Recent Advances on IoT-Assisted Wearable Sensor Systems for Healthcare Monitoring

The aim of this review is to provide a broad overview of the state-of-the-art works mainly published in the last ten years on expert systems applied in different medical domains. Being able to support and sometimes substitute experts, an expert system may be a precious ally for medical diagnoses. Medical expert system applications provide physicians and patients with an immediate access to knowledge and advice, rooting their flexibility into their knowledge bases, rule sets and graphical interfaces. To be trusted by their users, medical expert systems should follow some criteria, which we investigate along with their different realization, from fuzzy logic to wearable solutions for out-of-clinical-environment care. We also consider the advantages of approaching diagnoses and alert systems through an artificial intelligence counterpart, without forgetting the importance of a good validation to assess the system functionality. Therefore, we show the heterogeneity of the solutions proposed by the literature, bounded to the specific needs a medical expert system is called to answer, the common lack of a system validation and the possible benefits deriving from these systems application.

Expert systems: Definitions, advantages and issues in medical field applications

This paper presents a conceptual architecture, design, and recommendation for the IoT Edge-based healthcare management system. The suggested architecture aims at distributing the workload of system performance (electronic healthcare services), including monitoring, diagnosis, prediction, as well as managing and archiving medical data of patients across different points of the system (at the edge and on the cloud). The proposed system design consists of two main subsystems (one for monitoring tasks and another one for medical record management activities). Both subsystems interact with multiple kinds of database systems (SQL and NoSQL). Transformational-based system for data migration is presented as a contribution of this paper. Two styles of transformation compositions are considered in the architectural design of transformation agents.

Edge-Based IoT Medical Record System: Requirements, Recommendations and Conceptual Design

This research adapted and implemented an algorithm for commanding using speech recognition in ARABIC language in addition to English, and the ability to train the system using other languages. The recognition based on discrete coefficient of the wavelet transform. Intelligent recognizer is built for two models, the first is Neural Networks, and the second is Fuzzy Logic Recognizer. The proposed speech recognition system consists of three phases; preprocessing phase (two processes are performed on the sound, DC level removal and resizing of sample for 2000 samples for each sound), feature extraction phase (features that distinguish each sound from another, it is wavelet transform coefficients), and recognition phase (many classifiers could be used for speaker recognition, in this research supervised neural networks, MLP and Fuzzy Logic classifiers are used. This research is also concerned with studying the recognition ability of MLP neural Network and Suggeno type Fuzzy Logic systems, for the recognition of Arabic and English Languages. The neural networks trained with features extracted from discrete wavelet transform. The use of Wavelet Transformation enables to extract an exact features form the speech. The research illustrates the effect of using two different intelligent approaches using MATLAB, and by applying the voice commands directly to an automated wheeled vehicle.

Arabic Voice Recognition Using Fuzzy Logic and Neural Network

A smart city is a community that uses communication and information technology to improve sustainability, livability, and feasibility. As any community, there are always unexpected emergencies, which must be treated to preserve the regular order. However, a smart system is needed to be able to respond effectively to these emergent situations. The contribution made in this survey is twofold. Firstly, it provides a comprehensive exhaustive and categorized overview of the existing surveys for smart cities.  The categorization is based on several criteria such as structures, benefits, advantages, applications, challenges, issues, and future directions. Secondly, it aims to analyze several studies with respect to emergent situations and management to smart cities. The analysis is based on several factors such as the challenges and issues discussed, the solutions proposed, and opportunities for future research. The challenges include security, privacy, reliability, performance, scalability, heterogeneity, scheduling, resource management, and latency. Few studies have investigated the emergent situations of smart cities and despite the importance of latency factor for smart city applications, it is rarely discussed.

Elderly chronic diseases are the main cause of death in the world, accounting 60% of all death. Because elderly with chronic diseases at the early stages has no observed symptoms, and then symptoms starts to appear, it is critical to observe the symptoms as early as possible to avoid any complication. This paper presents an expert system for an Elderly Health Care (EHC) at elderly home tailored for the specific needs of Elderly. The proposed EHC aims to develop an integrated and multidisciplinary method to employ communication technologies and information for covering real health needs of elderly people, mainly of people at high risk due to social and geographic isolation in addition to specific chronic diseases. The proposed EHC provides personalized intervention plans covering chronic diseases such as (body temperature (BT), blood pressure (BP), and Heart beat rate (HR)). The processes and architecture of the proposed EHC are based on the server side and three main clients, one for the elderly and another two for the nurse and the physician’s whom take care of them. The proposed EHC model is discussed for proving the usefulness and effectiveness of the expert system.
