Weighting and selection of criteria for the sustainable performance assessment of building envelope are onerous process for building designers, since the process needs to be carefully undertaken in order to adequately assess the sustainable performance of the building envelope. However, the process of selecting performance criteria and weighting the importance of these criteria for the assessment of the building envelope sustainable performance is both challenging and technically complex. A lot of multi-criteria aggregating methods have been developed, many of which require appropriate criteria and weights to evaluate sustainable performance. Some of these methods lack quantitative weighting mechanism while some lack subjective weighting mechanism. Since the weight plays a major role in ranking, assessing and selection of the sustainable envelope design, this paper presents an Integrated Criteria Weighting Framework incorporated into an Integrated Performance Model (IPM) for determining integrated weight for criteria involve in assessing the sustainable performance and selecting a sustainable envelope design. On the basis of the numerical findings, this study concludes that the proposed framework can successfully address the problem of criteria weighting and assessing the building envelope sustainable performance towards achieving building sustainability.

An Integrated Criteria Weighting Framework for the sustainable performance assessment and design of building envelope

Widespread environmental awareness towards achieving product sustainability has spurred great efforts in using more environmental-friendly materials in product design. Among the most promising solutions to address the needs is by using natural fibers to reduce the dependence on synthetic fibers as reinforcement and filler materials for polymer composites’ construction. Many efforts have been made to fully quantify the advantages of natural fiber composites (NFC) for diverse applications such as automotive, building materials, and household appliances. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is among the efforts being undertaken related to NFC with the primary aim to determine the overall potential environmental impact of using such materials on the surroundings. Among the major advantages of performing LCA is its capability to provide a more holistic overview of the environmental impact whereby it covers the whole product life cycles from raw material extraction to end-of-life stages, hence enabling justified decisions on the suitability of using NFC for specific applications to be made scientifically. In this chapter, an overview of the LCA method is explained and subsequently followed by description of its applications involving NFC in different applications. The advantages and limitations of the LCA method related to the NFCs are also discussed as well as a final conclusion on the future directions of LCA application for NFC.

The thermal expansion behaviour of silicon carbide (SCS-2) fibre reinforced 6061 aluminium matrix composite subjected to the influenced thermal mechanical cycling (TMC) process were investigated. The thermal stress has important effect on the longitudinal thermal expansion coefficient of the composites. The present paper used experimental data of the thermal expansion behaviour of a SiC/Al composite for temperatures up to 370°C, in which their data was used for carrying out modelling of theoretical predictions.

This paper presents the design of analytical hierarchy process for teaching and learning in Institutional of Higher Learning (IHL). Determining the appropriate teaching and learning tool is an essential decision in education system. There are many teaching and learning tools have been developed to assist lecturers for teaching and delivering materials in the class. The appropriate use of tools is important that allows interaction between lecturers and students. Therefore, the appropriate tool in teaching and learning must be determined and the method than can be employed is analytical hierarchy process (AHP). In order to illustrate the application of AHP, there are 5 main factors and 15 sub-factors that determine the decision of tools. In this study, there were 4 decision options were considered namely u-learn system, BlogSpot, Facebook and email. The results showed that U-learn approach is the most appropriate tool as it has the highest value (36.4%) among the other tools. Thus, this paper presents the design of analytical hierarchy process as a methodology for selecting the appropriate teaching and learning tools.
