provide new insights into the molecular interaction between CLas and citrus.

As the most widely used polybrominated diphenyl ether, BDE-209 is commonly used in polymer-based commercial and household products. Due to its unique physicochemical properties, BDE-209 is ubiquitous in a variety of environmental compartments and can be exposed to organisms in various ways and cause toxic effects. The present review outlines the current state of knowledge on the occurrence of BDE-209 in the environment, influencing factors, toxicity, and degradation. BDE-209 has been detected in various environmental matrices including air, soil, water, and sediment. Additionally, environmental factors such as organic matter, total suspended particulate, hydrodynamic, wind, and temperature affecting BDE-209 are specifically discussed. Toxicity studies suggest BDE-209 may cause systemic toxic effects on living organisms, reproductive toxicity, embryo-fetal toxicity, genetic toxicity, endocrine toxicity, neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and developmental toxicity, or even be carcinogenic. BDE-209 has toxic effects on organisms mainly through epigenetic regulation and induction of oxidative stress. Evidence regarding the degradation of BDE-209, including biodegradation, photodegradation, Fenton degradation, zero-valent iron degradation, chemical oxidative degradation, and microwave radiation degradation is summarized. This review may contribute to assessing the environmental risks of BDE-209 to help develop rational management plans. 

A critical review on BDE-209: Source, distribution, influencing factors, toxicity, and degradation.

Understanding the behavior and potential toxicity of copper nanoparticles (nano-Cu) in the aquatic environment is a primary way to assess their environmental risks. In this study, RNA-seq was performed on three different tissues (gills, intestines, and muscles) of zebrafish exposed to nano-Cu, to explore the potential toxic mechanism of nano-Cu on zebrafish. The results indicated that the toxic mechanism of nano-Cu on zebrafish was tissue-specific. Nano-Cu enables the CB1 receptor of the presynaptic membrane of gill cells to affect short-term synaptic plasticity or long-term synaptic changes (ECB-LTD) through DSI and DSE, causing dysfunction of intercellular signal transmission. Imbalance of de novo synthesis of UMP in intestinal cells and its transformation to UDP, UTP, uridine, and uracil, resulted in many functions involved in the pyrimidine metabolic pathway being blocked. Meanwhile, the toxicity of nano-Cu caused abnormal expression of RAD51 gene in muscle cells, which affects the repair of damaged DNA through Fanconi anemia and homologous recombination pathway, thus causing cell cycle disorder. These results provide insights for us to better understand the differences in toxicity of nano-Cu on zebrafish tissues and are helpful for a comprehensive assessment of nano-Cu's effects on aquatic organisms.
