Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX) nano-materials are considered to be the most encouraging candidates to deal with environmental remediation, energy conversion, and degradation of organic pollutants because of their attractive characteristics, such as appropriate band structure, suppressed charges recombination ability, and good catalytic activity. The pure BiOX does not justify the advisable fine-tune photocatalytic efficiency. Therefore, several BiOX morphologies are synthesized, such as atomic layers, ultrathin nano-sheets, nano-spheres, and nano-tubes to enhance multiple applications performance. Moreover, the photocatalytic sites, quantum efficiency, charge separation, and light absorption efficiency of BiOX are largely studied for higher photocatalytic activity. Generally, we reviewed the highly advanced strategies for enhanced photocatalytic activities including simultaneous decontamination of wastewater as well as energy conversion. Furthermore, the review objective; is to summarize recent scientific and technological challenging about bismuth oxyhalides composites including fabrication methods, photocatalytic activity, and performance improving challenging of BiOX based photocatalysts. Moreover, we proposed comprehensive upcoming positive advances and developments comprising potential applications on behalf of BiOX based photocatalysts. 

Recent advances in BiOX-based photocatalysts to enhanced efficiency for energy and environment applications

Abstract Nanoparticles play irreplaceable roles in optoelectronic sensing, medical therapy, material science, and chemistry due to their unique properties. There are many synthetic pathways used for the preparation of nanoparticles, and different synthetic pathways can produce nanoparticles with different properties. Therefore, it is crucial to control the properties of nanoparticles precisely to impart the desired functions. In general, the properties of nanoparticles are influenced by their sizes and morphologies. Current technology for the preparation of nanoparticles on microfluidic chips requires repeated experimental debugging and significant resources to synthesize nanoparticles with precisely the desired properties. Machine learning-assisted synthesis of nanoparticles is a sensible choice for addressing this challenge. In this paper, we review many recent studies on syntheses of nanoparticles assisted by machine learning. Moreover, we describe the working steps of machine learning, the main algorithms, and the main ways to obtain datasets. Finally, we discuss the current problems of this research and provide an outlook.

Intelligent control of nanoparticle synthesis on microfluidic chips with machine learning

Abstract Microfluidics is used to manipulate fluid flow in micro-channels to fabricate drug delivery vesicles in a uniform tunable size. Thanks to their designs, microfluidic technology provides an alternative and versatile platform over traditional formulation methods of nanoparticles. Understanding the factors that affect the formulation of nanoparticles can guide the proper selection of microfluidic design and the operating parameters aiming at producing nanoparticles with reproducible properties. This review introduces the microfluidic systems’ continuous flow (single-phase) and segmented flow (multiphase) and their different mixing parameters and mechanisms. Furthermore, microfluidic approaches for efficient production of nanoparticles as surface modification, anti-fouling, and post-microfluidic treatment are summarized. The review sheds light on the used microfluidic systems and operation parameters applied to prepare and fine-tune nanoparticles like lipid, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-based nanoparticles as well as cross-linked nanoparticles. The approaches for scale-up production using microfluidics for clinical or industrial use are also highlighted. Furthermore, the use of microfluidics in preparing novel micro/nanofluidic drug delivery systems is presented. In conclusion, the characteristic vital features of microfluidics offer the ability to develop precise and efficient drug delivery nanoparticles.

Merits and advances of microfluidics in the pharmaceutical field: design technologies and future prospects

Gallic acid (GA) is a synthetic polyphenolic compound that has been increasing interest due to its diverse biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, scavenging free radicals, protecting cardiovascular diseases, and hypertension-lowering properties. The precise and rapid determination of GA content holds significant importance for human health. In this study, we present a cost-effective and highly sensitive electrochemical sensor employing a nanocomposite material, diester calix[4]arene functionalized graphene oxide (DEC4/GO) for the ultrasensitive detection of GA. The characterization of the as-synthesized nanocomposite material was carried out using various techniques, such as Fourier-Transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Tunneling Electron Microscopy (TEM), to ascertain its chemical composition, crystalline nature, phase purity, and structural morphology. The uniform deposition of DEC4/GO on the surface of a bare glass carbon electrode (GCE) was achieved via a drop casting method. In addition, the developed sensor DEC4/GO/GCE exhibits exceptional electrochemical response towards GA under optimized conditions, such as pH -7 phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) as a supporting electrolyte, a scan rate of 110 mV/s, and an applied potential window between −0.2 V and 0.8 V. The as-developed sensor demonstrated a wide linear dynamic range of 10–100 μM, resulting a brilliant linear calibration obtained for GA. Furthermore, the limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of the developed sensor were calculated as 0.01 and 0.03 μM respectively, lower than those reported for the other GA sensors. To validate the feasibility of our developed method, we analyzed the GA content in wine and green tea samples, achieving good recovery results. Overall, this study presents a promising electrochemical sensor platform for ultrasensitive detection of GA holding potential implications for various applications in health monitoring and food analysis. 

