The role of sustainability in urban design is becoming increasingly important as Australia’s cities continue to grow, putting pressure on existing infrastructure such as water, energy and transport. To optimise an urban design many different aspects such as water, energy, transport, costs need to be taken into account integrally. Integrated software applications assessing urban designs on a large variety of aspects are hardly available. With the upcoming next generation of the Internet often referred to as the Semantic Web, data can become more machine-interpretable by developing ontologies that can support the development of integrated software systems. Software systems can use these ontologies to perform an intelligent task such as assessing an urban design on a particular aspect. When ontologies of different applications are aligned, they can share information resulting in interoperability. Inference such as compliancy checks and classifications can support aligning the ontologies. A proof of concept implementation has been made to demonstrate and validate the usefulness of machine interpretable ontologies for urban designs.

Towards integrated assessments for urban development

This paper presents an integrated collaborative approach for facilities management (FM), which utilises the Sydney Opera House (SOH) as an exemplar case study. The approach deals with Benchmarking, Procurement and Digital Modelling as a whole and develops collaboration between them. It aims to achieve innovative FM strategies and models that will possibly have a direct benefit role for the Australian facilities management industry. The Benchmarking theme focuses on the asset maintenance of the performing art centre, iconic building and facilities with similar functionalities. Critical success factors in the functional areas of asset maintenance are identified against organisational objectives of the SOH and key performance indicators are developed. The Procurement theme focuses on the maintenance service procurement, especially for outsourcing. Procurement methods and a multi-criteria assessment approach for supporting decision making are discussed. Suggested collaboration between Benchmarking and Procurement includes sharing of the benchmarking data and utility of key performance indicators to support procurement strategies. The Digital Modelling theme develops building information modelling for facilities management and investigates the potential of state-of-the-art information systems to enable a future integrated platform to support facility management collaborative activities and processes.

Demand support systems (DSSs) can help clients by presenting design solutions using virtual reality, and by offering relevant feedback such as costs, energy usage, distances and density. Using these systems, clients and stakeholders can run 'what-if' scenarios on different design solutions and see the consequences of their changes. To make sure that a DSS is suitable, it needs to cope with the project situation at hand. This paper investigates DSSs that can be built 'on-site' and that are flexible enough to model project-specific issues. A custom-built DSS can be tailored for each project. Therefore this paper explores the use of ontologies. The use of an ontology enables further reuse of software components and software models. With this approach, several parts of software components can be reused and put together to quickly develop a customised DSS. This paper describes this approach and demonstrates a prototype implementation that is useful for urban design projects in early design phases.
