Particulate matter (PM) pollutants, including nanoscale particles (NPs), have been considered serious threats to public health. In this work, a self-powered air filter that can be used in high-efficiency removal of PM, including NPs, is presented. An ionic liquid–polymer (ILP) composite is irregularly distributed onto a sponge network to form an ILP@MF filter. Enabled by its unique electrochemical properties, the ILP@MF filter can remove PM2.5 and PM10 with high efficiencies of 99.59% and 99.75%, respectively, after applying a low voltage. More importantly, the charged ILP@MF filter realizes a superior removal for NPs with an efficiency of 93.77%. A micro-button lithium cell or silicon-based solar panel is employed as a power supply platform to fabricate a portable and self-powered face mask, which exhibits excellent efficacy in particulate removal compared to commercial masks. This work shows a great promise for high-performance purification devices and facile mask production to remove particulate pollutants. Antibiotic contamination of water bodies is a major environmental concern. Exposure to superfluous antibiotics is an ecological stressor correlated to the development of antibiotic resistance. Thus, it is imperative that effective methods are developed to simultaneously detect and remove such antibiotics so as to avoid inadvertent release. Herein, two flexible three-dimensional (3D) zinc-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {[Zn2(bcob)(OH)(H2O)]·DMA}n (ROD-Zn1) and {[Zn(Hbcob)]·(solvent)}n (ROD-Zn2) (H3bcob = 1,3-bis((4'-carboxylbenzyl)oxy)benzoic acid) with rod second building units (SBUs) are successfully prepared. Their exceptional water and chemical stabilities (toward both acid and base), fast sorption kinetics, and unique framework endow the MOFs with excellent uptake capacity toward various antibiotics in the aqueous environment. The adsorption performance was further optimized by one-pot preparation of MOF-melamine foam (MF) hybrid composites, resulting in a hierarchical microporous-macroporous MOF@MF system (ROD-Zn1@MF and ROD-Zn2@MF), which are readily recyclable after adsorptive capture. The mechanisms of adsorption have been deeply investigated by static and competitive adsorption experiments. In addition, the MOFs exhibit excellent fluorescent properties and quenched by trace amounts of antibiotics in water solution. Therefore, ROD-Zn1 and ROD-Zn2 present a dual-functional performance, being promising candidates for detection and removal of antibiotics.

High-performance multifunctional electrospun fibrous air filter for personal protection: A review

Fine particulate matter (PM) air pollution has increasingly become a global problem; thus, high-performance air filtration materials are in great demand. Herein, we first prepared a biodegradable hierarchically structured nanocellulose-implanted air filter with a high filtration capacity using a freeze-drying technique. In this hierarchically structured air filter, porous structures of corrugated paper and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were used as a frame and functional fillers, respectively. The self-assembled structure of the CNF fillers could be controlled by changing the freezing temperature, CNF sizes, concentrations, and base weights. Only the CNFs with a smaller size and concentration of 0.05 wt % were able to self-assemble to well-dispersed fibril networks. With constant optimization of conditions, when the base weight went up to only 0.25 g/m2, the coverage of the corrugated paper fibers with CNF networks became perfect, and a high efficiency of 94.6% for PM0.3 removal was achieved, while maintaining a relatively low pressure drop of 174.2 Pa. All of the raw materials we used are biodegradable, nonpetroleum-based materials, contributing to sustainable development. We believe that such excellent biodegradable high-performance cellulose-based air filtration materials will provide a new direction for the application of nanocellulose in air filtration.

Designing covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with predetermined structures for uranium capture is vital for energy and the environment, but it remains challenging for complex COFs, which are expected to produce various structures, due to lacking quantum-mechanics-based design principles. Here, we report the COFs’ design principles based on intramolecular interactions to precisely control their structures and properties, toward high-performance uranium sorbents. We investigate the structure-directing effect of intramolecular interactions in hydroxyl-group-functionalized COFs by experiments and density functional theory (DFT) studies. The atomic arrangements of COFs are determined by the competition among conjugation, aromaticity, hydrogen bonding, and steric effect. Controlling the number of hydroxyl groups can adjust their correlation and competition. Subsequently, optimal uranium adsorption performance of hydroxyl-group-functionalized COFs is achieved through structural optimization. This study demonstrates that modulating intramolecular interactions is a viable approach to precisely controlling the structure and properties of complex COFs for special applications. 

Design principles based on intramolecular interactions for hydroxyl-functionalized covalent organic frameworks

Interfacial water remains liquid and mobile much below 0 °C, imparting flexibility to the encapsulated materials to ensure their diverse functions at subzero temperatures. However, a united picture that can describe the dynamical differences of interfacial water on different materials and its role in imparting system-specific flexibility to distinct materials is lacking. By combining neutron spectroscopy and isotope labeling, we explored the dynamics of water and the underlying substrates independently below 0 °C across a broad range of materials. Surprisingly, while the function-related anharmonic dynamical onset in the materials exhibits diverse activation temperatures, the surface water presents a universal onset at a common temperature. Further analysis of the neutron experiment and simulation results revealed that the universal onset of water results from an intrinsic surface-independent relaxation: switching of hydrogen bonds between neighboring water molecules with a common energy barrier of ∼35 kJ mol−1.