Modified electrochemical sensor via supramolecular structural functionalized graphene oxide for ultra-sensitive detection of gallic acid

Water pollution caused by the release of organic pollutants is a major environmental concern worldwide. These pollutants can have harmful effects on aquatic ecosystems and the organisms living within them, as well as on human health when contaminated water is consumed. It is essential to implement proper treatment and management strategies to prevent and mitigate water pollution. Moreover, the major untreated industrial effluents are synthetic organic compounds especially 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) which cause several environmental issues and heath related problems in humans. To cope with this problem, an excellent 2D porous material based on p-DMAC4/GO composite has been synthesized as adsorbent material for the effective removal of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol pollutant from wastewater. In this regard, the advanced analytical tools such as Fourier-Transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used for its characterization. The results justified the chemical composition, excellent crystalline nature, surface morphology and elemental composition of the synthesized composite material. The synthesized adsorbent material showed 95% adsorption of TCP from wastewater system at optimal conditions i.e., pH (6), adsorbent dosage (30 mg) and shaking time (60 min). The mathematical models such as isotherms, thermodynamics and kinetics studies validate the nature of adsorption process of TCP pollutant. The adsorption data found to be best fitted with Langmuir isotherms (R2 = 0.99); whereas kinetic study suggested the pseudo-second-order nature of reaction with R2 = 0.99. The thermodynamics study confirmed the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the TCP pollutant onto the surface of p-DMAC4/GO material. Moreover, the results of current work were also compared with existing reported adsorbents and data suggested the higher efficiency, feasibility, and reusability of p-DMAC4/GO material to remove the TCP pollutant from the wastewater system. 

Fabrication of para-dimethylamine calix[4]arene functionalized self-assembled graphene oxide composite material for effective removal of 2, 4, 6-tri-Cholorphenol from aqueous environment

In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of novel nanocomposite namely doubly functionalized chloromethyl-calix[4]arene-methoxy grafted silylated clay (SC-C[4]). The silylation of nanoclay (thickness of the sheets ≈ 1 nm) was performed using (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) (height ≈ 4.55 A) coupling agent. The resulting organoclay was characterized by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and 29Si and 13C solid-state NMR. The XRD results suggested the presence of a double layer of silanes molecules into the clay galleries of nanoclay minerals by increasing in the basal spacing. While the IR, 29Si and 13C solid-state NMR, and TGA analysis demonstrated the successful silylation of clay by the appearance of novel absorption bands, the changes in the chemical environment and the peaks degradation in the range 200 to 500  ° C related to aminosilane molecules, respectively. The calix[4]arenes derivatives were synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy and 1HNMR. The results showed that calix[4]arene was functionalized at the lower and upper rim. The grafting of the doubly functionalized calix[4]arene onto clay surfaces was performed through nucleophilic reaction. Structure, thermal properties of the nanocomposite SC-C[4] were also investigated. All data approved the successful grafting of para-chloromethyl-calix[4]arene-OMe onto clay surfaces.

The calix[4]arene diester was prepared and characterized. Purified clay was firstly silylated with APTES silane before grafting the glutaraldehyde. Then, tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, ethylenediamine or hexamethylenediamine were grafted. The structures of the silylated and modified clays were characterized by various techniques. The calix[4]arene diester was grafted onto modified clays. All data demonstrated the successful grafting of calix[4]arene, and indicated that in the case of the nanocomposites with aliphatic amines, the calixarene was grafted by a single ester function, whereas by two ester functions in the case of the nanocomposite with branched amine. 

Synthesis and characterization of calix[4]arene diester-grafted-functionalized clay nanocomposites

In this investigation, the nanocomposite (SC-C[6]) is prepared and characterized. The adsorption of chromium ions onto SC-C[6] as a function of pH solution, contact time, initial Cr(VI) concentration and effect of temperature is studied through batch experiments. The removal towards Cr(VI) increased with decreasing of pH solution, from 7.5 to 1.5, while it decreased with increasing of initial Cr(VI) concentration and temperature. The maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity for SC-C[6] reached at pH 1.5, 10.4mgL−1, 25 °C and 1 h, and the mechanisms may include electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between the nanocomposite and Cr(VI) anions.
