5G wireless systems will extend mobile communication services beyond mobile telephony, mobile broadband, and massive machine-type communication into new application domains, namely the so-called vertical domains including the smart factory, smart vehicles, smart grid, smart city, etc. Supporting these vertical domains comes with demanding requirements: high-availability, high-reliability, low-latency, and in some cases, high-accuracy positioning. In this survey, we first identify the potential key performance requirements of 5G communication in support of automation in the vertical domains and highlight the 5G enabling technologies conceived for meeting these requirements. We then discuss the key challenges faced both by industry and academia which have to be addressed in order to support automation in the vertical domains. We also provide a survey of the related research dedicated to automation in the vertical domains. Finally, our vision of 6G wireless systems is discussed briefly.

Next-generation Wireless Solutions for the Smart Factory, Smart Vehicles, the Smart Grid and Smart Cities

OFDM is a multicarrier modulation technique which divides the high rate data stream in to multiple low rate data streams. The low rate data streams are modulated using subcarriers which are orthogonal to each other. The property of orthogonality allows simultaneous transmission of lot of subcarriers in a tight frequency space without interfering with each other, so the spectral efficiency in OFDM is improved. OFDM mitigates Inter Symbol Interference(ISI), since OFDM divides the wide band frequency selective fading channel in to many narrow flat sub channels. So OFDM is one of the dominant technology used in 4G/TD-LTE/LTE-Advanced communication systems. However OFDM can hardly meet the requirement for future 5G networks, since OFDM has high OOB and OFDM can support a only one kind of waveform in the whole Bandwidth. This paper presents a fair comparison of the waveform candidate for 5G. Basic principles and characteristics of 5G waveforms namely filter bank multi carrier (FBMC) universal filtered multicarrier(UFMC),generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) and filtered OFDM (F-OFDM) are discussed.

A Survey:On the Waveforms for 5G

Multicarrier modulation (MCM) schemes have been intensively studied and developed, because of their numerous advantages, which include high data rate and immunity to multipath fading. Among MCM schemes, filter bank multicarrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC-OQAM) has attracted considerable interest in recent years. However, the FBMC-OQAM system exhibits a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). In this paper, we investigate the FBMC-OQAM system and present a solution for the problem of high PAPR that involves two separate components: minimizing the PAPR of each data block and optimizing each segment based on the preceding result. Unlike conventional partial transmit sequence techniques, the new method uses fewer combinations of phase factors, thereby decreasing the complexity of the algorithm while still reducing PAPR. In addition, sparse clipping signals are recovered by compressed sensing, and the bit error rates were analyzed based on sparsity level. The reductions in PAPR were also numerically evaluated using simulations. The simulation results confirm that the proposed technique effectively reduces the high peaks in the FBMC-OQAM system.

PAPR Reduction in the FBMC-OQAM System via Segment-Based Optimization

Abstract5G technology aims to provide higher data rates, low latency, improved system capacity and, increased reliability for its users. The sync shaped spectrum in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) leads to large out of band emissions and reduces spectral efficiency. Filter Bank Multicarrier (FBMC) is one of the new waveforms best-suited candidates for 5G technology. The FBMC is well localized in the time and frequency domain. FBMC filters in a subcarrier basis using a basic pulse shaped prototype filter and it is insensitive to Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO). This paper presents the benefits of FBMC compared to OFDM using MATLAB simulation across the parameters such as Bit Error Rate (BER) and Power Spectral Density (PSD). Performance Analysis of Filter Bank Multicarrier System for 5G Networks

Machine type communication (MTC) is a typical scenario in 5G communication systems, and massive machine type communication (MMTC) is a main type of MTC. One prominent characteristic of MMTC is massive connections and sporadic transmission with short packets. To embrace the new challenge in 5G emerging scenarios, flexible filterbased waveforms have been widely studied recently. In this paper, we evaluate three candidate waveforms, i.e., orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), universal filtered multi-carrier (UFMC) and filtered-OFDM (F-OFDM) in MMTC. We conclude that UFMC and F-OFDM significantly reduce the out of band emission (OOBE) compared to OFDM. On the other hand, OFDM performs better than the other two non-orthogonal waveforms in terms of error performance for both frequency synchronous and asynchronous cases.

Non-orthogonal waveforms for machine type communication

As the next generation cellular system, 5G network is required to provide a large variety of services for different kinds of terminals, from traditional voice and data services over mobile phones to small packet transmission over massive machine-type terminals. Although orthogonal-subcarrier based waveform has been widely used nowadays in many practical systems, it can hardly meet the future requirements in the coming 5G networks. Therefore, more flexible waveforms have been proposed to address the unprecedented challenges. In this article, we will provide comprehensive analysis and comparison for the typical waveform candidates. To obtain insightful analysis, we will not only introduce the basic principles of the waveforms but also reveal the underlying characteristics of each waveform. Moreover, a comprehensive comparison in terms of different performance metrics will be also presented in this article, which provide an overall understanding of the new waveforms.

Waveform Candidates for 5G Networks: Analysis and Comparison

One of 5G communication typical scenarios is machine-to-machine communication with large number of devices, which proposes new requirements for uplink transmission. Filter bank multi-carrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) is one of the popular nonorthogonal waveform candidates for 5G transmission. In this paper, FBMC/OQAM and cyclic prefix OFDM with single antenna settings are comprehensively evaluated and compared in uplink transmission form four aspects: power spectral density, timing and frequency misalignments, guard bands between adjacent users and time efficiency. At last, our comparison results show that FBMC is more suitable for 5G uplink multi-user asynchronous transmissions than CP-OFDM.
