Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to illustrate application of the cleaner production concept so as to incorporate environmental protection into business performance. The study analyses areas pertaining to the foundry industry that impact negatively on the environment leading to unsustainable resource utilisation and suggests options for promoting sustainable development within the industry, with specific focus on a foundry in a lower income country (LIC).Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected using the cleaner production (CP) Methodology. Pre‐assessment and assessment was carried out and options generated. The options included both low cost and capital intensive approaches.Findings – The paper finds that the CP approach adopted provides clear guidance for generating options and can be used as a practical basis for managerial decision making and policy formulation. Cleaner production for environmental conscious manufacturing in the foundry industry

This paper describes 13 case studies illustrating initiatives to embed sustainable development in the Australian minerals industry spanning a decade and a half from 1990. For each case study, a brief background to the mining site or mineral processing operation is given, a description of the existing processes prior to implementing the initiatives, a description of the initiatives, and the drivers, barriers and conclusions drawn from each set of initiatives. Analyse und Verbesserung der Arbeitsabläufe in Betrieben der Reparaturlackierung

This paper provides an empirical approximation to the profile of eco-innovative Spanish companies and highlights some specificities in construction and manufacturing companies. The research is based on a probit model of 4518 firms from the Spanish Innovation Survey for the 2014-2016 period. Spanish companies that claimed to have at least one eco-innovation objective were mainly medium-sized and belonged to the manufacturing sector. Eco-innovation drivers in manufacturing and construction were similar and included expenditure on R&amp;D, expenditure on machinery, and collaboration with stakeholders. The major obstacle for manufacturing companies was market uncertainty, while high investment costs, insufficient funds, and difficulty in accessing financing constituted the most significant barriers for construction companies. The results point to the importance of reinforcing public financing, technological capabilities, and collaboration channels between companies to encourage eco-innovation. The results also show that efforts towards a circular economy currently seem limited.JEL Codes: Q01, Q55, Q56, O31 

Determinants of Eco-innovation in the Change towards a Circular Economy: An Empirical Analysis of Spanish Firms

This chapter describes case studies of community engagement and eco-efficiency across the Australian mining and minerals industry. Eco-efficiency includes new processes, systems, and initiatives for improving air quality, energy, and materials efficiency, waste minimisation, improved waste water management, and increased water use efficiencies across several sectors of the mining and minerals processing industry. Specific findings were as follows: (1) environmental and social improvements at operations and within communities in which they operate can realise economic benefits and will not always incur a major financial cost; (2) local communities provide the means by which a mining or minerals processing operation can realise its full potential in contributing to a region’s economic and social well-being; (3) improvements to waste management practises and waste prevention can lead to cost reductions or even increased revenues; (4) water efficiency improvements will be needed by any mining company planning to remain viable in the future, particularly in Australia; (5) at the operations level, there needs to be clear commitment from senior management to make the case for change to a more sustainable mining or minerals processing operation; and (6) mining companies need to work closely with businesses and suppliers to identify new processes that enhance the sustainability of their businesses.

Applications of Stakeholder Engagement and Eco-Efficiency as Enablers of Corporate Responsibility in the Australian Mining and Minerals Processing Industry

The paper reviews some innovative pilot projects for promoting environmental management among small‐ and medium‐size companies. These projects leave much room for optimism insofar as they suggest that ‘cleaner production’ is both ecologically and economically efficient. Significantly they also show that much can be gained through organizational changes.

Environment and innovation: Introducing cleaner production

Properly implemented environmental protection can prove to be an economically sound and profitable approach for processing and manufacturing industry. This requires an integrated approach with a systematic consideration, and consequent reduction, of the formation of waste products and emissions. This paper proposes a system for categorisation of the starting materials of production and for classification of waste and emission flows, and an answering strategy based thereon. Avoidance and reduction of emissions can be achieved in four ways: increasing efficiency, increasing effectiveness, utilisation of by-products, and substitution of starting materials. Combination of material-flow analysis with a complete plant environmental cost calculation helps to clarify the economic benefits of production-integrated environmental protection. More than 100 case studies conducted within the framework of cleaner production programs in Austria demonstrated the soundness and feasibility of thes approach.

The ability to create, distribute and exploit knowledge has become a major source of competitive advantage, wealth creation and improvement in the quality life. Some of the main features of this transformation are the growing impacts of information and communication technologies (ICT) on the economy and on society; the rapid application of recent scientific advances in new products and processes; as high rate of innovation across countries ; a shift to more knowledge-intensive industries and services; and rising skill requirements. These changes imply that science; technology and innovation are the key of improving economic performance and social being. During these three past years, Hassan 2nd University of Casablanca has been a part of UNCHAIN (UNiversity CHAir on INnovation) network. Therefore and in accordance with The EU higher education policy towards the MEDA countries, Hassan 2 nd University of Casablanca focused in: -Strengthening the role of higher education institutions in society at large; -Addressing the “knowledge triangle” of education, research and innovation at university level; -Invigorating links between higher education institutions and the labor market, including the promotion of entrepreneurship and the creation or support of business start-ups. The project aims to build innovation capacity at universities and industries while supporting university-industry collaborations, and further fosters knowledge and technology transfer. This EU-Tempus program supported especially by UNIDO (Vien) developed strategy aimed to : -Help enterprises translating their needs to R&D subjects in the field of industrial innovation. -Encourage and support the enterprises to pursue innovation in collaboration with the university thereby availing themselves of existing facilities and expertise. -Promote university departments to carry out commercially relevant innovation projects with industrial enterprises. -Disseminate new and useful knowledge resulting from University research, license technology to industry in order to promote the development of inventions towards practical applications, -Employ a range of activities such as training of faculty, staff consultancy, seminars and specialist training courses, facilitating R&D activities such as innovative products, processes and systems. -Form different cooperation models with the industry such as closer and longer-term strategic alliances for mutual benefit. It presents a general framework encompassing the factors that can make universityindustry collaborations more successful. UNCHAIN-UH2C also developed partnership with Ministry of Commerce, Industry and New technologies in order to take advantage of funding programs implemented under the National Innovation Strategy. One way which permits to researchers to conduct applied research and R&D projects that can be realized within the framework conditions of quality, time, organization and communication.
