PAN is a process based Prolog system running in a distributed manner on the nodes of a virtual multiprocessor. It was designed to be a general purpose parallel logic programming system that would be resilient to software and hardware evolution. Programs can explicitly control parallelism through passing general terms synchronously or asynchronously among PAN’s Prolog engines. Alternatively several forms of parallelism can be implicitly extracted by compilation techniques and runtime scheduling on top of this architecture. The computational platform or Parallel Virtual Machine is a meshed set of daemons on a network of heterogeneous workstations offering common message passing, configuration and job control services. PAN is presented to users under X Window as a multi-headed extension of single processor Prolog systems. An interface to each Prolog engine is displayed in a separate X widget together with a console window to the PVM, and window based methods are supported for simultaneously invoking all engines together.

A software architecture has been developed that couples a concurrent logic programming or CLP engine with a multi-threaded Prolog engine Concurrency among mutually invoking Prolog and CLP computations is sustained partly through and-parallel execution of CLP computations on the CLP engine, partly by executing multiple Prolog processes and a CLP engine under Unix on a multi-processor or a uni-processor Communication among the multiple computations is realised by message passing, enabling the architecture to be multi-processed with a low degree of contention for shared memory The coupled architecture supports multi-user knowledge based systems without compromising on the expressive power and performance of Prolog and CLP languages, and without diminishing the capacity for multi-processing at a task apposite grain of parallelism

Sequential and parallel Prolog's ability to implement don't know non-determinism in resolution efficiently makes them apt for supporting a knowledge base querying capability. On the other hand, their search based execution model their trial use of bindings makes them unsuitable for systems programming. Conversely, the use of concurrent logic programming or CLP languages of committed bindings, general and-parallelism, and synchronisation constraints enables them to support systems programming applications quite well. However, their use of committed choice resolution makes them unable to support a knowledge base querying capability. These limitations of the main logic programming schemes make it awkward to program concurrent knowledge based systems in logic. That would require the means for sustaining both knowledge base querying and systems management capabilities within a single logic programming scheme. However, the querying parts could be realised with trial binding computations on a multi-threaded Prolog engine and the systems programming parts with committed binding computations on a CLP engine by loosely coupling these engines together. This paper proposes suitable interfaces and methods for realising these forms of coupling. A multi-user Prolog system, a coupled meta-interpreter and multiple solutions predicates illustrate coupled resolution engine programming.
