Advances in liquid-solid triboelectric nanogenerators and its applications

Abstract Hydrogen energy is an alternative to carbon‐based fuels due to its zero pollution and high energy density. The electrolysis of water, driven by triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), is considered as a promising green method for hydrogen production. 2D transition metal carbides/nitrides can be used as catalyst carriers, through interface engineering to prepare molybdenum disulfide/titanium dioxide (MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 ) composites for accelerating the kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, a multilayered rotating TENG (MR‐TENG) is designed to convert rotating mechanical energy into electrical energy for constructing a self‐powered hydrogen production system. MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 composites are utilized as electrodes for electrolyzing water, which can enhance the catalytic activity in the HER. The output performance of the MR‐TENG and its managed charging performance when integrating with a constant voltage power management module are investigated. Besides the application demonstrations of powering a digital thermometer, an anemometer, and a commercial incandescent lamp, the power‐managed MR‐TENG is applied to generate electricity for water electrolysis, and realize a hydrogen evolution rate of 7.1 mL min −1 at the rotation speed of 90 rpm. This work provides an effective approach to the self‐powered production of high‐purity green hydrogen based on renewable blue energy utilization with important industrial application prospects. 

Triboelectric Nanogenerators Powered Hydrogen Production System Using MoS2/Ti3C2 as Catalysts

Abstract Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is an emerging wave energy harvesting technology with excellent potential. However, due to issues with sealing, anchoring, and difficult deployment over large areas, TENG still cannot achieve large‐scale wave energy capture. Here, a submerged and completely open solid–liquid TENG (SOSL‐TENG) is developed for ocean wave energy harvesting. The SOSL‐TENG is adapted to various water environments. Due to its simple structure, it is easy to deploy into various marine engineering facilities in service. Importantly, this not only solves the problem of difficult construction of TENG networks at present, but also effectively utilizes high‐quality wave energy resources. The working mechanism and output performance of the SOSL‐TENG are systematically investigated. With optimal triggering conditions, the transferred charge ( Q tr ) and short‐circuit current ( I sc ) of SOSL‐TENG are 2.58 μC and 85.9 μA, respectively. The wave tank experiment is taken for fully demonstrating the superiority of the SOSL‐TENG network in large‐scale collection and conversion of wave energy. Due to the excellent output performance, TENG can harvest wave energy to provide power for various commercial electronic devices such as LED beads, hygrothermograph, and warning lights. Importantly, the SOSL‐TENG networks realizes self‐powered for electrochemical systems, which provides a direction for energy cleanliness in industrial systems. This work provides a prospective strategy for large‐scale deployment of TENG applications, especially for harvesting wave energy in spray splash zones or at the surface of the water. image 

Submerged and completely open solid–liquid triboelectric nanogenerator for water wave energy harvesting

How to optimize ion-exchange membrane materials has been the key for researchers recently working on the use of reverse electrodialysis to harvest osmotic energy. Based on the considerations of improving membrane performance and conversion to large-area industrial production, this work first proposes an easy-industrialized strategy to treat bacterial cellulose membranes by hot pressing and hot pressing with etherification modification, and then to obtain anion-selective and cation-selective membrane pairs (PBC-M and NBC-M) with opposite charges. The PBC-M obtained by multi-step treatment has excellent hydrophobicity, good surface charge density, and more favorable nanochannel size for the functioning of double layer. The maximum output power density of 44.1 mW m−2 was obtained in artificial river water and seawater simulated salinity gradient power generation. Applied to a larger test area, the power output of the system where a single membrane is located can reach 2.2 × 10−3 mW, which is ahead of similar experimental products. The two membranes prepared can also be used in combination, which provides a new idea for full cell design. It's important to open up a new route for optimizing nanofluidic channel design, regulating ion flux transport, and advancing the large-scale industrialization of biomass nanofluidic membrane RED system.
