The central question of this study is: ‘How can we understand the Samoan church as an indigenous church of the twenty-first century?’
In the eyes of the adherents of the Ekalesia Fa’apotopotoga Kerisiano Samoa (EFKS) – also known as the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa (CCCS) – the Samoan life-world as it is now has been vigorously shaped and reshaped by the assimilation and integration of Samoan culture and Christianity since the arrival of the latter in 1830. The whole Samoan existential system, the fa’asamoa, which encompasses moral, ethical, cultural, political, economic and social factors, and indeed the spiritual values of Samoan society, has been conditioned by the interface between the two institutions – the EFKS, and Samoan culture. Reciprocally, the Christian faith and practice of the EFKS has been reshaped by the Samoan cultural context. The concrete actions and activities that constitute good Samoan life are what the term praxis denotes in this study. The sum total of actions and activities that derive out of the fine synthesis between Samoan culture and Christianity is described here as the ‘cultural–theological praxis’. This study is an attempt to interpret and understand the dynamics of the integration, interaction, and inter-relationship processes existing between Christianity and Samoan culture within the Samoan context. Thus, the overarching aim of this study is to critically analyse the cultural theological praxis of the EFKS setting; and to explore and establish a philosophical hermeneutic to both appraise and understand such praxis of the indigenous Samoan church context of the twenty-first century. I have developed this contextual philosophical hermeneutical approach from the indigenous notion of ‘O le Tofa Liliu a Samoa’ – ‘objective self-reflective wisdom of Samoa’. 
From the critical evaluation and analysis of the EFKS some suggestions are made as to further significant elements of possible contextualisation from the fa’asamoa, through which the EFKS may be made more relevant and participatory for its contemporary adherents, especially the younger generation. The hermeneutical approach O le Tofa Liliu a Samoa could establish a solid foundation for a more extensive review of the EFKS.

The purpose of the thesis is to illuminate the meaning of quality nursing care in the three major inpatient cancer care centres in Cyprus as seen from the standpoint of patients with cancer, patients' advocates and nurses. The data are based on: a) interviews (narratives) with 25 patients with cancer and two focus groups b) a focus group with patients' advocates and c) interviews with 20 nurses working in the cancer care departments.

The rational for this study echoed a conceptualisation problem among patients, nurses and patients' advocates in relation to quality nursing care. The different interpretations held by the informants around this issue often creates problems of communication and understanding between nurse-patients and between nurses-patients' advocates. It also prevents a commonly shared concept to be adopted in the clinical setting. 

In order to investigate this issue, a philosophical approach was adopted based on the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur and using the "lived experiences" of the informants as the basis of the investigation. The data were analysed using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach based on Ricoeur's interpretation theory but modified to suit the nursing paradigm. 

What stands out from the study is the overlapping of the patients', patients' advocates and the nurses' experiences of quality nursing care. Based on the attributes that the 
informants have used to interpret the concept of quality nursing care, a shared understanding of the concept materialised. This shared understanding formed the basis 
for developing a theory of quality nursing care. Simultaneously, the study reinforced the importance of "getting the basics right" for providing quality nursing care to patients with cancer. Based on the informants' lived experiences a set of guidelines of best practice were developed, as a means for influencing nursing practice.

PSYCHOLOGY’S STRUGGLE TO LOCATE A MORAL VISION IN A VALUE-NEUTRAL FRAMEWORK: A HERMENEUTIC PERSPECTIVE ON STANDARD 3.05 OF THE APA ETHICS CODE Tammera M. Cooke Antioch University Seattle Seattle, WA This research followed hermeneutic tradition by examining what is often unquestioned in clinical practice as it pertains to the moral, political, and philosophical foundations that underlie the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (2002, 2010) and Standard 3.05, Multiple Relationships—it’s meanings and controversies. It did so in order to better understand the cultural influences reflected in and the political consequences that emanate from the Ethics Code. Data for this study were collected via semi-structured qualitative interviews with two American psychologists who lived in Washington State, experienced living and working in rural communities, and had practiced with patients from cultures other than their own. This process generated ideas about the larger picture of the social landscape in which the participants and psychotherapy in general are embedded. The interpretive method of analysis proposed by hermeneutic researchers Leonard (1993), Plager (1994), and Stigliano (1989), was used to identify key themes that arose from the data. Three over-arching themes were derived: Participants’ confused, anxious, and fearful reactions to Standard 3.05; Problems with the Ethics Code; and Defenses the Participants’ enacted to protect against their conflicts and fears.
