Abstract Controlling electromagnetic waves and information simultaneously by information metasurfaces is of central importance in modern society. Intelligent metasurfaces are smart platforms to manipulate the wave–information–matter interactions without manual intervention by synergizing engineered ultrathin structures with active devices and algorithms, which evolve from the passive composite materials for tailoring wave–matter interactions that cannot be achieved in nature. Here, we review the recent progress of intelligent metasurfaces in wave–information–matter controls by providing the historical background and underlying physical mechanisms. Then we explore the application of intelligent metasurfaces in developing novel wireless communication architectures, with particular emphasis on metasurface-modulated backscatter wireless communications. We also explore the wave-based computing by using the intelligent metasurfaces, focusing on the emerging research direction in intelligent sensing. Finally, we comment on the challenges and highlight the potential routes for the further developments of the intelligent metasurfaces for controls, communications and computing.

Intelligent metasurfaces: control, communication and computing

In the recent years, we observe a dramatic boost of research in photonics empowered by the concepts of machine learning and artificial intelligence. The corresponding photonic systems, to which this new methodology is applied, can range from traditional optical waveguides to nanoantennas and metasurfaces, and these novel approaches underpin the fundamental principles of light-matter interaction developed for a smart design of intelligent photonic devices. Concepts and approaches of artificial intelligence and machine learning penetrate rapidly into the fundamental physics of light, and they provide effective tools for the study of the field of metaphotonics driven by optically-induced electric and magnetic resonances. Here, we introduce this new field with its application to metaphotonics and also present a summary of the basic concepts of machine learning with some specific examples developed and demonstrated for metasystems and metasurfaces.

Intelligent metaphotonics empowered by machine learning

Future wireless communication networks are expected to fulfill the unprecedented performance requirements to support our highly digitized and globally data-driven society. Various technological challenges must be overcome to achieve our goal. Among many potential technologies, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and artificial intelligence (AI) have attracted extensive attention, thereby leading to a proliferation of studies for utilizing them in wireless communication systems. The RIS-based wireless communication frameworks and AI-enabled technologies, two of the promising technologies for the sixth-generation networks, interact and promote with each other, striving to collaboratively create a controllable, intelligent, reconfigurable, and programmable wireless propagation environment. This paper explores the road to implementing the combination of RIS and AI, more specifically, integrating AI-enabled technologies into RIS-based frameworks for maximizing the practicality of RIS to facilitate the realization of smart radio propagation environments, elaborated from shallow to deep insights. We begin with the basic concept and fundamental characteristics of RIS, followed by the overview of the research status of RIS. Then, we analyze the inevitable trend of RIS to be combined with AI. In particular, we focus on recent research about RIS-based architectures embedded with AI, elucidating from the intelligent structures and systems of metamaterials to the AI-embedded RIS-assisted wireless communication systems. Finally, the challenges and potential of the topic are discussed.

Interplay Between RIS and AI in Wireless Communications: Fundamentals, Architectures, Applications, and Open Research Problems

Abstract Electromagnetic (EM) sensing is uniquely positioned among nondestructive examination options, which enables us to see clearly targets, even when they visually invisible, and thus has found many valuable applications in science, engineering and military. However, it is suffering from increasingly critical challenges from energy consumption, cost, efficiency, portability, etc., with the rapidly growing demands for the high-quality sensing with three-dimensional high-frame-rate schemes. To address these difficulties, we propose the concept of intelligent EM metasurface camera by the synergetic exploitation of inexpensive programmable metasurfaces with modern machine learning techniques, and establish a Bayesian inference framework for it. Such EM camera introduces the intelligence over the entire sensing chain of data acquisition and processing, and exhibits good performance in terms of the image quality and efficiency, even when it is deployed in highly noisy environment. Selected experimental results in real-world settings are provided to demonstrate that the developed EM metasurface camera enables us to see clearly human behaviors behind a 60 cm-thickness reinforced concrete wall with the frame rate in order of tens of Hz. We expect that the presented strategy could have considerable impacts on sensing and beyond, and open up a promising route toward smart community and beyond.

Intelligent electromagnetic metasurface camera: system design and experimental results

Large-scale antenna arrays employed by the base station (BS) constitute an essential next-generation communications technique. However, due to the constraints of size, cost, and power consumption, it is usually considered unrealistic to use a large-scale antenna array at the user side. Inspired by the emerging technique of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), we firstly propose the concept of user-specific RIS (US-RIS) for facilitating the employment of a large-scale antenna array at the user side in a cost- and energy-efficient way. In contrast to the existing employments of RIS, which belong to the family of base-station-specific RISs (BSS-RISs), the US-RIS concept by definition facilitates the employment of RIS at the user side for the first time. This is achieved by conceiving a multi-layer structure to realize a compact form-factor. Furthermore, our theoretical results demonstrate that, in contrast to the existing single-layer structure, where only the phase of the signal reflected from RIS can be adjusted, the amplitude of the signal penetrating multi-layer US-RIS can also be partially controlled, which brings about a new degree of freedom (DoF) for beamformer design that can be beneficially exploited for performance enhancement. In addition, based on the proposed multi-layer US-RIS, we formulate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) maximization problem of US-RIS-aided communications. Due to the non-convexity of the problem introduced by this multi-layer structure, we propose a multi-layer transmit beamformer design relying on an iterative algorithm for finding the optimal solution by alternately updating each variable. Finally, our simulation results verify the superiority of the proposed multi-layer US-RIS as a compact realization of a large-scale antenna array at the user side for uplink transmission.

Compact User-Specific Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Uplink Transmission


 Artificial intelligence is facilitating human life in many aspects. Previous artificial intelligence has been mainly focused on computer algorithms (e.g. deep-learning and extreme-learning) and integrated circuits. Recently, all-optical diffractive deep neural networks (D2NN) were realized by using passive structures, which can perform complicated functions designed by computer-based neural networks at the light speed. However, once a passive D2NN architecture is fabricated, its function will be fixed. Here, we propose a programmable artificial intelligence machine (PAIM) that can execute various intellectual tasks by realizing hierarchical connections of brain neurons via a multi-layer digital-coding metasurface array. Integrated with two amplifier chips in each meta-atom, its transmission coefficient covers a dynamic range of 35 dB (from -40 dB to -5 dB), which is the basis to construct the reprogrammable physical layers of D2NN, in which the digital meta-atoms make the artificial neurons alive. We experimentally show that PAIM can handle various deep-learning tasks for wave sensing, including image classifications, mobile communication coder-decoder, and real-time multi-beam focusing. In particular, we propose a reinforcement learning algorithm for on-site learning and discrete optimization algorithm for digital coding, making PAIM have autonomous intelligence ability and perform self-learning tasks without the support of extra computer.
