A novel remote sensing ecological vulnerability index on large scale: A case study of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor region

The spatiotemporal evolution of vegetation and its influencing factors can be used to explore the relationships among vegetation, climate change, and human activities, which are of great importance for guiding scientific management of regional ecological environments. In recent years, remote sensing technology has been widely used in dynamic monitoring of vegetation. In this study, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and standardized precipitation–evapotranspiration index (SPEI) from 1998 to 2017 were used to study the spatiotemporal variation of NDVI in China. The influences of climate change and human activities on NDVI variation were investigated based on the Mann–Kendall test, correlation analysis, and other methods. The results show that the growth rate of NDVI in China was 0.003 year−1. Regions with improved and degraded vegetation accounted for 71.02% and 22.97% of the national territorial area, respectively. The SPEI decreased in 60.08% of the area and exhibited an insignificant drought trend overall. Human activities affected the vegetation cover in the directions of both destruction and restoration. As the elevation and slope increased, the correlation between NDVI and SPEI gradually increased, whereas the impact of human activities on vegetation decreased. Further studies should focus on vegetation changes in the Continental Basin, Southwest Rivers, and Liaohe River Basin.

Influences of Climate Change and Human Activities on NDVI Changes in China

Attribution of climate change and human activities to vegetation NDVI in Jilin Province, China during 1998–2020

With the impact of climate change and the implementation of the “Grain-for-Green” ecological restoration project, the dynamics of water and heat transport and storage in the Loess Plateau (LP) have changed substantially. However, studies on the vulnerability of the LP ecosystem in response to ecological restoration are less concerned. Based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the gross primary production (GPP), this study assessed the spatial change of ecological vulnerability (EV) in the LP during 2001–2019. Results showed that (1) the annual mean NDVI and GPP was high in the southeast of LP and low in the northwest. The trend of NDVI and GPP presented a significant upward trend over approximately 85% of the regions; (2) the ecological vulnerability of LP displayed a low-to-high gradient from southeast to the northwest. Medium (0.3–0.45) and heavy (≥0.45) vulnerability levels occurred in the northwest of LP, which was attributed to less vegetation and serious land degradation; (3) forestland has the lowest vulnerability whereas grassland, sparse vegetation and urban land exhibited higher vulnerability, with the respective percentages of vulnerable areas of 63.8%, 90.4%, 70% in terms of NDVI and 87.1%, 49.8%, 38.4% in terms of GPP; and (4) the EV of LP was impacted by climate and terrain. The magnitude of vulnerability was negatively correlated with precipitation, temperature and slope, and positively correlated with drought. It is suggested that precipitation, slope and drought stress were the dominant factors of EV. The findings provide guidance for appropriate planning of ecological restoration in the LP. • Achieving a rapid assessment of ecological vulnerability in terms of NDVI and GPP. • Ecological vulnerability showed an increasing trend from southeast to northwest in the LP. • Climate and topography had noticeable effects on ecological vulnerability. • Providing guidance for appropriate planning of ecological restoration on the LP.

Vulnerability assessment and its driving forces in terms of NDVI and GPP over the Loess Plateau, China

Thanks to the emergence of cloud-computing platforms and the ability of machine learning methods to solve prediction problems efficiently, this work presents a workflow to automate spatiotemporal mapping of essential vegetation traits from Sentinel-3 (S3) imagery. The traits included leaf chlorophyll content (LCC), leaf area index (LAI), fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), and fractional vegetation cover (FVC), being fundamental for assessing photosynthetic activity on Earth. The workflow involved Gaussian process regression (GPR) algorithms trained on top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance simulations generated by the coupled canopy radiative transfer model (RTM) SCOPE and the atmospheric RTM 6SV. The retrieval models, named to S3-TOA-GPR-1.0, were directly implemented in Google Earth Engine (GEE) to enable the quantification of the traits from TOA data as acquired from the S3 Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) sensor.Following good to high theoretical validation results with normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) ranging from 5% (FAPAR) to 19% (LAI), a three fold evaluation approach over diverse sites and land cover types was pursued: (1) temporal comparison against LAI and FAPAR products obtained from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) for the time window 2016-2020, (2) spatial difference mapping with Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS) estimates, and (3) direct validation using interpolated in situ data from the VALERI network. For all three approaches, promising results were achieved. Selected sites demonstrated coherent seasonal patterns compared to LAI and FAPAR MODIS products, with differences between spatially averaged temporal patterns of only 6.59%. In respect of the spatial mapping comparison, estimates provided by the S3-TOA-GPR-1.0 models indicated highest consistency with FVC and FAPAR CGLS products. Moreover, the direct validation of our S3-TOA-GPR-1.0 models against VALERI estimates indicated with regard to jurisdictional claims in good retrieval performance for LAI, FAPAR and FVC. We conclude that our retrieval workflow of spatiotemporal S3 TOA data processing into GEE opens the path towards global monitoring of fundamental vegetation traits, accessible to the whole research community.

Quantifying Fundamental Vegetation Traits over Europe Using the Sentinel-3 OLCI Catalogue in Google Earth Engine

Identifying ecologically vulnerable areas and understanding the responses of phenology to negative changes in vegetation growth are important bases for ecological restoration. However, identifying ecologically vulnerable areas is difficult because it requires high spatial resolution and dense temporal resolution data over a long time period. In this study, a novel method is presented to identify ecologically vulnerable areas based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series from MOD09A1. Here, ecologically vulnerable areas are defined as those that experienced negative changes frequently and greatly in vegetation growth after the disturbances during 2000–2018. The number and magnitude of negative changes detected by the Breaks for Additive Season and Trend (BFAST) algorithm based on the NDVI time-series data were combined to identify ecologically vulnerable areas. TIMESAT was then used to extract the phenology metrics from an NDVI time series dataset to characterize the vegetation responses due to the abrupt negative changes detected by the BFAST algorithm. Focus was given to Jilin Province, a region of China known to be ecologically vulnerable because of frequent drought. The results showed that 13.52% of the study area, mostly in Jilin Province, is ecologically vulnerable. The vulnerability of trees is the lowest, while that of sparse vegetation is the highest. The response of phenology is such that the relative amount of vegetation biomass and length of the growing period were decreased by negative changes in growth for dense vegetation types. The present research results will be useful for the protection of environments being disturbed by regional ecological restoration.
