Multi-objective optimization for pavement maintenance and rehabilitation decision-making: A critical review and future directions

The aim of this paper is to present a new decision support concept (DSC) related to the ever-growing problem of the maintenance of damaged asphalt pavements. In the process of defining a sustainable approach to resolving this problem, we found complexity in the different needs considering economic, social, and technical aspects. An additional contribution to the problem’s complexity was the many road sections that need to be ranked based on their need for maintenance. The priority ranking was based on the multicriteria Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment of Evaluations (PROMETHEE) method and the Analytic Hierarchy Processing (AHP) method. The DSC implementation contained the inclusion of relevant stakeholders and the definition of goals through identification of several different criteria and their weights. This approach to criteria determination provided a final ranking list of spatial units for maintenance, satisfying the needs of all stakeholders. The DSC presented in this paper was tested in the city of Split for the most important roads needing maintenance of asphalt pavements.

A Sustainable Approach for the Maintenance of Asphalt Pavement Construction

Pain, the primary symptom of osteoarthritis (OA), reduces both the quality and quantity of life for patients. The pathophysiology of OA pain is complex and often difficult to explain solely by radiological structural changes. One reason for this discrepancy is pain sensitization (peripheral sensitization [PS] and central sensitization [CS]) in OA. Thus, an understanding of pain sensitization is important when considering treatment strategies and development for OA pain. In recent years, pro-inflammatory cytokines, nerve growth factors (NGFs), and serotonin have been identified as causative agents that induce peripheral and central sensitization and are becoming therapeutic targets for OA pain. However, the characteristics of the clinical manifestations of pain sensitization elicited by these molecules remain unclear, and it is not well understood who among OA patients should receive the therapeutic intervention. Thus, this review summarizes evidence on the pathophysiology of peripheral and central sensitization in OA pain and the clinical features and treatment options for this condition. While the majority of the literature supports the existence of pain sensitization in chronic OA pain, clinical identification and treatment of pain sensitization in OA are still in their infancy, and future studies with good methodological quality are needed.

Mechanisms of Peripheral and Central Sensitization in Osteoarthritis Pain

The latest developments in the field of road asphalt materials and pavement construction/maintenance technologies, as well as the spread of life-cycle-based sustainability assessment techniques, have posed issues in the continuous and efficient management of data and relative decision-making process for the selection of appropriate road pavement design and maintenance solutions; Infrastructure Building Information Modeling (IBIM) tools may help in facing such challenges due to their data management and analysis capabilities. The present work aims to develop a road pavement life cycle sustainability assessment framework and integrate such a framework into the IBIM of a road pavement project through visual scripting to automatically provide the informatization of an appropriate pavement information model and evaluate sustainability criteria already in the design stage through life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis methods. The application of the proposed BIM-based tool to a real case study allowed us (a) to draw considerations about the long-term environmental and economic sustainability of alternative road construction materials and (b) to draft a maintenance plan for a specific road section that represents the best compromise solution among the analyzed ones. The IBIM tool represents a practical and dynamic way to integrate environmental considerations into road pavement design, encouraging the use of digital tools in the road industry and ultimately supporting a pavement maintenance decision-making process oriented toward a circular economy.

Leveraging Infrastructure BIM for Life-Cycle-Based Sustainable Road Pavement Management

Multi-objective decision support system for large-scale network pavement maintenance and rehabilitation management to enhance sustainability

Background Macrophages significantly contributes to symptomology and structural progression of osteoarthritis (OA) and raise increasing attention in the relative research field. Recent studies have shown that tremendous progress has been made in the research of macrophages associated with osteoarthritis. However, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis is lacking in this research field. This study aimed to introduce the research status as well as hotspots and explore the field of macrophages research in OA from a bibliometric perspective. Methods This study collected 1481 records of macrophages associated with osteoarthritis from 1991 to 2021 in the web of science core collection (WoSCC) database. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and R package “bibliometrix” software were used to analyze regions, institutions, journals, authors, and keywords to predict the latest trends in macrophages associated with osteoarthritis research. Results The number of publications related to macrophages associated with osteoarthritis is increasing annually. China and the USA, contributing more than 44% of publications, were the main drivers for research in this field. League of European Research Universities was the most active institution and contributed the most publications. Arthritis and Rheumatism is the most popular journal in this field with the largest publications, while Osteoarthritis and Cartilage is the most co-cited journal. Koch AE was the most prolific writer, while Bondeson J was the most commonly co-cited author. “Rheumatology”, “Orthopedics”, and “Immunology” were the most widely well-represented research areas of OA associated macrophages. “Rheumatoid arthritis research”, “clinical symptoms”, “regeneration research”, “mechanism research”, “pathological features”, and “surgery research” are the primary keywords clusters in this field. Conclusion This is the first bibliometric study comprehensively mapped out the knowledge structure and development trends in the research field of macrophages associated with osteoarthritis in recent 30 years. The results comprehensively summarize and identify the research frontiers which will provide a reference for scholars studying macrophages associated with osteoarthritis.

Bibliometric and visualization analysis of macrophages associated with osteoarthritis from 1991 to 2021

The Ministry of Transportation of the People’s Republic of China (CMOT) targets at “establishing the transportation system with the characteristic of low carbon in China” during “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” (2010-2015). With that target, emerging technologies of pavement recycling, asphalt rubber (AR) and warm mix asphalt (WMA) are widely used now in China for the construction and maintenance of asphalt pavement. In this research, the framework and the evaluation system of energy conservation and emission reduction for asphalt pavement were developed based on life cycle assessment (LCA). Through investigation, the life cycle inventory (LCI), mainly consisting of energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission during construction of hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavement as well as pavement recycling, AR and WMA pavement were obtained. In order to check out the data quality, the uncertainty analysis of obtained results was carried out. The environmental efficiency of emerging asphalt pavement technologies was compared. Meanwhile, to promote the widespread use of the research fruits, the software of Energy and Emission Evaluation System (EEES) was developed on the basis of the established LCI data. The results show that, among the processes of conventional HMA pavement construction, the mixing process consumes the most energy, while the processes of paving and compaction consume much less. Based on the life cycle assessment, the pavement cold recycling, hot in-place recycling and AR technologies have significant benefits of energy conservation and emission reduction. Furthermore not all types of WMA technologies have the environmental benefits. The chemistry agent and mechanical foaming WMA technologies have significant benefits while the Zeolite technology even consumes more energy than HMA.

Incorporating Life Cycle Science into Asphalt Pavement Maintenance Decision Making

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is a popular manufacturing technique with versatile potential for materials processing in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In particular, the repair and regeneration of significant bone defects remain as substantial clinical challenges that require biomaterial implants to maintain mechanical strength and porosity, which may be realized using 3DP. The rapid progress in 3DP development in the past decade warrants a bibliometric analysis to gain insights into its applications in bone tissue engineering (BTE). Here, we performed a comparative study using bibliometric methods for 3DP in bone repair and regeneration. A total of 2,025 articles were included, and the results showed an increase in the number of publications and relative research interest on 3DP annually worldwide. China was the leader in international cooperation in this field and also the largest contributor to the number of citations. The majority of articles in this field were published in the journal Biofabrication. Chen Y was the author who made the highest contribution to the included studies. The keywords included in the publications were mainly related to BTE and regenerative medicine (including “3DP techniques,” “3DP materials,” “bone regeneration strategies,” and “bone disease therapeutics”) for bone regeneration and repair. This bibliometric and visualized analysis provides significant insights into the historical development of 3DP in BTE from 2012 to 2022, which will be beneficial for scientists to conduct further investigations into this dynamic field.
